So damn much negativity here towards our players. What happen to be glad he did well and support and hope the player to keep performing. No rather people will moan that he will not reach Messi level while hyping every potential transfer for us, but once we get them change around and claim they are shit.

Exactly, people moaning about not giving youth players a go and then when we do oh there shite or bang average after a good debut no less. What the feck are they expecting? Every player has to be the next flavour of the month sensation.

Look at how many good to great players had poor or anonymous seasons let alone starts and turned out good.

Fact is we won't know either way untill time progresses.

It’s depressing, some of these posters should take a good look in the mirror before they spout their vile comments about a young player in his full debut against a PL side.

What the feck am I reading
Kid makes debut in basically a holding midfield role and plays well, grew as the game went on and yet so many posts about him being nothing special. feck me we've gone full circle, from ridiculously hyping our youngsters to running them down.

I’m not even gonna scroll back to read that shite.

Glad this page is full of sense at least. I thought he played well. Seems to be developing nicely. Really grew into the game and played an important part in us bossing midfield from start to finish.

Exactly, its nuts. I thought he looked pretty solid, handy and promising for the future. What the feck else do people want from a very young cm who probably doesn't even know his own game yet.

What an encouraging bunch you lot are. Wonder how you would feel if your boss, or mum or teacher called you bang average and nothing special.

He had a good game. Hasn't waited around to try and get involved which is impressive for a youngster, wants the ball and gets stuck in. Can see why Jose likes him; it will be interesting to see how he develops. Many wrote of the likes of Darren Fletcher, including me, but look how effective he turned out to be.

Had a solid game throughout. I was particularly impressed with his awareness and positioning in general, but for future games I'd like to see him take more risks on and off the ball with forward passes and runs. I think he's got those attributes in his locker.

If i get a premier league footballer wages i wouldnt care how anyone called me... that includes my mum. I wouldnt even complain if it was the wages of a average player like Lingard

You do realise that there are millions in the world who would say the same exact thing about you? That if they got your life, they wouldn't complain about you. This argument that salary or wealth somehow eliminates a person's basic rights for respect and entitles others to spout whatever drivel they feel like is one of the most self centred trends of the social media age which is saying something.

Yep, I would do lots of shameful things for 100k/wk. Not to mention top players don't give a toss about fan opinion. If Mctominay has any bottle he won't care about his haters.

Very good, stable, professional game by the lad. Hope he continues on this path.

I thought he had a good game overall. Did especially well whenever Romero made a shocking clearance, twice managing to flick/head the ball further up the field when we could have been in trouble. Good tracking runners and shutting down their midfield, including just prior to our first goal. Passing relatively safe but only noticed him lose possession once. Could have done better on his shot from just outside the box though no real surprise when a player shoots way over from that position.

We would have learned more had he been put on at half-time against Huddersfield instead of say Mkhitaryan. Against Swansea we had control after Lingard's first goal so really just needed to avoid doing anything stupid, especially once we went 2-0 up. In that context McTominay's performance was fine.

100% agree with this.

He's not flashy like Pereira. But his decision making is a hell of a lot quicker. I rarely go away from games unimpressed by him.

It's awful isn't it? the kids only 21 yet some people expect him to be in Championship in 5 years, I still believe he has the ability to be as good as Fletcher, who in the beginning of his career also has a lot people slate him, he's solid with the ball, has physical presence, and I hope he improves all aspect of his play

I don't see this potential to be as good as fletcher. What does he even bring beside physicality and being ok on the ball?

Definitely seems to have enough about him to make it at Premiership level. Questions remain on if he'll be able to make it at United. Might just be backup.

Good game from him today though.

our new john o'shea , does nothing special but a physical presence,
fergie used to play O'shea as CM as well.
average but needed in every squad

Fletcher in his early days is also nothing but physical presence and ok on the ball, Fergie used to play him on the right side and he really offer nothing, cannot cross, not quick, passing is inconsistent, and years later he become our most important player

The point is it's pathetic that we always demand the manager to play youngster in the team, and the moment he doesn't produce anything brilliant instantly we slate him and say he is championship level, patience is key, whether he become good or not nobody will know

Not very similar at all as Mikel could only defend and had a heart attack if he received the ball in or around the opposition penalty box.
You know Mikel used to be an attacking mid? Even for his national team, he was utilised much further forward than he was at Chelsea, sometimes even playing at 10. Funnily enough, every time Mctominay receiver the ball in advanced positions he looked like he'd have a 'heart attack'.

He's the slowest player on the pitch. He looks slower than Carrick. I think people are trying to hype him up, but I have yet to see anything special.

Pretty much spot on.

Who's hyping him up? Have you even bothered to read this thread?

Really impressed by the lad. Most of the people are not impressed because he is not flashy. But that’s not his job. He was playing in midfield 2 and his job was to keep it simple, keep possession of the ball, be available to receive ball from defence and defensive cover. He did these things perfectly considering he is just 20. If he continues to play this role he will definitely get better and maybe be more adventurous with his passing. Lets see how he develops. Excited for him.

He didn’t delicately dribble around four players, didn’t score a brace, and didn’t do anything flashy. Even his namr is a bore. Not good enough at this level and at best, Championship standard. Should be sold in January or in the summer.

Grew into the game as it went on, second half had some really good moments. Blood went to his head when he got near goal - he had a few good opportunities that a seasoned pro would have done much better with. But he got into the right places so that bodes well.

Decent performance. As many said, grew into his role as the game progressed. Maybe it was just me, but I thought, positionally, he was a little suspect, but that's understandable.

There are always posts saying player X will never make it.. Its a safe bet. most players coming up through the ranks dont make it at United.

Its always nice to see supporters who have no interest in being supportive.

Rio Ferdinand said he used to be a goal scoring attacking midfielder - Ronny Johnsen used to play as a striker. There's a reason why they didn't play for the top clubs there. Mikel was terrible in attack.

Are you unsure about what Carrick does? Because its a hell of a lot more than keeping it simple. McTominay doesn't come even close to Carrick's passing ability.

I think I have an idea of what Carrick does, yes. McTominay obviously doesn't have the skills or the level of a prime Carrick, not even close, but he isn't very different in style. Carrick was never flashy or did the "get you off your seats" moves, and thus he went under the radar for quite some time. McTominay strikes me as being in the same vein. He looks composed even under pressure, and that is something that stands out from most young players.

Seeing him live, he really is a big lad. Can see why Jose likes him. Keeps things pretty simple & looked good overall. But hard to judge properly as the swans were terrible last night.
Good to see a youth player get a chance though.

A few of his stats:

- Second highest passes in the game - 60. (Tuanzebe first).
- 85% pass success (Only Darmian had worse).
- 3 times fouled (only Martial fouled more, 4 times).
- 5 aerial duels won (by far the best, Smalling 2nd highest on 3).
- Joint 3rd highest amount of touches - 71 (Tuanzebe, Lingard 1st/2nd).
- 2 tackles won (Smalling, Herrera joint 1st on 3, Tuanzebe, Darmian, Blind on 2).

You can see why Jose likes him. Imposing presence in the middle of the pitch, winning aerials and being fouled. Doesn't shy away from the ball, having a high touch count and 2nd highest passing. But he needs to improve his passing which by the numbers let him down. If he could improve his passing then he'd be a useful asset in the squad imo. Someone who can come into a game when we're getting over run and stabilise the midfield.

After watching his good debut I am certain that this boy is bang average and is destined to be cleverly or championship level at best.

My reasons for saying this are just because I can.

I suspect you are acting the maggot but the issue is its hard to tell on here when it comes to posters talking about players.

Good game overall. He has a physical presence, which is useful. Hope he gets more game time, with all these injuries.

For a 20 year old CM his positioning and tactical discipline are fantastic. I would say those are his stand out attributes together with his composure and physical presence

Agreed, which I think Mourinho will love about him. Think he will be a good squad player for us, hopefully he sees enough minutes one way or the other.
