The scouting staff must see something in him. He is relatively inexpensive. And a note to those that think AWB was expensive - Villa just paid 18 million for matt targett who to be honest has never done anything.

Very little seen of him but what i have seen looks good. He looks like he has a good range of passing.

That said I was more sure about AWB.

The big proven signings have failed us in past seasons - sanchez, di maria, falcao, schweinsteiger. And while they may not be world beaters straight away, are capable of developing. Zaha, Rafael and Depay are some that jump out at me who we might be getting some good use out of now if we kept them just as squad players.

why the hell does them being British make them a plus? This seems to be thing with Ole. I just want us to sign the best players we can (and we should be attractive to most) even if they come from the Moon

I didn't say that, if you read my post. It seems to be British players get a bad rap on here - usually getting slapped with the "overrated" tag. In the past, that's been right but there are lots of good English players coming through and clubs around Europe seem to be buying into that - especially in Germany.

My opinion (and it's nothing more than that) is that there are some potential advantages. The stature of the club potentially has more of an impact as a top club you don't want to move on from - rather than players looking at United as a stepping stone to other clubs in Europe. Also, a young player moving within the same country comes with obvious practical benefits, having family close by and being used to the weather and culture and experience of the PL. That said, its all about the player in each circumstance.

Signing the "best" player is a vague concept. We won't get the very top players because we're miles away from winning titles - other than players looking for a huge payday who may not have other options. That short term view is one of the reasons the club are where they are now in my opinion.

As such, the "best" route forward may well be to bring in a mix of youth and experience to build a solid base. Taking a punt on a player like this, for the money being touted seems to be a no brainer given what £20 million buys you these days.

I'm also a fan of bringing in young and brittish but there are better options out there like Rice for example. Those are the types I want us to sign.

He'll be at least three times the price. He's a regular at West Ham and has England caps. They'll want big money for him.

Granted, I don’t know the specifics but pretty sure it wasn’t an ACL injury - that’s a 9-12 month layoff. Most likely medial ligament.
I looked on his twitter and there was a video from 1 month ago saying he's back training, running and kicking a ball. So I'd imagine he's back in full training now.

I'd say Longstaff is a much better footballer than Rice.

Rice is your "typical" English player. Hard tackler, throws himself about gives it all, but lacks the finesse.

Longstaff is technically a better footballer than Rice, no doubt about that. Obviously technicality doesn't equate to a guarantee, but it is an indicator of a higher potential. Mentality is another side of things, and if he complements his technical prowess with a good mentality then he's got everything he needs to become a top player.

So do you see our midfield once Pogba leaves and Matic is done consisting of McTominay and Longstaff.
Not a dig at you, I just wonder what fans are seeing because for me that wins us nothing. For me as back ups, they would be fine. But I would expect us to have a midfield the caliber of the likes of the top teams in our league and Europe.
I would see our midfield starting off next season as Matic, Fernandes, Pogba. With Longstaff to take over from matic hopefully asap.

All speculation at this stage anyway.

Due to the homegrown rule that I believe will get even more stringent in coming years.

There's not much difference between the two. We need players who will be big improvements. Would rather pay a higher fee and get Rice.
McTominay's best form came when he was played in Herrera's role as a B2B, playing more advanced really suited his game a lot better than when we tried to shoehorn him in at DM. Longstaff's someone who plays deeper and is a much better technical footballer, there's a very big difference in all honesty.

The feck he does
He’s similar to Garner if anything which makes me wonder why we’d buy him
You could fit both in the team, that sort of midfield would really suit a possession-based team.

Good prospect maybe, but we need players ready to go, especially in the engine room.
We need players like Ndombele ,Partey, Fernandes, Barella, Ruiz. These are the type of playears for us.

He's only played 9 games mate. You can't judge by that.

Well, I'm judging what we've had to go off so far, so far he's shown to be good technically. You don't have to watch someone extensively to see if they're good technically or not.

A midfield 3 with Pogba n Fernandes would be a disaster.

It's a tricky one to call as he has so little experience in the Premier League, but if his YouTube clips are anything to judge by, he does seem to be a real talent.
He has played over 70 senior games on loan for Kilmarnock & at Blackpool last season, scoring 12 goals in the process, and some of those were screamers.

I suppose one way of looking at it, would you sign a 21 year old Carrick/Scholes/Beckham before they were established and became a household name with a huge price tag to match?

This could be a stroke of genius, but we shall just have to wait and see.....

Why would you look at it like that? There are no assurances that he'd even make it here yet alone be half as good as those players.

I wouldnt mind at all taking a punt here. The boy looked made for PL football based on last year and it might be important to get him early.

Get him signed and on full pre season. Then at the very least we have numbers for CM & are looking to see if a player is available to improve CM, replace lukaku if he leaves and improve CB

You miss the point.
Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but the point being, getting ahead of the curve.

Does anyone know if hes even running again?

Which we dont know if we would be, because he could just as easily turn out to be an Eric Djemba Djemba or a Phil Jones. You listed only extremely positive results so of course the answer to that question is yes we'd love a 21 year old Giggs, Beckham or Scholes. But we have no idea if thats what he is. Chances are that he isnt as those players dont come around that often.

Djemba Djemba had never proved his quality in the Premier league before he arrived.
Jones has been very unlucky. Injuries have ruined him.
No guarantees with Longstaff but Newcastle fans say he's their biggest young talent coming through from the past 10 years. Martin Keown reckons he'll be better than Declan Rice. He tore Man City's midfield a new one in one of his first games for the Geordie's.
He's definitely worth a punt if he's only gonna cost £25 million.

Neither has Longstaff. If we sign him hopefully he is worth a punt yes, but at no point should it be made out like hes going to be a Scholes, Beckham or Giggs.

Not even 10 premier league matches and suggesting he's like signing a 21 year old version of them. Crazy

It's nuts, could be worth it yes but I feel like people are enamoured more with the idea of signing a young British player than the actual player himself.

Benitez was keen on him. He essentially moulded Alonso into what he became - as good as he clearly was.

Longstaff is no household name, and far from a sure thing - but the basics are there to work from.

If attainable below 20m as papers suggest are in the region of our offers, it's worth a punt.

Yet he wanted Gareth Barry to replace him..

That 2008-09 was a tough one for Rafa, spare the Gareth Barry crazy moment.

But Alonso 2005 to 2008 was just , and it was highly annoying.

I think Benitez can definitely spot a good CM, Bazza madness aside.

If he’s the only midfield signing then we’d have issues. He can’t be worse than Matic but he’s only played 9 premier league games doesn’t help considering we also signed another player who hasn’t played much at a top level too.

I’m all for signing young players but we also need to be careful of signing too many inexperienced players. Signings like AWB make sense because he’s played a lot of matches for Palace and was one of their best player.

If we can get him for around 20m. Not sure what the fuss is, he's clearly very highly rated. I reckon it's his name and gormless face putting people off.

It's sad but it's true.

Clearly a big talent.
