Did well, wouldn’t be against him starting Sunday, as I would allow us to match Chelsea in midfield and have Herrera man marking Hazard.

McTominay is a curious case, because no one had hopes for him to really become a player, and suddenly Mourinho, who has an awful reputation for playing and fostering youth, after he lets A.Pereira go on loan, sees something in him and actually uses him in the Champions League, of all! If he gets him right and indeed McTominay becomes, over time, a true United player, even if only a squad useful one, Mourinho destroys the myth.

People will still somehow credit van Gaal with discovering him, because he once whole his hand in training or called out his name loud during academy game or something.

Absolutely. God knows he's been given enough of a chance to show us what he's made of. If he can't put in more than a 7 out of 10 performance in the Champions League against the current Portugese double winners in his second start for us, get rid.

Brilliant :lol::lol::lol:

Very solid performance, some nice interceptions in the first half. Question marks about his passing ability but he didn't look out of place, and seems to have a very good mentality.

Decent performance and has a lot of potential development to be future stars for Manchester United. It is an understanding that he doesn't want to put a foot wrong or make wrong decisions. We still haven't discovered his talent or ability yet. if he still improves a lot next few years, to replace Matic when Matic get older and leave United. I'm glad Moctominay put a lot of faith in us knowing he won't get a lot of time playing for us when he could join any club as he can get a lot of time playing there

He didnt want him to go on loan. If Pereira stayed it's likely he would be the one getting the game time.

First time I thought he might be a decent squad player was pre-seasons. Very happy to see this lad getting few starts, I'm not sure if Scott is talented enough to bring the world to his knees, but if he could replicate Lindgard and become a safe, stable option for games where we need to rotate, I think he will be happy with that. I really like the way he links with Matić. Good player, always brilliant to have an academy lad like that. Keep working hard man.

To be honest, if Perieria stayed, he'll be a 2nd first choice after Mkhi or Mata and maybe fight for earning first choice starter if Mkhi and Mata are out of form. Mctominay and Perieria are different.

He was average. First half was poor. Second half better but no creativity whatsoever. Battled and worked hard but I don't know what he brings to the team exactly.

I think he's done very well so far when you consider that two years ago he was 5"6 and a striker. I imagine learning a completely different position and then forcing yourself into the first team squad in the space of two years is quite difficult.

Dont get it
Just the way people were praising van Gaal over the moon for giving chance to young players and crediting him with everyone Barcelona and Bayern had ever promoted before United, yet Mourinho hardly ever gets any credit for giving debuts and gets a lot of stick for sending out young players on loan.

So, A.Pereira started games for us at #6 and #8, never at #10 or even on the wings, but still Mourinho would play him there, sure.

He said he didn't want him, but still allowed him. You describe it like the player has the last word. And not only would he get McTominay's minutes and starts, but more, he would probably allow Mourinho to variate to a three man midfield more often, for instance, at Huddersfield and in the next away game.

I'm usually quite a harsh critic of academy players in the first team but I liked him last night. Acceptable performance in the context of things.

Decent performance, kept things ticking over solidly.
Height and physicality are his stand out feature, and quicker than you'd expect.

Whether he's in any way the standard needed to become a regular starter, or at least well utilised squad player is anyone's guess, but plenty of time for that.

I know, the times have definitely changed. I remember being excited about Cleverley. McTominay has about the same sort of standing amongst his youth side contemporaries as Cleverley had amongst his - not a star, not a duffer, never really expected to break into the first team - but his technical basics are a different story.

If I remember correctly youth team watchers were calling Cleverly the next Scholes before he made his debut. His failure was one of the biggest disappointments in the youth setup in recent years going of the hype around him then

The player does have the last word as Mourinho wants players who are happy and 100% committed. He said similar after Schneiderlin asked to leave.

Imagine Klopp said that about Coutinho, the laughs! Mourinho just wants the players concentrated, he doesn't respect those who aren't ready to fight for a spot, so he lets them go. That particular policy of him cost Chelsea Lukaku and de Bruyne, so…

Very controlled performance. Usually when youngsters get a chance in the main team they are full of energy and running because they want to impress everyone. So, I have mixed feels about him. On one hand he has not shown anything really extraordinary but on the other hand he has kept things simple, has been disciplined, followed the managers instructions and is going about things slowly. Can see why Mourinho likes him. Think even LVG would have taken a liking to him, even above the more obvious talent of A. Pereira.

You're horribly wrong. Cleverley wasn't regarded at all, it was only he when he started excelling on his Watford loan stint in the Championship that people started to notice him.

I sense he has much more to offer attackingly, quick turns and passes forward, etc. Might see him free himself in the CSKA or the Bristol League Cup game, if he gets another chance, since our midfield will probably be recovered by then.

He seems rather unfazed by it all which is good, fairly unadventurous but JoMou's probably told him to keep it simple at all times.

He's a bit like Fellaini without any of his outstanding qualites at the moment and he's slotted in nicely in that role.

Also why bother to read or understand the post when you can act like a sarcastic little teenager. He is not a special talent and there is nothing wrong in that, maybe he works hard and grows into one, but right now or even in youth squads he was ever considered as a special talent like, gomes/pogba/Morisson/Fletcher/Oshea.

I also have watched Mctominay in reserves and he dint impress in 20 odd games he has played there, i think he had growth problems too and was injured alot. Still i and i can say many reserve watchers would not have expected him to make this step up.

Considering the kid was a 5ft 6 inch striker a season and a half ago, I'd say he's doing pretty well to start in the Champions League for Manchester United's midfield.

He was moved there because of no available strikers to play for the U23s, if I recall it.

Yes. Feel he has been told to hold back. Would like to see how he looks like when he is given the license to express himself.

Can't understand some of the criticism. This is only his 2nd start, he looks composed and confident, if he keep at it and word hard he can make it here, especially by being a solid squad player that we can rely to. He is not fancy but does the basics well and seem he is not fazed by pressure which is a big bonus for such a young lad. Every squad needs players like him, hopefully he will continue to develop and get better and better !!

He's big and strong and surprisingly skilful, but he was getting overwhelmed by the Benfica midfield. Looked like they were targeting him to win possession or run at, little bit out of his depth. Hopefully he'll have learned plenty from that game and be more ready to step in when he's needed in future. Definitely some big positives in that performance but a difficult game for him.

No. Same as McTominay he didn't even play much for the U18s.

I thought he looked like a 20 year old ball playing CB playing in midfield due to an injury crisis. With his physical qualities and technical skills, we might be comparing him to Nemanja Vidic if he had made his CL debut at CB vs a squad like Benfica.

Completely agree.

The Caf is so odd at times and particularly on players who have come through the youth, you either have to criticize them because they dont look up to it or make the standard sarcastic comment about how youth players are looked on favourably because they have come through the ranks.

I doubt people looked at Matic as a youth player and thought he was outstanding. Some players just need to be effective at the simple things, especially in a deep lying position.

There were times last night when he also looked for a defence splitting pass from deep. The confidence to play those sort of balls will only grow the more he plays.

Give it a rest, Maradona. There are times when sarcasm is the only legitimate response. I don't think it's unreasonable to expect patience and General goodwill towards one of our own young lads in the infancy of his senior career.
