Bruno is a great talent but he's a no 10. longstaff will need experience at his back not at his upfront.
We won't be signing two midfielders for the same position. I'm talking about what the team needs. Which we need both an offensive midfielder and a defensive one.

It's the kind of signing you'd make if you were coming out off a successful season rather than one of the worst ones in the last 30 years, but I guess we decided next season is a bit of a write off.

No one is writing it off everyone wants us to get back in the top 4 and this lad could help. We only need to improve consistency really to have a realistic chance of achieving that goal. Issue is everyone on here wants us to assemble a title challenging team this summer......and that's what the fan base has to address....not the club.

You're talking about risk but Longstaff would come in quite cheap. What's more, Partey is shite. You won't get much added value from him.

He really isn't shit

Like I said in the Twitter thread a midfield of Longstaff + McTominay + a do it when I can be arsed Pogba doesn't look like one that will strike fear into the opposition
What about Longstaff and McTominay behind Pogba and Bruno, who play behind two extra-wide forwards (Martial and Rashford)?
4-2-2-2? It won't happen of course.

Tell me why it won't work please. I'm really curious. A lack of width? Those forwards can alternate as wingers and Pogba and Bruno can push up through the middle.

We'll need someone a defensive midfielder irrespective of us signing Longstaff or not. Matic is on a free fall.

Get a few more players like this, try do to a good season and get the top talents next transfer window when it is realistic.

All I want is improvement. That won't happen overnight.

He's terrible on the ball. He wouldn't improve us much if at all. At least with Longstaff we can see composure, willingness to carry the ball forward, technical ability to spread play and the energy to close players down. When I watch partey I just see the energy aspect but his touches and general passing ability is below par.

We won't be able to fill every hole in one summer it's unrealistic. It's about building over the next 2 to 3 years. That's how much of a hole we are in.

Agreed. We are literally years off challenging for the title but in terms of top four we were only 5 points off last season, despite both early and late season collapses. Since then Chelsea have lost their manager, star player and the ability to make transfers, potentially making next year's top four race that much easier from our point of view.

Signings like AWB, James and Longstaff would be for the future, sure, but I don't see why they couldn't also help bridge that five point gap next year too.

He will cost more then 25million pound,if anybody expecting him to cost that then rest assure you will be in for a surprise.

No England caps only a few appearances. Why is he costing more except for the fact we want him.

Ship out Pogba; get Tielemans and Maddison as well as Longstaff and that's a good midfield rebuild for the short-, mid-, and long-term.

Yep I know just saying I could see a 3 of Longstaff Pogba Bruno. Bruno can play box to box. Longstaff can sit ala Carrick. Not saying it would work but I could see us going for that

Herrera and Fellaini. However that's not the real issue either. As said, I wouldn't have mind these sort of signings if we had Keane/Carrick + Scholes in midfield. You'll know that they would protect them, cover for them etc. But we don't have that. Pogba is immature, Fred is out of place and Matic is in decline.
I agree with all of that. Also agree that these promising youth type signings are risky without leaders in the team to guide them. And what happened to all our own youth? This isn't how it should be. There should be a natural evolution of the squad and it hasn't happened - this dates back to Fergies time (towards the end).

However, I completely understand why Ole is doing this. It's almost a necessity at this point.

I don't think that Longstaff is ready yet to take over from Matic.
Fosu played there as a youth and in under 21s but Van Gall played him as a RB. I would like to try him there with Matic in games this season. Or else bring in an experienced DM. Longstaff may turn out to be a good one but so too could Fosu. Give our own a chance first.

Another typical Square peg in a round hole signing if you ask me. As said I rate Bruno alot but he's a no 10. The further away from the box you take him the less effective he becomes.

I wonder if Longstaff is being bought out of need or out of necessity. If rumours of us having to stick to a 100m budget are true then Longstaff on a 25m bid might be all that we can afford.

Yes, Bruno is an Attacking Midfielder.

Well other clubs buy 6 players per season so why can't we? Partey is pretty much a straight forward transfer as well. He's got a minimum fee clause of around 40-50m. Irrespective of that, if we're going for yet another season with no cover/competition for Matic then we are searching for trouble.

Exactly my thoughts and that is a realistic pressure for those young lads coming in....get us top 4. Not we must beat city and liverpool in all match ups next year and chase for the biggest prizes. Give me Sancho, De Ligt and 3 other steller names and I still wouldn't put my house on a title charge. We are just light years away from our ownership, manager, scouting down to achieve right now. Everyone at the club needs to improve massively.

We need 2 CM ideally. Bruno and Longstaff could both be needed, especially if Pogba does go.

Longstaff is literally Carrick.Would be good buy and also rebuilding team with young players with desire to succeed is our obvious plan and probably a good one with our recent failure with big names but also seems like Ole knows which players would compliment his preferred style of play and that is the right way for the future success.

We already lost Herrera and Fellaini + Matic is in decline. If Pogba leaves then we would need 3 midfielders not 2.

With Benitez off and uncertainty surrounding Newcastle, this would be a good time to move for Longstaff.

Would be our most exciting signing IMO. A wonderfully talented footballer who can pass at a very good level long or short with either peg whilst playing in a deeper role. He's also very mobile and has high energy/stamina levels that would really help us off the ball and get us closer to being amongst the hardest working teams in the league. He would add much needed intensity which was missing for large parts last season with/without the ball.

He showed in his performances against City and Chelsea that he can bang with the best domestically. I'm hoping we can wrap this deal up soon. He will be for us what alot on here expected from Ruben Neves if we had signed him IMO. The only clear difference being, the Geordie is more mobile in comparison with fantastic fitness levels to go with his fantastic composure, vision/passing and would cost considerably less.

This. It seems that we are targeting players who play well against our big rivals - James had a blinder against City, so did Longstaff. AwB played well in almost all the big games too. Hope this mentality can translate to even better performances from our team.

How can he be LITERALLY Carrick ?

He literally isn't though

Longstaff has a very promising upside. I am starting to get very, very hyped about this transfer window now that Wan-Bassaka is confirmed. a 45 million + 5 million add-on deal for a fullback shows that the club means business when they say they want to get younger and develop real talent. At the same time we've signed a player that is ready to contribute now.

Saw that we're also completing the signing of several youngsters who will no doubt go through the academy.

The future as it seems, is very bright indeed

If we're signing youngsters who have a couple of good games against our rivals that would have seen us sign a lot of crap over the years.

Ole gets it. A sustainable long term approach. Buy talented young players who can give us 10 years of service. No more scrambling to replace aging players for huge fees. Keep adding young quality when it comes available. This is how the club should be run. I can wait to see how the squad develops over the next couple of years under Ole.
