Rugby 2017 Discussion

Bledisloe Cup records that will be gone by the end of the game:

Most points in a match = 51 by NZ
Biggest winning margin = 37 by NZ
Most tries in a match = 9 by NZ… because of course it is

South Africa holds the record for most points and greatest winning margin in a Tri Nations/Rugby Championship game: 73-13 vs Argentina in 2013. That record will be gone soon as well.

It's Australia's Durban moment.

There's another record i added which will be gone soon too. Yeah, this is Australia's Durban moment. Next week in Dunedin is a nightmare in the making. At least Australia is doing well at scrum time.

Will this have any impact on Cheika's job?

I'll wait until the Springboks game in three weeks before turning on Cheika. I expect them to lose that game, but i'll be more interested in the manner of the loss should they lose. If they lose heavily, he'll come under some pressure i'm sure.

Stephen Larkham did a decent but not great job with the Brumbies, and is being earmaked as Cheika's successor post the next World Cup. The ARU will be highly reluctant to go down the foreign route again.

The difficulty for Cheika is also cattle related. Hypothetically, you could put any of the first three World Cup winning coaches of this century in charge and i'm not certain much would change given the cattle available. It's not intended as an excuse because tonight was unacceptable but that's the difficulty Rugby has being the fourth choice football code in Australia.

I saw an interview with some of the Aussie players talking about what Cheika had been working on for this game with the players and it all made sense. Given the missing AB players and surrounding team drama I was expecting more from the Wallabies. From what i could work out it seemed execution was the problem and not the game plan.

South Africa vs Argentina is on 4pm UK time for those interested. Best thing for tournament would be for the Boks to keep pace with the AB's ahead of their meeting in Albany on September 16. Argentina has caused them problems in the last few years though and will hope to do so again.

Definitely was a completed tackle, try shouldn't have stood. There was an earlier incident where the ref wrongly called a knock on which ruled out what should have been a valid SA try so it evens out. Boks looking decent but unimaginative in attack. Serfontein and Jesse Kriel have looked quite stodgy in midfield.

Yeah fair enough, that was before I started watching - luck has evened out there.

Watched South Africa vs Argentina this morning. Boks were pretty solid. Their scrum and general discipline were both excellent. Their scrum either won them penalties, put Argentina under pressure or gave them an excellent platform to do what they wanted either through an exit strategy or an opportunity to attack. 6 penalties given away in 80 minutes is a very good effort - 10 or under is pretty good going generally IMO. 20 missed tackles must be a concern for them though. New Zealand won't let them get away with that if that's the amount of tackles they miss the AB's in a months time.

Argentina will need more possession, better scrumming and better discipline if they're to win next week. They've competed well against the Boks in Argentina over the last five years and will surely be better in their own conditions. They beat the Boks in Argentina last year but i'm worried for them. They weren't great vs England in June,i expected more from them as England was without their Lions contingent.

Right Wallabies, it's time to compete. Last week wasn't acceptable, improvement and competing is simply non negotiable.

Folau scored an intercept to be Australia a 5-0 lead, Foley's conversion unsuccessful. 5-0 third minute.
