Roy Keane

My error. My mother (God rest her soul) was Irish and she used to make potato cakes, but she never called them biscuits. As I recall, they were made with left-over mash, flour, and some butter. She fried them and served them with eggs and bacon on a Sunday morning. Dad's favourite.
That does sound pretty good actually. My mum is also Irish, but I don’t recall her ever being that great in the kitchen!

Tattie scones are a staple across Scotland and basically the same thing as, although generally thinner than, the Irish equivalent. They are tremendous.

That’ll be it so. I’d forgotten he was ever there. His management career began and ended at Sunderland as far as I can make out. The Ireland thing was just a token role. I love Keane, he’d be great craic to go for a flake of pints with and listen to his mad stories. He would also probably be someone you would avoid getting intentionally angry
Don't want to disappoint but I believe he's tee-total these days. If you were to meet him which is highly unlikely, avoid idolizing him. Not wanting to get him angry.......

Whinging about our players talking to each other whilst we waited for City players to come out for the second half. Yes, Roy - why aren't they all staring at the floor in silence?!

God, imagine having to live in the same house as that bloke. Always finds something to whinge about.

Keane and Neville are doing my head in. Yes, we're shite but we're not losing 1 nil at home to Hartlepool. We're losing 1 nil away to the champions of England and playing reasonably. This is just negativity for negativity sake now.

They have you on their hook, reeling you in. This is how they stay relevant.

That's probably true. I wonder how much it affects the squad though. These are players that the current squad should be looking up to but they're constantly panning the club. I do believe our players should have thick skin to be a United player but it's way too much. I think we need to accept we're a sub-standard team trying to get better and not to constantly have grand expectations and then be gobsmacked and disgusted at how bad we are.

I've avoided listening to them and pretty much every former United player outside of Becks.

City have been fecking crap.

If we had anything about us we'd be winning this.

They have 1 win in 10 and are playing like it yet we've not even thrown a punch

Oh it’s awful. Class of 92/ex pros one of the single worst things for the club the last 10 years or so. Pure pressure that’s unavoidable and their bias is so evident in that they’re so inconsistent.

I guess Neville has a more permanent gig at sky but considering between the two of them Keane was the one who had an unceremonious and bitter exit from united it's funny how it's the former who tries his best to seem ambivalent while Keane is clear on where his support lies.

I can't recall our fans ever booing off the players under Fergie, even after losing to teams we should have been good enough to beat.

A bit of a shame that Keane is so often the go-to pundit from a United perspective when he seems to have very little love for the club.

He was grinning like a Cheshire cat at half time.

I think Keane probably does have a lot of love for the club, but he hates to see it where it is today. Which is why he can be a bit snide and snarky with these comments, because he feels the club and fans deserve better than what the players are giving them. Maybe it also hurts him to look back at what he gave the club and how he was treated and now he's looking at a bunch of player who wouldn't be fit to tie his laces struggle to make a few 5 yards passes.

90% of the time it's just soundbites and throwaway comments from him, that he probably doesn't even realise he's saying.

Agree with all this. He’s clearly fond or a fan of United and if it pisses us off how much we’ve fallen I can only imagine how much it pisses off the players who made United what they were in modern times

I don't remember Fergie's United ever getting booed off after a draw especially against a side like Arsenal. He's talking shite as usual.
The closest I remember fans booing or getting angry back then was in 2005-2006 in a 2-1 home defeat to Blackburn. Lots of chants of 4-4-2 and the perceived negative influence from Carlos Queiroz and a disastrous champions league campaign. Hard times you know...we finished 2nd place  .

They weren’t. I was at a terrible boring 0-0 draw against a relegation threatened Boro. No boos.

I always liked Keane (he’s a spurs fan) and find some of his stuff funny and interesting. But he intentionally goes overboard on some stuff and whether he agrees with everything he says there is an element of playing the role to the gallery.

United haven’t been a serious football club since Ferguson left. By that I mean a team/club in with realistic chance of league or CL. So it’s actually kind of nonsense for fans and former players to hold the team to standards that haven’t been around for over a decade.

I do think it doesn’t help, fans may find it cathartic, but it’s not helping in anyway. We all know things have been a mess and we all know it starts from the top. But managers in particular and the wrong kind of players (Fellaini, Bruno etc) have been unfairly getting the most of the abuse.

Bruno in particular is absolutely astonishing. I’m sorry but it’s completely idiotic to have a go at him in the manner Keane has, I don’t have time for that showman nonsense.

Yeah I remember that well. A lot of fans calling for Fergie to go that day.

I used to think that only middle/working class dads would brag about having 7 jobs when they were 9 years old and walking 20 miles through a blizzard every day. It turns out that top level footballers are not that different

It's obvious he has an agenda against Bruno for whatever reason and Keane has done this sort of thing before. Remember he left Neville, Scholes and Giggs out of the best United team in that Viera documentary because they are close to Fergie. He used to pick on Michael Carrick all the time when he did the CL coverage on ITV because Roy saw Carrick as the player who replaced him and took his #16. Nobody holds grudges like Roy Keane he's just a very bitter man. I think he plays up to the cameras a lot these days too.

I always remember that was the only match I remember that fans seemed to lose some trust in Ferguson. Ended up finishing the last half of that season very well.

I love Keane, to give context of how much I love him, its 50/50 who I love more, Roy Keane or Henrik Larsson. Most on here wouldn't realise but I'd say some of his greatest ever performances were in the qualification campaign for Ireland re the 2002 World Cup. He was 9.5 out of 10 in the really big games, home and away to both Portugal and Holland. He was absolutely immense.

I think he is a brilliant pundit, he talks a simple game but it makes so much sense in his analysis, and he hates bluffers in terms of not giving their all in every game, a bit like his on field performances, he kept it simple but highly effective and demanded blood, sweat and tears every day in terms of application from his team mates.
However, its clear he has anger issues, and on a reasonably often basis, they come to the fore. Certain things trigger him, whilst watching games, a lack of 100% effort being thr primary one, it doesn't matter if u have the ability to produce like Bruno, if u ain't coming off a pitch, particularly whilst playing for a team as big as United who are in bottom half of league, it angers him. He had and has a unique winning mentality. Its probably because he didn't have the natural talent of a Scholes or a David Silva to name but 2. I think those type of players who elevate their game to the levels Keane elevated his game to ( a World Class level ) through relentless work rate / desire. Gattuso and Stefan Effenberg were probably similar.

If u hear Ally McCoists story about Gattuso whilst at Rangers, he was the same. A bit mental in terms of training almost beyond 100% every day.

As I say, that unique mentality served him unbelievably well as a player and he ain't losing that as a pundit. He'll never change.

My hunch is he still loves United but clearly has anger in him re being shafted by SAF.

Yeah, I actually think Keane played better in the Holland and Portugal home games than that Juventus one. He was unbelievable.

Keane the player would have had absolutely no time for Keane the pundit. It's sad watching him sell out to sky
Spot on, mate. fecking Keane. Hypocrite who thinks he was badly done to at United. Christ.,

Works for a company that consistently hang United out to dry. Disgusting mob. A group of them now pacing out 10:yards in the studio to show how hard done Arsenalmwere and how United benefit from refs. Wouldn’t happen to any other team. No mention of the penalty we should have had - it would have been given if it was Liverpool, to add to their weekly tally and never a mention of that. How about simulated falling/diving in the studio after yet another Liverpool penalty or practice time keeping when they are a goal down and 10 minutes added until they score? Just another aspect of the game that is corrupted at every level.

Good posts. I agree with all the points made here.

I just wish he wasn't given such a huge platform to spout this nonsense so often. You'd have thought he'd be a better fit for Talksport with his bitter comments towards United, however Sky and ITV seem happy to keep him on the payroll, presumably because his dry demonour serves as a contrast to the more bubbly pundits sat next to him.

I'm with Keane with many of the stuff he says against Fergie.
I think he was an excellent footballer. I think he also can be very funny as a pundit and he is just who he is.

Talking in general, not about this news about Roy, I think that most of former players becoming pundits tend to do the very same thing they hated pundits did to them when active players, so in such regard, feck them all. There are very few ex players that can sustain a good demeanour, that can stay away from black and white comments, or just being reactive, to actually made some critic avoiding acting like a fan while also leaving their ego aside.

I'm kind of tired of hearing the "in our time" from any former United champ, or any other club Legend and not few times not even having such status.
They seem to also easily forget how they also at times svcked and some of their view on players sound as daft as they come. They have a right to give any opnion, yet they tend to lack a lot of empathy and quite a lot of ego going on.

He’s only saying what most of us think; celebrating a draw at home shows how far we’ve fallen. No drama to see here

There was no celebrating in the stands. Fans were simply applauding the players efforts at full time. I don't understand why that's worth commenting on.
