Russian invasion of Ukraine | Fewer tweets, more discussion

"Hypersonic" is just a hype word to be honest. Even the German V2 in WW2 almost got to that speed already.

Its more than just a word. They are very difficult to stop since air defense systems can't manufacture anything to repel them. So unless it slows down to reach a target where a specific air defense system is deployed, it will hit its target with incredible ferocity, and potentially armed with a nuclear warhead.

True, thankfully it looks like the recent hypersonic tests by the US have been successful and contain technology that is more advanced relative to what the Russians have shown and even the Chinese especially with regards to this new type of "scramjet" engine that DARPA is working on. So hopefully in one to two years, the US will have taken the lead on this front.

Taking the lead on that front doesn’t mean the ones possessed by our enemies can be stopped though.

Just read about the ukranians being forcibly deported to russia, grim read, hopefully someone' keeping track of this and they can be found when the war is over. I knew it was happening but had no idea of the numbers.

I've always believed in MAD... :nervous:
Hypersonic missiles don’t have to be equipped with a nuclear warhead. They can carry conventional warheads, or honestly, no warhead at all… I mean, we’re talking about a 10,000 lb object flying at 3500mph here. It’s kinetic energy alone would level things.

I think you need a lot more speed or a lot bigger object for the kinetic energy to really be a problem, right? You don't make something go 3500mph and then not put anything on it, I think.

I read somewhere that the HGVs that Russia and China have in service have to be deployed in ICBM or MRBMs in the first phase of flight, which means that in wartime situations they likely would be treated as nukes anyways as there would be no way to tell the difference. The hypersonic cruise missiles that the US seems to be in the lead on right now do not need an ICBM by contrast.

I’m not saying you don’t put a warhead on it, I’m just saying 10,000lbs at 3500mph would feck a lot of shit up all on its own.

MAD applies regardless of hypersonic missiles, not least because no amount of these is going to hit even one of the nuclear-launch-capable submarines when it can't find them.

Whether true or not (and some people in the thread vouch for the guy), it's an interesting read:

Gosh I actually think this is legitimate based on who's vouching for him. The guy who is vouching for him is confirmed to be sending drones and other equipment to verified soldiers like James Vasquez (@jmvasquez1974). Also some prominent people are following this account, in contrast to what I've seen with some other fake accounts.

Actually unreal how Russia's invasion has emboldened its neighbours against it. Literally the exact opposite of what was supposed to happen.

They were doing a good job behind the scenes before the war, causing havoc internally. Without the war, maybe Le Pen would've given Macron more of a run for his money, have Trump pushed again in couple of years time, Nord stream 2 would've tightened the screw around german balls. Fruits of Putins 20+ year reign are being undone in a matter of months, perhaps, he was always going for this endgame, and now just felt with himself getting on, his time to seize glory was running out, and he didn't want the next guy taking all the credit.

I don't know how this will end but as of now, Putin is having a disasterclass.

The entire mythos of a "powerful Russian military" has been completely wiped away. The only thing they have left is nukes and if they use them, there's not going to be a Russia anymore. Putin's regime only remains viable because of nukes and all the invasion did was reaffirm that they truly are the backwater of Europe.

Russia's influence over non-Nato states ceased the minute the tank that is now scrap metal crossed the border. A weak, wounded angry man that has deluded his population into madness and clings to power by hovering his finger over a big red button.

Yeah, there’s a net of volunteers that are helping them at the moment, including helping them move towards Europe or settle in in Russia (surprisingly, some prefer to do it, especially if they have relatives somewhere, although it’s obviously a minority by far).

The scariest thing is the “filtration” that happens when they cross the border the first time — because we don’t really know what happens with those who fail it. Some were found in Russian prisons, I believe, but there are certainly Nazi vibes about that whole procedure and I’d fear for the worst.
