Started well I thought but at fault for the goal. He was drawn to Hazard and lost Willian, possibly naively following his tactical instructions too closely in that moment.

and Pogba as well. Best midfielder on show, but that is not saying much considering the overall state in the middle..

Matic has got on the ball twice as much, Pogba has done some good work carrying the ball forward. Neither have been great but both have been far more effective than McTominay in their roles.

I don't know what all the above comments are all about, i thought he's been ok.

Nothing flash, nothing that stands out, but not made any mistakes, good positioning and kept the ball rolling.

he didn't switch off...you could see he thought his man was eden (as that's the job he's been asked to do). Just too young and inexperienced to recognise that the immediate danger was willian. The job he's been asked is too big for him. Shouldn't be starting.

He was tracking Willian, you don't just stop to look at another player, schoolboy error I'm afraid. He let Hazard go later in the half. He's a liability out there.

He did switch off he was ball watching whilst someone got a free run at goal, that’s just poor play no matter who you are and Hazard has plenty of players round him.

Its not about making mistakes, its about having an effect on the match. He's had 23 touches, 1 more than Lukaku. Matic has had 51 and Pogba 44.

Perhaps thats because he's buzzing about winning the ball a lot like Ander last season? Well no, he made 0 tackles and 1 interception.

Some people seem to be happy with very little as long as a player doesnt make individual mistakes.

I thought he's doing alright, apart from the goal situation. It was a collective mistake but he could've reacted better, regardless of what his instructions were. He'll learn from that, hopefully.

He's doesn't offer anything offensively, at this point, however.

Pretty harsh comments.

He’s doing a man marking job on Hazard so his first reaction whenever Hazard has the ball is to close him down.

It was the wrong decision but he couldn’t legislate for the defenders behind him being in no mans land too, and Valencia playing everyone onside.

Think people are too hard on him. Apart from the goal situation he is doing ok. Pogba is also to be blamed for the goal with that half arsed attempt at first time ball and not tracking back at all.

I don't really like Pogba today, he's really poor. He's moving the ball forward but hardly effective not to mention completely useless in the defensive phase.

Maybe looks a bit out his depth in this game. He is doing some good things but also at times he looks as if his inexperience is showing. Still a solid option for this team at the moment. Is Fellaini injured again or is him not playing recently contract related?

I'll give him the benefit of the doubt but I thought defensive awareness was a strength of his. He looks pretty comfortable in possession too I'll add and I won't judge his offensive production too harshly considering Jose's slow poison style of football.

Did you actually watch? The player steps on Pogba's boot and it comes off. I mean sure, its entirely possible for him to sprint back without his boot but there actually arent that many players who do that. And if our team had any organization whatsoever defensively we'd have easily dealt with their attack. Instead Valencia plays him onside for no reason when Valencia is 10 yards deeper than everyone else and Willian has a decent chance on goal.

On the goal, he is the most culpable. Willian was his man to track.

But plenty blame can go around. Pogba should have challenged the header. Ashley Young could have dropped back like a natural fullback would after Lindelof decided to come out aggressively on Hazard. De Gea was upset he didn't get closer to the shot.

Unfortunately, when the team is not playing at its best, young players get exposed. Everyone was tracking Hazard, probably according to their instructions, and no one followed Willian.

Ultimately he's an extra body that prevents us from being grossly outnumbered in midfield but we all know he doesn't have the quality to be much more than that.

These reactions saying he is a nothing player

He let willian walk which resulted in a goal. Things like these come down to experience. He is 21 years old and only just started playing for the first team. There is an immense pressure on him and this game so no surprise he makes a few mistakes, unfortunately it resulted in a goal.
Lets not forget Lingard is 25 and only really stepped up this season

Can't see anything he's particularly good at, can I say that or is he at that stage where no one can say anything bad about him cos he's homegrown

Sanchez would probably done that for example. He didn't even looked bothered. It's not only this situation but as a whole, and not tracking back is not his main fault there but positioning himself like that and losing the header.

Anyone who has played the game knows the goal was an error on his part, man marking job or not. That doesn’t spell the end of his first team career, just means he messed up. Young players make mistakes.

Yeah he's been better than Pogba and Matic :wenger:

There's ways to defend players without blatant lies. Ffs.

But Lingard showed a load of promise when he was younger, McTominay hasn't. That's the difference. Just blindly hoping he's going to develop major aspects of his game based on zero evidence isn't good enough.

If you're going to be a player that 'does the simple things' well, then you're going to have to be near flawless with it. If you're not going to win the ball back regularly, score goals, dictate play or create then allowing a player to run off you for a goal simply isn't acceptable.

In the 5 games he has played for the first team? Come on.

He didn't start playing football at the start of the season mate.

There's a huge difference between player for the u23 and playing for the first team. I'm not saying he has been spectacular. I'm just saying you can't call someone a "nothing player" when he's still getting used to the pressure of playing for the first team, especially against top teams like Celsea.

Perhaps the expectations have something to do as well. To me Pogba and Matic should be running this game. Pogba is the most expensive midfielder ever and should be at his peak, and Matic is world class as well(or has been not while ago).

McTominay is still very inexperienced and will make mistake here and there, today he's in a defensive B2B role, not sure what people are expecting of him?

There is. If a player can't impress in the U23s what makes you think he can do it in the premier league? We've based our view on what we've seen. You've based yours on what to haven't seen. Again, what have you seen of him that would imply he has more to his game?

He's does his job well, Jose has given him a task in the team and he does it to the tee, bet if he was called McTominainho the cafe haters would be all for him.

We've played Chelsea more than once, you know.

And poor in every single one from that game to this?

@ivaldo fair enough, but Herrera doesn't impress me that much more than Mctominay considering he has much more experience, the stick Mctominay gets is sometimes unjustifiable here, obviously for the goal he was poor but no worse than our other midfielders of late, probably says more about the state of our midfield but still.

Horrible mistake for the goal - Everything else was very good. McTominay is here to stay.

He isn't a type that will catch the highlight reels tho. Fletcher didn't overly impress in the youth team as well, neither when he started his career at United. He's just 21 and for midfielder is pretty young.

He wins the ball back significantly more and has shown, despite his critics, time and time again he has the ability to pick an excellent pass. There's not a single facet of the game SM is better at.
