Do you want a midfield of Martinez and Mctominay?

We can't play a player purely because they're tall. This isn't basketball

He probably is a box to box attacking midfielder but there are 4 players ahead of him in those positions imo. I always look to Henderson to see what Mctominay can become but it'll be difficult for him given the talent we have in the squad.
That’s not what @Walrus was suggesting.

You don’t have to be a defender to help out at set pieces. RvP was outstanding at it.

If he stays I think he will end up being a reserve right back or a reserve Centre Half

What indication do you have to that?

I can point the last 4 years where he has been a regular in midfield.

In pre season, he was first choice CM.

he's not good enough for that position

If he looks this bad in preseason, imagine what hes going to be like during the season. How deluded do you have to be to think ten hag has a magic wand to turn this guy into a decent player? Offered literally nothing throughout the entire first half.

He hasn’t looked bad, which kind of negates your entire point. He’s been fine.

Works his balls off and is a good lad but just not possessing of the quality we need in CM. Surely will be mostly on the bench this year.

He was absolutely fine in that half, what are people actually complaining about in his performance, he had 1 miscontrol from a thigh high ball in the middle of the half but other than that are there specific complaints beyond the reflex repetitions?

If your point of reference is the standard Manchester United midfield performance of the past 5, sure. If you judge him by the standard midfield performance of a top half of the table team in any of the top 5 leagues, he is awful. I hate this argument but you just have to watch more football if you think he is anything beyond an awful midfielder.

I hate this argument but you just have to watch more football if you think he is an awful midfielder. Regular 6/10 in the Premier league and Champions League is so far from awful.

Far from awful is not good enough for our midfield

He isn't good enough. Being a passion merchant isn't going to get us anywhere. He'll be hiding again come liverpool.

If he plays at central midfield which seems to be his current position, he will do quite fine. DM is not a good position for him.

He lacks quality and yet we desperately need him to stay fit because the club has decided this isn't a position where we need reinforcements badly.

He can't get in the Scottish midfield. Is he even good enough to get in midfield for any top 10 club in the Premier league? Running around and trying to get stuck in is admirable, but any caf member could do that. We need someone who can actually put our play together and actually screen the defence, he can't do either.

Thats more because Scotland can’t get rid of the midfielders they have so use the more versatile player versatile.

We used to have a midfield of:
Scholes Carrick Hargreaves Fletcher Anderson

there is a reason why we used to be PL and CL contenders and now we don't.

We also beat Arsenal in an FA cup quarter final with a midfield of the Da Silva twins, Gibson and o Shea.

We also used to win titles with Cleverly and Giggs in midfield.

Stop avoiding the question. Is he good enough to get in another top 10 premier league club (except ours of course)? Where else would he start in the premier league? If your answer doesn't involve more than 10 clubs, then he shouldn't even be here as a squad player either.

No but he is good enough to be a squaddie of Arsenal, Leicester and Spurs.

We are currently at that level - top 3 to 6 - just because we need desperate first team starters doesn’t mean he is useless.

We are not in the time where we are the top 2 clubs fighting for the title - we are a top 6 club fighting for a top 4 and I see him safely in the squad of many.

what does this even mean? Get rid of to where? They played him RB the other day.

He can't get in the Scottish midfield.

It's not fair to say that Scott McTominay can't get into the Scotland midfield.

Scotland have used McSauce in central midfield around 50% of the time and as a right sided centre back around 50% of the time over 2021 and 2022. In June, he played 164 minutes as a right sided centre back and 146 in central midfield across four games.

He is solid, shows for the ball more than usual, and does well when we don't have possession, but I expect Fred to take his if we get De Jong. Fred will be more progressive and creative in possession alongside the defensive contribution.

He's more than good enough to get in the majority of premiership teams, Liverpool often play Keita, Arsenal play Xhaka, Spurs have played Skipp and Winks, Leicester have played Ndidi and Choudhury,

McT is miles better than any of them and many more. Your question doesn't even warrant asking.

:wenger: :wenger: :wenger: :wenger:

The same nonsense was spouted about Lingard and he is now at a newly promoted club. McTominay is lower Premier league level and that's on a good day, he was poor last year that I would even question if he is Championship level

Conveniantly forgetting that he went to West Ham and absolutely smashed it.
