Sergej Milinkovic Savic

this is a good, short clip that highlights his quality. You can say what you want about YouTube but I always think that’s pretty cynical because you should be able to tell from clips a players natural ability level. There’s shit he does here that proves he’s quality because they are things average players just can’t do (at the top level).

his range and weight of pass is a give away, as is his control and even his ability to know when to tackle. He’s an intelligent player and so much better than anyone we have other than Pogba.

It's like a Pogba highlight video only Pogba's a 5x as long just for one season.

Looking quickly at his stats, he's pretty much inferior to Pogba in every department but gives the ball away a fair bit less through bad touches and dispossession. Is anyone going to do a proper stat comparison?

This potential transfer sums up the transfer muppets. Would have salivating at the prospect of getting this guy this time last year. Now nobody seems too keen.

Bruno Fernandes is basically this year's SMS. I'd say only a handful of fans have actually watched Sporting Lisbon on here yet we have tons claiming he's the next best thing.

Muppet going to Muppet though.

Thanks for posting this I’ve only ever seen bits of him at last World Cup. Looks incredible on this. As you say, I know it’s a compilation of highlights but looks incredible on this. Two footed, technically excellent, great passer, gets stuck in , tall, tough. Be fantastic if we get him and keep pogba

SMS had a crap last season

What are you basing that on? The fact he got less goals and assists than previous years? He played a much deeper role and was awarded Serie A's Midfielder of the Year award. Doesn't sound like a crap season to me.

Don't believe the links one second. This is just wasted time imo.

Completely. All these Agents are pushing the line that United are interested to get the moves they want. What doesn't help is the ineptitude and appalling record of Woodward in the transfer market that is fuelling this. Sooner we get a DOF the better.

Savic and Pogba are way too similar. If Savic was brought in, it would be to replace Pogba and not compliment him as both are not that disciplined when it comes to defending and neither of the two are No. 10 either. Savic and Pogba cannot play in a double pivot either. Partey would function the best in a double pivot with Pogba with Bruno ahead of the two. Bruno has exceptional work rate when it comes to driving up and down the pitch. I wouldn't have any issues with his defending.

Savic is a natural no.10, which is why I would say although there are similarities I would stop short of calling them too similar and dismissing the prospect of them lining up together. With the right player in the holding role (such as Partey, using your example), Pogba could play in the double pivot with Milinkovic-Savic ahead of them.

Only really got in to watching Italian Football this season and I have been impressed in a season where he was apparently not his best. The season before, numbers wise, was much better so I take that as a huge positive!

Lazio in general weren’t that great last year so to stand out still is pretty impressive IMO. He was voted Midfielder of the Year

The season before he played in an inside left attacking midfield position in a 3-4-2-1. He positioned himself high and excelled playing with his back to goal. When Lazio lost possession he dropped into the deeper midfield line, into the left of a midfield three position in a 3-5-1-1 formation.

So similar to Fellaini in his positioning and reaction to gaining or losing the ball - think of the way in which Fellaini would play deliberately to the left hand side under Van Gaal, and how the defenders and even De Gea would use him as an outlet to progress up the pitch and bring Blind and Young into the game in more advanced areas. Or the massive difference between where Fellaini looked to operate in and out of possession under Mourinho, defending in such a deep shape and then acting as a target man. Milinkovic-Savic is much more technical and imaginative though.

How does that compare with how he was used last season? By all accounts he was employed deeper, which would explain the dip in his numbers and, I would imagine, the dip in form as he looked very natural operating in higher areas.

He was not voted Midfielder of the Year though - the award is given out based on statistics.

If he joins as some kind replacement for Pogba, at very first opportunity he will get so much hate here, it will be crazy.

SMS would be a beast in the EPL. Power and ability, there's nothing not to like about his game. Unless we believe Fred is on the cusp of greatness we definitely need what SMS would bring, regardless of Pogba.

Seems bizarre to be after a player more suited to Mourinho's style than Ole's. How much input has Ole had into this move if it's genuinely being made? Is SMS going to excel in the hard running, hard pressing midfield Ole's building? Gotta say this makes as much sense as linking us to Perisic.

If anything we need to get him now and give him a year to settle in. If pogba goes this summer and we get him and Fernandes to replace him I think it’ll turn out to be a very dodgy start.

Being awarded Midfielder of the Year means absolutely horseshit. Mhikitariyan was Bundesliga player of the year before he moved here and wasn't able to cut it.
Let's look at the players who were awarded in Italy this past season...
Handanovic was Goalkeeper of the year... Not sure if he would be considered by any of the top 6 teams
Quagliarella was Forward of the year.... He did end up top scorer but do you really think he's better than say Lukaku?
I'll give it to you.... Ronaldo performed well for his first season, Koulibaly is obviously a notch above most defenders and Zaniolo is an upcoming young player with great potential. However, Chiesa seemed rather deserving.

Now Bruno has been considered Primiera Liga Player of the year back to back years.... Does that make him sure to succeed in the PL... probably not

Fair enough, Milinkovic Savic played a deeper role...

Lazio Stats (Serie A)
Finished 8th
9 clean sheets last season
Conceded 46 goals
Won 17 games
Lost 13 games

Not judging him by goals and assists but those stats for the team are not great for whoever is playing deep in the center of midfield.

Have you seen marchisio in his prime?
He was definitely not average
Yes Marchisio is a great box to box midfielder. But I'm talking about his defensive skills, because some people here thinks SMS isn't good enough defensively.

Can anyone tell me why he did not make the Serie A team of the year but he was voted best midfielder of the year?

Comparison to Pogba needs to be specific, which Pogba we using for it. Do people think that Pogba at his lower level (lets be real, he had some of those games when he was unhappy or w/.e) is better than SMS at his high, then its waste of time to even discuss.

It seems that we're being linked with attacking midfielders who can possibly play deeper in a 4231 if/when needed. To me, its a good idea because if/when Pogba is injured/rested, then we could use that player in a deep position.

Pogba’s bottom level is lower than an average performance by any of our players. It’s unacceptably bad. Hopefully he’ll be much more focused and dynamic this time around (unless we sell him, then I’d happily see him continue the trend elsewhere).

When his competition are McTominay, Fred, Matic, 'LingZ' and Pereira then he absolutely is.

Dont be bashing McTominay :nono:. Anybody not excited by the progression in McTominays game in the last 6 months is a fecking idiot. Change my mind.

Buying a player for 80m means you are buying a world class player. He is nowhere near that status. Sure compared to Lingard and Pereira he is a better player. But those are academy players we did not buy.

Still he will make us a stronger team (and so will Bruno).
Now, we critically need 4 players to become competitive - after we buy SMS (or Bruno) we will only need 3.

Pogba, McTominay, Savic would be a strong MF.

Matic, Fred, Garner, Perreira as back up.

Starting any of Fred or Perreria would highlight our low ambition level. I can also understand the Glazers: you just bought a MF for 50m and he is only good enough for the bench?

I think people forget some of the previous back ups our best squads had. Hint, they weren't makelele, riquelme, guti or matthaus.

Opinions on whether he can he play with Pogba?

He can play with Pogba better than Pereira, Matic or Fred. But there is no guarantee that the trio of Pogba-SMS-McTominay will prove better than Silva/Silva-KDB/Gundogan-Rodri/Fernandinho midfield of the champions :(

McTom is going to have to play like a young Robson next year!

The way some of you are criticising this guy as if he's not good enough for us is fecking laughable. Don't think a lot of you remember last season by the sound of things, but guess what...We are SHIT. As it is our only top midfielder wants to leave us. We should be so lucky to even have someone as highly rated as SMS be willing to join us, we're a complete joke these days. Not showing feck all ambition this window and if anything things only look like they'll get worse next year.

I'm not even saying SMS is worth the reported fees that are being mentioned, but some of the people on here reacting to these rumours act like we have a prime Scholes and Keane lining out in the middle of the park for us every week. Well we don't!

Absolutely feck yeah would I take this guy if the chance is there, we need to vastly improve this piece of shit, jelly baby team.

AWB Doesn’t matter Shaw
Scott
SMS Bruno
Greenwood Martial Rashford

Wow.

Hearing this is the guy we want to replace pogba? I thought we were just getting him as another midfield option. If that’s true what a massive downgrade. At this point forget pogba wishes and feck Madrid. He can’t go this season especially when we are struggling to add quality players. When are we going to stop adding average players every year?

The irony, we did that with Pogba and he has been nowhere near world class either.

I know its exceptional comparisons, but you look at Messi/Ronaldo as examples, they are superb 5 times out of 10, very good 3 times out of 10, average 2 times out of 10 and awful 1 time out of 10 pretty much. Looking at Pogba here you could pretty much flip those upside down

Also we paid not far off £80m for Lukaku and I cant believe anybody would say he has been anywhere near world class.

We definately need an injection of quality in positions, but also need consistency, the right mentality, heart and desire. Whether that is SMS or not I dont know but not one of the players mentioned above has the lot and lets be honest £80m doesnt even buy you a ready made world class player now anyway, as crazy as that is

As far as 'pogba replacement' go he is a good option provided we can afford or close to afford maguire with the profit from the switch. Would love to hear the targets anyone else would want - tielemens or verratti or something else nuts

That's actually the weirdest way I've ever seen someone use stats to judge a player.
