Would it work out at United for him or is it too big of a step?
I think it depends of the kind of support he would get. I think he's shown he's not afraid of spending big and stick to his guns even if it doesn't start well, like Paulinho, but also he's willing to drop fan favorites if they don't fit in his ideas, like Slimani or sell hyped youngsters that don't exactly fit in his system, like Chermiti. But Sporting's board has had his back, they have trusted him all the way and they have given him time and resources after a bad season last year.

I don't know how toxic things are at united at the moment, but with the right backing and some patience from the fans I really think he would build a great team.

Not sure about how he plays his team's and the identity, on the premise of the Arsenal games in the Europa last season wide players playing inverted and there wasn't midfield overloads but individual players breaking through the middle. It seems from those games that he favours players who progress the ball as opposed to playing the ball into space.

I think De Ziribi offers more of a guarantee if the intention is to play a specific brand of football and invest in the future to build a team around that identity. I think the main indicator should be to hire a manager on the pedigree of their ability to coach players individually, De Zirbi seems to uphold this element and he's credible doing it both at Brighton and his time in Italy first division.

People can say that hiring a coach was also the prerogative with Eth but that wasn't the issue, the problem with Erik was his reluctance to stick with whatever he intended to do so you could almost say he has failed to follow through on the principles by which he was hired in the first place.

What type of football does he play? Our next coach has to be proactive and want to control the ball

I did a bit of reading and he seems to be a very pragmatic coach who employ a 343 with 2 DCM and a low block. So probably not very proactive and possession based.

Feels like a moot point looking at every manager we've had since SAF. Even the most progressive ones wanting to implement modern attacking tactics have been thwarted by the Glazers, lack of dog and last but not least, trash players. Making do means dull sh*t on a stick.

That's what I gathered from just looking at a few highlights also seen out of possession there's 5 at the back at times. He doesn't come across as a proficient coach but more of a balanced manager. There's lots of mentions with him having good relationship with his players due to his communication but this is also an aspect Solskjaer seemingly did well in.

He isn't ready for this kind of move. Look this isn't a post because I don't want United "stealing" him, I just think a club of United stature and in this particular bad phase, should go for a strong and more unanimous name. Amorim has alot of potencial and I do love him as Sporting manager, but he has one league and a couple of cup wins. He needs more experience and specially not being thrown into this clusterfeck situation. Pressure and fans would eat him alive at the first sign of problems.

I really think that United needs a manager who commands respect and with a proven track record. Now is not the time for experiences. United really needs to get Ten Hag substitute, when he eventually goes, absolutely right.

What sort of structure do Sporting have in terms of a DOF, etc?

That's a huge question for me, because if Sporting have a good structure in which the coach is a piece in the cog then he has very little chance of succeeding if we just bring him in and ask him to be the new Ferguson and in charge of anything like we've been doing time and time again in recent years. With ETH as well. It's a huge step from the Dutch/Portuguese league to the Premier league. It's far harder if you got to a club lacking in structure that gives you extra responsibilities compared with your previous job.

My friend, we actually have a solid football structure at the moment that protects the manager even when the results aren't as good, as seen in last year's debacle minus the Spurs and Arsenal results.

Our Director of Football is Hugo Viana a former Sporting and Newcastle United player who has been doing very well in player recruitment. We have been amongst the top European clubs in terms of player sales. Basically he's better than anyone United has.

Amorim gives his approval but player recruitment is done by our football structure with Viana as main piece.

So we have no business trying to ruin his career by bring him here

I do think Amorim will become a top European manager but now is not the time. Managing United is an Herculean task. Until United does a hard reset in the football structure, give time to Radcliffe to do his work, any appointment will be futile. After that United needs his next manager to be a respected, near unanimous, with a proven CV name.

I think a well structured United won't need a manager with a big CV, but it is a mute point right now as that structure is so far away.

He just needs to wave his wand to fix everything.

Do we want a manager that struggles in Europa with Brighton? And a manager that failed to win the Ukrainian league? Isnt he to raw yet? One good season in the premier league and he is good enough to take on the most challenging job in world football?

Who’s going to be the first to moan about why we didn’t get him in & how incompetent INEOS are if he goes to Liverpool, despite turning their nose up at him when he was linked with us?

We should definitely appoint him. He should be high on our list. Hopefully he won’t be another EtH who is out of his depth in a bigger league.

He’s been fantastic for Sporting and is a class act, but he plays 3-4-3. Not a lot of top teams are used to that system and maybe won’t give him enough time to cook.

I’m rooting for him anyways. Football should have a little more variety to it

Who's going to be the first one to admit they were wrong if he turns out to be another Nuno/Bruno Lage or at best another Villas-Boas/Roberto Martínez?

Looks set to win the league. I hope we get him instead of Liverpool

Liverpool meeting his agent today according to the Mail

Don't want to be Chicken Little here but I think its a huge sliding doors moment to let this guy go somewhere else without going all out to get him.
This. The fact that Liverpool are linked to him and we’re linked to fecking Southgate fills me with dread.

This one example sums up where the two clubs are at. Liverpool chase Alonso then Amorim and we are linked with people like Southgate and Potter.

I rate Amorim but you really just never know. He has done great work at Sporting but he has also had excellent players to work with...arguably a better talent pool than Porto or Benfica over the last four years in aggregate. Of course he should get a lot of credit for helping develop and improve those players. Sporting to Liverpool is also a massive jump in terms of the size of club, the expectations, the types of players and agents you need to deal with, the different kinds of responsibilities you have to manage. And that jump is all the harder when you are following somebody like Klopp, one of the top 2-3 managers of the last 15 years in world football. You're almost certain to come up short in that inevitable comparison.

IMO, he would be a very smart hire but there is still a pretty high likelihood of him failing.

Exciting hire by Liverpool potentially but following Klopp is a massive ask. Still he’s one of the managers I’d have been excited for us to get.

Gutted. Seems we'll get Potter or Southgate if ETH goes

Hope he fails there but seems like best possible candidate out of those available atm? Wonder who Barca, Bayern and Chelsea (if they sack Poch) go for. Looks more and more likely to me that we're keeping ten Hag.

Interesting manager but not a given that he’s a success at Liverpool. Big shoes to fill and a lot more pressure than in Portugal. Like him though.

When was the last time a manager jumped from a lesser league into success at a big club in a big league?

Not having a go by the way, just genuinely curious.

Depends what you consider success, I guess? Are trophies needed or are vibes enough?

If you accept the Bundesliga as a big league and Leverkusen as a big club then Alonso is the obvious standout answer at the moment, as he came from Real Sociedad B. But I get if anybody doesn't accept him because Leverkusen - while being a reliable top 6 club in Germany - definitely isn't one of the absolute biggest clubs around

Last year, Ange to Tottenham.
