Not a big fan of him but he can definitely do a job. I don’t think he will ever be good enough to start for a top side but I would not mind keeping him. Good performance yesterday.

I thought Scott was brilliant yesterday. The way he runs with the ball through the centre of the pitch and midfield reminds me a bit of Yaya. He’s very good at carrying the ball, hardly loses it.

That and finishing is his biggest strengths.
When you appreciate the good and maybe accept some of the “less good” he still looks like a really promising young player.

That said, he is not really young any more and hasn’t developed into a player you can trust in a midfield Two. He’s the sort of guy you’d love to have in the team if you could pick 12 players. Nice to see him play close to his best and, as I said earlier in this thread, I think he is useful to have in the squad but it is natural to wonder if a parting of ways might suit him and us better, at this stage of his career.

Sometimes you must see the game through your eyes and ignore the numbers. It was a top performance from him yesterday even if you ignore the goal.

He had a his passing accuracy in the late 80s. Higher than even Bruno Fernandes', he created 3 Key passes, had the second highest touches of all our midfielders yet some still want to convince us he was super sloppy on the ball.......its incredible
Being dispossessed doesn't show up in passing stats though.
He was dispossessed 7 times. Next highest was Rashford... with 3. So yeah, sloppy is the right word.

Interesting the double standards seen on here.

Bruno G for Newcastle was being lauded with having an outstanding display against us the other week, despite being dispossessed 4 times, having less key passes than McT yesterday, only one more pass completed, having less touches than McT yesterday, and no goal to show for it.

If we want to become the best then we need to have higher standards than this guy. He's always capable of putting in a good shift like yesterday but overall he'll never be good enough. Could you imagine Real Madrid persisting with this guy in midfield for so many years?

Dani Ceballos gets semi regular game time for Madrid and he was awful in the Premier League.

Are you sure it's the same people though? I've never posted about Guimarães.

You do know he’s not first choice at United don’t you?

I like McTominay. Always have. My biggest problem is when he is asked to play a position which doesn't suit him. McTominay is a #8. A box to box midfielder. That is it. He is not a #6 and not a #10. I was hoping he could develop into a #6 but he doesn't have the discipline for it. he is too high energy and is best when running. Games like Saturday showed just how good he can be, and how he can be valuable to us as a squad player who can rotate in at times

If we received an offer >20 Mio, I really do not see any reason to keep him. He may be a decent squad player for a team of our level at the best

Wouldn't mind seeing him with Casemiro on the pitch. In fact, I'd rather have Eriksen or Fernandes rotate with Casemiro than the other three midfielders. I feel Fred and Mctominay are the same kind of player: high energy, box to box midfielders that don't offer much around the mid circle. As we saw in the last two games their game is much elevated when their midfield partner can make the play.

Screw that. If he was at Newcastle they’d be asking for 50 mil.
Yeah but it's this kind of thinking that led to us keeping Lingard and then losing him for nothing (not exactly the same situation I guess, as I don't believe McTominay only has a year left on his contract.)

Feck 20 million. In this market he's worth at least 35-40 million. You get a decent player, with a good eye for goal when playing in an advanced position and a good physical presence. Also can play in a variety of positions.

Yeah but it could go in the pot to buy an expensive striker or midfielder.

If we will afford an expensive striker or midfielder 20 mil would be 20% maximum, so not much. Think we can get that simply by releasing players that play 0 minutes every season.
At least MCT can be relied upon when needed and was needed in a lot of games this season.

I can't see ten Hag selling him. Reason being is that we have much more important priorities, and that is to strengthen our starting XI, with a ST, CM, GK and RB. Therefore, I can't see why ten Hag would sell him, as it would add to our list of priorities in getting a back up for Casemiro. Is he a specialist 6? No, but we've seen that he can do a job there. He's also very versatile, which is something ten Hag admires.

Having said that, if we were to receive a good offer, whatever that may be, then ten Hag could be tempted to sell, but as I said, as it stands, I'd keep him as back up to Casemiro.

Decent outing against Everton BUT MCT has mastered the art of being invisible in most games, occasionally popping up with crucial contributions to just about redeem his status as a squad player. He tends to be highly risk averse and doesn’t typically look as assured as a Manchester United midfielder should be.

I don’t think he should be a staple feature of our midfield in any shape or form going forward.

You can count the amount of decent games he has had this season on one hand. He is our most sellable asset and we can definitely improve on him. Cash in and sign some better midfielders

Sums it up nicely, he’s worth a decent fee and not difficult to replace. If there’s a good offer we’d be stupid not to take it.

exactly. And yet people keep talking about keeping him while somehow claiming the one position he can be backup for in the midfield is prob his worst.

20 mil is peanuts in today's market.
For that kind of money we better keep him as a squad player.

His value in the current inflated market may be 30-35 Mil likely.
But running after the market value, it is one of the reasons we have been failing in selling players over the last decade and the club became a stockpile of dead woods.

The other clubs know we have to sell. If we got 30-35, it would be great. Otherwise better selling him for a decent sum of money and promoting players from our youth system.

Been one of his biggest critics but credit when its due his last two games were pretty good by his standards. Looks like the recent international break in which he bagged 4 goals in 2 games (double against Spain) done him the world of good confidence wise. Hoping he's back soon just to have as an option on the bench as our squad is threadbare just now with these injuries.

Other than Maguire and Weghorst who in my opinion are just not talented enough to play on this level McTominay has the needed attributes to be a decent footballer to a certain extent.
However, I think it is better for him and us to part ways. He has been around for too long and never really convinced for longer periods.

Scott is a sneakily injury prone player.

I don't know the stats but he misses a fair few games I'd say.

Yeah we would have surely won with him in the team.
I can't agree, I don't think we would have won but possibly we might not have been so bad.
Despite the view that he is "crap", he isn't really.
We needed some physicality last night and Scott has provided that in previous European games.

No, we needed football ability last night and Scott, at this level, hasn't got it.

With the exception of Bruno, virtually all of our football ability was involved at some point.
In my opinion a more balanced approach may have been better.

We missed Bruno, Varane, Martinez and a fully fit Rashford and Shaw. We didn’t miss someone who doesn’t even play (started one Europa game this season), even if he was fit he wouldn’t have come on until game was done and dusted. A headless chicken who hardly touches the ball was exact opposite of what we needed in midfield anyway.
