Ruud van Nistelrooy | Interim Manager

The idiot in me thought I was hearing booing at the full time whistle, then the rarely rational part of me remembered that Ruud was managing this game and it was his "chant" ringing around the stadium tonight.

Great job in getting the team playing more freely and actually putting on a good show. Not going to buy into this being a long term option at all, but it's great to have a legend get the privilege of being called a Manchester United manager, however short it will be.

I remember being so confused about this for a while when he was a player - couldn't understand why he was being booed after scoring

I'd be amazed if he stayed on with the new set up as the potential new manager has a full set of coaches he'd want to bring with him. Such a shame because believe he loves the club and he could be the answer.

We just can't wait around to find out and we also have had a similar situation in the past so we just wouldn't take that risk again.

If he does leave I hope he gets a good job and maybe one day comes back to take up the role.

Can nobody organise a defence or what? Players all over the place again defensively. But at least we scored 5 goals so all is good. Won’t get away with it against Chelsea

We might get away with it. Chelsea are fairly bobbins.

After Ole I never want a United legend to manage the club, the crap I read online about him really was hard to take from my fellow United fans.
Did very well with his set up and certainly got the players to step up and perform. He did look like he belonged there on the touch line

Pretty much what Carrick and Giggs did.

It's grand for a game or 2, but you need to have a long term plan in place for a proper manager.

He was my favourite player growing up, I remember watching him on Eurosport’s weekly European highlights shows smashing them in for PSV praying we’d be interested in signing him, then hearing we’d got him , followed by failing the medical, breaking down in training on his return to PSV , I was totally gutted , loved his time when he eventually arrived, that was special seeing him on the sidelines tonight , love the man

It's a slightly awkward situation now, because Amorim may not have the slightest interest in working with Ruud, but he'll be aware of Ruud's standing within the club and with the fans and may feel some sort of emotional obligation to keep him on!

We can't be sentimental about it, we need to fully back whatever Amorim wants to do and if that means jettisoning Ruud, so be it.

I hope he stays, but if he doesn't, it was nice seeing him back at the club.

His United jersey was the 1st United kit I ever had.

We backed fecking Moyes when he wanted to bin the staff that would have helped him transition and bring in the likes of Round. I’m sure sentiment won’t play a part here as well.

I'd be surprised if he doesn't stay in some capacity tbh.

He must of known ETH wasn't going to last the season when he took the job.

I'd think they'll give him the option, since he was (if I remember correctly) an INEOS hire more than ETH wanting him. I'd be surprised if he stayed.
He’ll stay as interim get 4 games, then maybe be part of a handover team, and o have a feeling he might get the Nice Job due to his super professional conduct if he wants it of course?

Maybe Sporting might fancy him as their next coach?

If Amorim is the right character he won’t let that affect him and will make it clear to the board

I wondered when the last time was that we scored 5 against a Premier League team in any competition - had to go back over 3 years, August 2021 against Leeds.

I feel the same way, Ruud is a football man, there is no way he thought Erik would last his entire contractual term the way things were shaping up.

He had to have been okay with whatever happens to Erik when taking the job as he probably wants to be a part (in any capacity) of helping take the club back to where it should be.

Now hear me out, seeing as no manger has been successful here over a long period, how about we just cycle in and out ex United players who have their coaching badges for 4 games at a time? Ruud gets 4 games, Keane next, Rooney after that etc

And Gary Neville?

Love this man.

One thing I noticed was that every player that came off or was coming on he stopped them to give them an encouraging word. Amad had a smile on his face when Ruud was speaking to him before he came on.

I hope the club don’t force Ruud upon Amorim, any new manager should be given a clean slate in the coaching set. Absolutely brilliant if Amorim sees Ruud as a part of his staff but it must be on his terms.

Even if he leaves I think we will see him back in some capacity in the future. He looked the part on the touchline, loved his goal celebrations and whipping up the crowd beforehand.

Somebody thought the same in the matchday thread.
