Rugby World Cup 2019 aka Squishy McSquish goes into a meltdown thread

Have there been no more developments today? It'll be unforgivable if a team who probably should have been in a SF last time around go out without even playing.

Just makes a huge mockery of the sport and lack of sporting integrity.

Thought FIFA were bad, World Rugby won’t be far off if a nation is eliminated because of the weather!

Hopefully the game does go ahead but I’ve just got a very horrible feeling it’s going to get called off.

Well England will and should be big favourites for that game. England haven’t lost to Australia since Jones took over.
England havnt really been tested yet, been walk over games. They could have done with the France game imo.

We’ll see

It really does. The whole tournament should be called into question, tbh.

And this sentiment of "well, New Zealand would beat Italy anyway. And England would beat France...probably" is lunacy. It's the World Cup ffs.

Joke of a tournament now, imo

Exactly!

It’s been a fantastic tournament so far but this really has marred it.

Let’s say, if Sunday’s game was to affect England, New Zealand, Australia etc being knocked out because of the weather, you can bet your bottom dollar World Rugby will be doing everything they can to ensure the game was to go ahead.

I’ve got nothing against Japan as it is a beautiful country and the people are very nice and friendly over there. However it further begs the question why the f*** did they let Japan host this tournament in the first place, knowing that it is prone to typhoons and other adverse weather conditions during this time of the year? If the tournament was to be held in Japan, surely playing it in the summer would have been the more sensible decision. Or even having back up plans in place, just in case these situations arised which was always going to be very likely during this time of the year.

It’s showed that World Rugby couldn’t organise a p*** up in a brewery. They make FIFA actually look good. They really have f***** up big style and worst of all, it’s on Rugby Unions biggest stage!

Yeah, that's the thing for me. No problem with Japan hosting, but you need contingency plans for when a things like this happen. It's just so obvious and basic to have a backup plan. It's amateurish.

It’s interesting to hear British people moaning about this, within a couple of months of another world cup that saw a bunch of matches called off because of entirely predictable bad weather.

Of course you never heard any England cricket fans pointing out how ludicrous it was for the ICC to allow them to host the 2019 World Cup. Funny that.

No one is saying it is Japan’s fault. I was personally delighted that they got chosen back in 2009 as the host nation. I’ve been to Japan before and it’s a beautiful country and the people over there are very friendly and nice. The blame firmly lies with World Rugby for not having any backup plans if this scenario happened which is very likely during this time of the year. Or even hosting the tournament in the summer?

I don’t know anything at all about cricket and don’t watch the sport, let alone it’s World Cup. Personally don’t like it as find it so damn boring but that’s my opinion. Some folk like it and enjoy it. That’s totally fine by me and I respect that. It’s their choice what they like and dislike just like what it is with mines.

I don’t know if any nations at the cricket World Cup this past summer found themselves in Scotland’s situation that they are going to be potentially eliminated from the World Cup because of the weather. If so, I wouldn’t be surprised if they were angered that they got eliminated because of the weather and it is totally unfair. How can you possibly train for four years, preparing for the biggest tournament of your career and then get told your team's eliminated because of the weather? It’s just pathetic and not only does it make a major mockery of the sport but also shows its lack of sporting integrity. You never know what the future will hold as you may never get this opportunity ever again.

Shame games have been cancelled. They could've just moved them to a different city or a weekday. Shambles really.

England v France and Japan v Ireland(although not officially cancelled yet), both potentially classic games where the winners win the group.

Rain is one thing, but it was held at a time of year where it rains the least, this world cup was held in the middle of typhoon season.

That pitch is a disgrace. I'm getting more and more annoyed about the scenarios going on in the WC at the moment. I'll be bitterly disappointed if we get kicked out of the tournament without playing on Sunday. Also, only making a decision over whether game goes ahead or not 4 hours before kick off is ludicrous. Just feels like World Rugby are softening us up for the hammer blow.

They won’t make it past Australia.

And S Africa beating wales is a given I suppose then? If wales get past France

Of course not. Just went by most probable outcome. SA would be favourites against Wales but it would be a tough game to call.

Feck sake

Might as well predict that Henshaw is fecked considering his injury record. I wonder if we'll be going into out second QF in a row with Sexton crocked too.

They better cancel all games supposed to be played in fukuoka, that pitch is dangerous.

Surely they have to do a pitch inspection there. It's easy to imagine ligament injuries with people's feet getting caught in cut-up turf. Not to mention, what's under these sods that are getting lifted? Keith Earls said the pitch is already hard as it is. If loads of the turf is lifted up they'll be running/falling on rock.

If I was a forward I would refuse to have any scrum on that. Not only they are going to spend most of the game resetting scrums but there is a risk of injuries and even worse, penalties.

Australia vs Georgia is not far away. Chuckles (Michael Cheika) said earlier this week that the Wallabies have been working on their tackling technique. I hope they can fix what has been an issue for them in this tournament.

I'm Scottish and don't really care for rugby, but:
i) This is bizarre equivalency based on some sort of strange application of national stereotyping regarding a country which is a union of nations
ii) Are you suggesting Scotland in general as a nation would support conditions which would help England win anything?
iii) ...or for that matter that most people in Scotland were even aware of the cricket World Cup happening never mind any weather call offs
iv) Are weather call offs dictating results not a common occurrence and part of the arcane nature of cricket? In short, there's extensive precedent.

Get out of here!

Australia 10 Georgia 3 at half time. Nic White scored Australia's try, Isi Naisarani sin binned for a dangerous clean out.

Why are you quoting me here and what point do you think you're making. I have no problem with Japan hosting the tournament, and have zero interest in cricket, didn't watch a single second of the World Cup and had no idea about the games that were called off; nor am i English. If any nations were thrown out of the Cricket World Cup due to bad weather then i would feel similarly. But considering i don't watch or care about the sport, it doesn't bother me.

The situation we find ourselves in where Scotland could possibly be knocked out of a World Cup due to a lack of contingency plan is ludicrous. The same goes for the other games that have been called off.

Again, i never said it was ludicrous for Japan to host the tournament at all. So...yeah. Odd equivalency from you.

Yeah i would agree with most of that. It's a very odd comment from him, tbh.

I know it is.

Also I ain’t English either! Lucky I ain’t a staunch SNP supporter or I would have taken his comment not very nicely! :mad:Anyways, that’s a topic for a completely different thread and day.

if they let Scotland play, surely they should also let Italy play too (who also technically still had a chance to progress)?

You'd have to imagine if the game actually goes ahead, Scotland have no shortage of motivation now. They'll feel they have a huge point to prove.

Yeah you would think so. The thing is, this should be a great game, too. Very competitive and i genuinely couldn't pick a winner right now. Easily the most interesting game remaining.

That's it, isn't it? Scotland have shown in the recent past they can pull off the odd fiery performance, even if the team are not world-beaters at the moment. I think they'd be a very good shout to actually pull this off against the odds if they get the chance.

You'd have to wonder how Japan are mentally in this situation too. I'd guess they don't want anyone thinking this has been handed to them on a plate. Very tough for them to manage.

Australia 27 Georgia 8. The set piece was a positive and that's about it. I hope Eddie Jones gives his team complacency pills ahead of the quarter final as that's Australia's only chance I fear.

Yeah, definitely. There's a lot of pride and honour there, of course. I think we can all agree that it's an absolute shambles that should've never gotten to this point.
