Manchester United tipped off about De Rossi's availability

By Ian Herbert, Northern Football Correspondent

Wednesday, 23 March 2011

The representatives of Roma's gifted central midfielder Daniele de Rossi are understood to have made Manchester United aware of his availability next season, as he contemplates removing his family from the city where his father-in-law was murdered and he is now understood to be the victim of a blackmail campaign.

De Rossi has a year to run on his £60,000-a-week contract at Roma but though he is the vice captain of the side and plays in the city where he was born and bred, there is an increasing sense that one of the more established talents in Italy will be at the centre of one of the most intriguing transfer stories of the summer.

Though reports from Spain yesterday suggested that Real Madrid may have an interest in a £20m-rated player, the approach to United lends credence to the view that he favours a radical change of scene after the events of the past two years.

Roma would not stand in his way should he decide to leave one year early and uncertainty over both the manager and ownership of Roma may be a deciding factor. At 27, De Rossi does not fit the United age profile for acquisitions, though he is one of the continent's leading midfield talents.

De Rossi's family was devastated by the events of 11 August 2008 in which Massimo Pisnoli, 48, father of De Rossi's then wife Tamara, was killed by two bullets delivered from a hunting gun, near the car park of a railway station in Aprilia, not far from Rome. Mr Pisnoli's body was found a few days later but the story has since become more complex and De Rossi has been drawn into it.

Two men, aged 48 and 40, were arrested and confessed to the killing, apparently a revenge over the carve-up of money stolen during a bank robbery where Pisnoli and the two killers had taken part. Pisnoli had a criminal record for robbery and theft. De Rossi and his wife subsequently separated in 2009.

Only a narrow group of clubs are likely to be within reach of signing De Rossi and though Manchester City are one of them, he is not known to have any particular association with Roberto Mancini. Roma have sacked Claudio Ranieri and replaced him temporarily by Vincenzo Montella.

Thomas DiBenedetto, leader of an American consortium and a business partner at Liverpool's owners Fenway Sports Group, is hoping to buy off Roma's Sensi family within the next three weeks. The Americans have the same view as Roma's current owners – that De Rossi might understandably want to leave.

Meanwhile, the level of interest paid last year by United's owners on £220m payment-in-kind loans which have since been paid off, has been revealed as £30.2m – taking the Red Football Joint Venture, the Glazer family's parent company that owns United to a £108.9m loss.

Red Football's outgoings also include some one-off costs from setting up the £526m bond scheme last year to replace their bank loans, according to accounts for the year ending 30 June 2010. The previous year the company had recorded £21m profit thanks largely to the £80m sale of Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid.

Lately De Rossi is one the most hated players by the fans, due to his bad performances and his "misunderstanding" off the pitch with Totti and with a part of the squad

He would like to leave, he will go probably to Madrid

What happened between him and Totti? He's the type we could use but his age and baggage make him an unlikely buy.

I know United have put some sort of loose embargo on players over the age of 25, but I seriously doubt they would pass up the chance to get someone they thought was a suitable addition for policy or ethics; they said this two years ago and almost immediately went and signed an almost twenty-nine year old Michael Owen straight after, admittedly on a free transfer but this shows Fergie won't be dissuaded from making any signings he actually wants.

A few years ago yes, but he's a bit old now compared to how much he will cost us.

I don't understand all this talk about him being too old, he's twenty seven years old, he's not old one bit, you'd get six or seven years out of him!
I'm not saying I want De Rossi at United, I'm talking about players of his age in general, a 27 year old is reaching his peak, he is on the ascendancy, not descent, of his career!

No saying I wouldn't have him, I'm just saying not for the price that we're going to be asked to pay.

Twenty million for a vastly experienced 27 year old World Cup Winner who would add much needed stability, energy and bite to the midfield is pretty reasonable if you ask me, especially if you consider the amount of money similarly aged and known footballers have been moving for around Europe in recent seasons; Villa, Berbatov, Ibrahimovic etc.
Still, I'd agree he'll probably go to Madrid if anywhere...

We've been linked with him a couple of times now. I think it's realistic and if the player wants to come here, United would pay the money. He would be a good fit.

Couple hundred maybe. We're linked with him every 2-3 months and have been since he turned 4. So I have serious doubts about this.

Both the Telegraph and the Independent are reporting the same story, and since they're two of the most respected newspapers. I think there's some sort of truth in this story.

Don't think he would go for twenty million either, he has left only one year on his contract.

Even better if so...

Overrated and physically dominated by Fletcher every time they've played.

My impression is that there are a lot of Roma players that dislike Totti but his are afraid of speaking their mind because they know Totti is god for Roma fans. And if what you re saying is true, (Rossi and Totti are not the best of friends), then Rossi will have to leave because the new owner wont risk iritating the fans by getting rid of Totti

I got hammered for saying that on here 2 years ago.

I didn't and i said he was only as good as Nicky Butt. A physical midfielder who blows hot and cold but never fulfills his promise. I first fell in love Hamsik after watching him annihilate DE Rossi at the tender age of 20.

A few years ago I was a big De Rossi supporter and wanted him playing for us. He would still offer an improvement on our current midfield, but he is a bit older now and the cost could well have gone up.

That said, I cant actually think of that many midfielders I would prefer us to sign.

Rather we signed Charlie Adam. De Rossi is a player we quite literally have no need for. Fletcher is superior.

He would be a good addition no doubt. I've seen plenty of him. Maybe recently he's struggled but he is a very good footballer. A great header of the ball, a good range of passing from either feet. Basically he's Carrick but with fight, heading ability and goal scoring ability, better dribbler too.

No he's not, even in his prime he was an overrated limited thug. The Joey Barton of the Italian league.

He'd want a packet in wages too. He's on a fortune isn't he?

£60,000-a-week according to that article.

Thought it was a lot more than that, him and Totti being Roma's golden boys n all. They've been known to spunk fortunes on over rated players in the past. Terribly run club.

To be honest, everytime I have seen him, which is quite a fair bit, I have never been that impressed.

Saying that, he is certainly better than Carrick. I still don't think he'd be worth it to be honest.

I'll go against the grain and say that he's exactly the type of player we're looking for. Captain material in midfield who will take responsibility when things are going a bit wrong and get aggressive. He's had a dip in his form but that can happen, change of setting could be exactly what he needs.

Quality player that we've crying out for in midfield tbh.

Really? you show you know nothing with that comment. What exactly makes him like Joey Barton?

Fouls players consistently with nasty tackles, constantly blows hot and cold in his performances. Gets dominated by better midfield players constantly, ones that aren't even top tier. Every so often scores a great goal or makes a good pass. Has spats with players and fans. Barton though is not overrated so there is a difference. People seem to act like DeRossi is the Italian version of Keane, a player who is constantly brilliant and dictates play, who inspires those around them. He's nothing of the sort and is about the same level as Nicky Butt, but because he's Italian everyone acts like he's the second coming. He's average and has been fairly average throughout his career. Sully Muntari destroyed him every time they met over the last few years, Sully bloody Muntari.
