Royston Drenthe

From what i have seen of Royston Drenthe, looks like Davis and is built like Seedorf. I think we shouldnt be too mad about this guy, only really come to lights in the last few games, which is a under 21 competition in his home country.

He was definitely the best player in the Dutch side that won the tournament... I say let him ripe in the Dutch league for another year and if he continues his development we should definitely snap him up..

He looked a good prospect at one point - Then he went to Real Madrid. Now he's going to Liverpool. This is possibly the worst combination for player development you'll find.

Could, and I stress could, be a great signing. He was very promising a few years ago but lost his way hugely at Real, but that's Real for you. If Hodgson can bring out his best (and sort out his off-field problems) he could give Liverpool some great width.

So they will basically go from having Riera and Kuyt on the wings to having Drenthe and Cole, can't say it's bad for them - having a manager who actually has a clue and not one that can't judge a player at all is certainly a good thing.

I'd assume he'd be signed to play LB rather than LW, though he could play both of course which is always handy. But it'd give them some dangerous attacking full-backs in Johnson on the right and Drenthe on the left.

On the plus side, a Drenthe/Johnson combo will be a wet dream to any side with a decent set of wingers (i.e. us)

Actually, just checked the supposed facebook page that started all of this, and:

a) The Liverpool post was made on the 15th of July
b) It's pretty obviously not an official Drenthe page

If there was any truth in this I'd have expected to have heard more rumours, and Tribal doesn't count. So I'm calling bullshit on the whole thing.

Yeah, I haven't heard anything about this at all, either.

If anything, I have heard murmurs about Bridge joining Liverpool.

Could be developed into a world beater, Drenthe. But it seems his progress has stalled over at Madrid. (when will they learn :wenger:)

Yeah, Bridge and Figueroa seem to be the front-runners.

Not sure what I make of Figueroa, by all accounts he had a good season for Wigan but he was absolutely awful against us to the point a schoolboy could have done better.

Big plus because Drenthe's even worse at defending than Johnson!

Makes sense versatility-wise though, they need the numbers and he's played anywhere on the left and through the middle a couple of times.

Had one great U21 tournament, but then so did Maceo Rigters in the same team and he's flopped to a ridiculous extent in England.

Woy. Why must you sign Dwenthe and othew good playews. Please sign Bwidge instead.:(

Drenthe's ok as a winger, he doesn't look too clever as a left back. Handy player to pick up though for the kind of price they might be paying.

Adding another to that list, Marcell Jansen's (German LW/LB) agent has just said Liverpool want him.

Great, another very good player on their list. Can we have Benitez with his Dossenas and Rieras back?

he could become a good player relly didnt progress much at real

He is 22 so he has a chance to improve. Unlike the likes of Dossena and other gimps that Rafa signed. Roy is doing a competent job so far which is annoying.

Liverpool needs time to re-group. Roy Hodgson needs to do more than a competent job to get back into the Champions League, because Tottenham and Manchester City means business.

Marcelo is crap, Drenthe has not seemed to been able to challenge him for the spot, that does not seem to impressive. He might be a better winger than a back though. His time in Real Madrid has probably slowed his progress down, and even though he is a decent talent, I doubt he will ever get to where he could get.

He is 22 FFS, how on earth can you spout something like that??

No he is not, he is 23 not that that makes a difference. However he has been at a stand still for 3 years now, where he should have acquired vital experience - and that is not healthy for anyones development. And Real Madrids left back is nothing more than decent with a capital D. I don't know if he is most talented as a winger or a wingback, but many wingers actually see their best days before 25, as speed and technique almost are their most important traits, rather than experience. He probably can become a good player, but I doubt he ever will become amazing.
