Rugby World Cup 2019 aka Squishy McSquish goes into a meltdown thread

Sorry Scotland but I want Japan vs South Africa and Ireland vs New Zealand next weekend.

if they let Scotland play, surely they should also let Italy play too (who also technically still had a chance to progress)?

They should. As Parisse said in a presser yesterday if it was New Zealand needing a win they wouldn’t have cancelled it straight away. Not a dig at NZ they’d have found away for any of the big favourites if they needed a win.

It was pissing down but that can't be an excuse.

Agreed, but from watching other games the humidity and heavy rain is making it difficult for everyone. The number of handling errors shows it's difficult conditions but I expect better to be sure.

... only joking man

As far as I'm concerned my thoughts are with the people of Tokyo I hope that everybody is safe with the coming storm. Sport comes second to peoples lives.

I dont think anyone would disagree with your statements howver I dont think anyone has suggested putting lives at risk to play these games.

If Ireland lose tomorrow finishing on 11 points would Scotland be so insistent that their game goes ahead?

Well, rugby does anyway.

If it was the footie world cup we'd all want it to go ahead, right?
Football World Cup is a summer competition so wouldn't be affected by Typhoons thankfully.
I'd like to watch all the games this weekend and the F1 but I understand that Tokyo is to be battered by the worst storm in decades.

Im sure this game will go ahead. Common sense would say that they wait until the storm passes and play it on Monday if Sunday turns out not to be possible.

Agree. It’s the most sensible decision that could be made. However, it’s already been confirmed that the game won’t get played on Monday. World Rugby want the groups concluded this weekend. That’s why the SRU are rightly so very angry and going down the legal route.

I’m hoping the game does go ahead but just got a very horrible feeling it’s going to be called off. Just need to wait and see what happens.

It opens up a shit storm. The most logical thing to do is wait until Monday. Im sure the Italians are keeping a close eye on the legal process as they also have a claim for that surely. Which is a headache for the Tournament organisers.

Yeah, I don't think anyone disagrees with this at all. What people have an issue with is this was always something that was possible and teams were assured there were "robust contingencies" ready to go in the event it did happen.

Unless the word "robust" now means "zero", the fans and teams affected have a right to feel aggrieved here.

This whole thing is a farce. Why they decided to have a World Cup in japan in typhoon season is astounding.

How ironic it was that Gregor Townsend was mouthing that Ireland's game should be cancelled and given two points but now Scotland are the ones in trouble he is saying the opposite.

Also England and New Zealand are getting massive help with having extra rest. The World Cup is completely compromised. They will play one less game which in rugby terms is absolutely massive. Those two, along with Japan, have seemed to get every dodgy decision from the refs along the way also.

Eddie Jones comparing the “typhoon season” to another country’s “terrorist season” is one of the worst interview remarks I have heard in a while.

I don’t follow rugby outside of events such as this, but is he usually such an inconsiderate bellend?

Yes. That's a new low though I reckon.

This is why I have no sympathy for Scotland.

Yes. The guy is piece of shit and a known troll. Not a likeable man at all.

Yes he is a prick. Grade A bellend

They’ve brought it on themselves. Hosting a World Cup when you know it’s going to be in the middle of a typhoon season without any backup plans is just stupidity beyond belief.

World Rugby couldn’t organise a piss up in a brewery.

The pitch that Ireland and Samoa have to play on is a mess. Just multiple serious injuries waiting to happen. Then Scotland's situation and the fact that England, NZ and France now have a ridiculous advantage in rest time has made this tournament a farce. No blame goes to Japan but to World Rugby. Just like FIFA is to blame for Qatar.

And World Athletics for the farce of the World Championships where no one turned up.

I just assumed all the games were cancelled tomorrow, what’s the reasoning for not just moving it to a different stadium away from the weather?

I saw one person on twitter who claimed to be a logistical expert say there would be huge complications with travel arrangements, medical facilities, visas etc. No idea how accurate that is though.

That’s fair. I don’t really know enough about that to comment. Similar situation to the rain in the cricket World Cup, except they’ve had about a week to find an alternative. Although, given the rules in place, I guess they covered themselves, instead of rushing to sort out an alternative.

I'm not convinced by the argument that NZ, France and England have a huge advantage with the extra week. Sure, they have more time to recover but in England's case the France game would have been really useful to ramp up to the quarter finals. Without it you could argue they will go in relatively unprepared and with no particularly hard games to get ready for the big teams.

Which dodgy decisions? Are you talking about this World Cup?

Let's see how many injuries Ireland get tomorrow and then talk about advantages.

Ireland had France in the last pool game in 2015, in much the same circumstances. POM injured, POC injured, SOB sent off and suspended.

Would have been great if that had have been called off. We probably would have beaten Argentina.

It's a massive, massive advantage.

 This is rugby not gymnastics. They have all avoided potential injuries, suspensions and they already know their most likely opponents giving them an extra week to prepare tactically. For NZ in particular it's huge because if they play at their best they steam through any team left because they're that much better than anyone else, oh and they are also the only team with a true world class squad. As @unchanged_lineup said Ireland likely lost to Argentina last World Cup because of the problems arising from the last pool game against France. If I recall right we had to play a scrum half on the wing or something like that. Simple question would you rather England play France and a week later play NZ or have 2 weeks off to prepare for NZ?

The fact is there is a huge possibility that the World Champions will have played a game less to win the tournament. If England or France win we will always have to wonder at what the result would have been in the pool stages and how that would've changed things.
