Roy Keane

Whatever about kicking him, sleeping with his wife was a low move!

If somebody tried to trip you up and they did their ACL in the process would you stand over them abusing them when they are clearly in a lot of pain? I'm sorry but that's utter nonsense. There are 10 to 20 cynical fouls in every single PL game. Whether that's a tug on the shirt, leaving a foot in, a trip, an illegal block etc.

Haaland got what he deserved.

Did Haaland know immediately Keane had done his ACL? I doubt it.

It was a bit more than an attempted trip as well.

When you're in a heated game and somebody deliberately tries to take you down way off the ball it's fairly normal to react. You're not going to pause to consider the guy might have badly hurt himself.

I don't particularly like defending Haaland but the whole thing, first incident and second, was of Keano's own making.

If you read his book as well he says he was in poor condition going into the game, had been drinking a few nights before. It showed, Haaland just outpaced him.

Absolutely love the guy to bits but I disagree with his comment about Schmeichel being overrated. Quite possibly the best keeper ever.

Also kind of disagree with his answer to his favourite team mate being Irwin.
How can you disagree with the Irwin part?

Easily one of the best players to ever play for United and arguably the best captain this club has had other than Robbo.

Roy Keane was a legend. He used to have this hard man image because he was so cold but I can imagine he would get knocked out by most of the footballers he’d come across. He was quite short and skinny.

Nah, he was a very good boxer before he switched his attention full time to football. I'd imagine that those skills stick, he'd have been well able to take care of most.

I'm sure there were a few he played against who wouldn't have had any issues with handling him, but most? Nah.

Pretty sure he could handle himself in an argument with any footballer he encountered. He did a fair bit of amateur boxing when he was younger and according to M Silvestre he would have taken Patrick Viera in a fight. He was slim and athletic, dunno about height, maybe 5' 10" so not short by any stretch.

You don't need to be built like his new best friend Micah Richards to be able to look after yourself.

he was thick set most of his 20s. Later he dropped lots of body fat

I love how every time Keane is being talked about you can guarantee someone will pop up and go ah he was tiny anyone would have beat him up he just played a hard man.

Yet no one ever did

Keane ended his career mate.

wrong, -- Haland stated on his personal website that he had been playing with the injury to his left knee for months and his left leg did not receive a knock in the game. Keane did not cause his long term injury as in fact Keane kicked his right thigh, it was not even enough to keep him out of next game.

The fact that he’s not that big matters. He was a great player with a tremendous will to win, but the ‘hard man’ bit was mostly mouth and show. He picked his battles very carefully. Who’d your money be on in a fight between Keane and a genuine psychopath like Duncan Ferguson?

Size isn't always everything.

Vieira was bigger than Keane yet I doubt it would be instant KO of Keane if they fought.

Duncan Ferguson is a rare breed. You don't fight with a guy like that

" I think Schmeichel was overrated"
Didn't they have a little scuffle? Probably the reason.

There's more to physical toughness than your appearance/height/bulkiness. It's why Lukaku constantly got knocked over the ball when he was here and three defenders find it hard to knock Messi over.

Also, this is football and not MMA. Keane had an incredible mentality and levels of aggression which inspired his team, that was the entire point. Who cares if XXX would have beaten him in a fight on the streets. They aren't thugs, they are competitors in a high octane and global sport, who sometimes let their tempers get the better than them on the pitch and hence into confrontations.

When have you ever seen a player beaten up by another player on a football pitch?

Keane portrayed a hard man image because he was fearless but even the likes of Vieira who were not as aggressive would likely have smoked Keane.

Vieira was not a especially violent guy though. He was primarily a footballer. I’m sure that Keane was well aware of this. Same goes for Schmeichel and other bigger guys that Keane supposedly tangled with, I don’t think he would do it with a genuine nutter that was bigger than him (like Ferguson). There’s a reason that they have weight classes in boxing

I knew Duncan would get mentioned. A guy headbutts a player on a football pitch so he is the toughest person in the world is he ?

They faced each other loads of times I don't recall Keane ever bullied or worried by Duncan.

It's laughable how people get all bent out of shape by Keane because they can't fault his play or his leadership so they content themselves with imaginary scenarios whether other players are beating him up

I find it really annoying that Keane threads always end up being reduced to either a discussion of him apparently ending someone’s career, or him not really being a hard man.

No he wouldn't, he was a boxer too, he backed everything up, best utd player ever imo, Robson, whiteside in 80s, obviously best, Charlton law in 60s, Keane is up there

Vieira was absolutely a violent player on occasion. Highly aggressive always. This is a retrospective rewriting of Vieira. He got 8 red cards in the English league (1 more than Keane as an aside).

Keane also was primarily a footballer and an exceptional one to boot: he wasn't Vinnie Jones ffs.

There’s a difference between an aggressive player and a self-styled ‘hard man’. Do you really think Vieira was the latter? How many times do you remember him punching or head butting an opponent?

He boxed as a kid, he wasn’t Jake La Motta FFS…..

Yup. He was a heck of a footballer whose passing ability is often overlooked.

Offhand? Head butt on Heidur Helgusson (sp) of Watford. Punch? Keane for sure.
I can go build a list if you want.

I can't offhand remember Keane headbutting anyone although it wouldn't surprise me.

And yes, I really think Vieira was the latter. He physically intimidated, fouled, hurt people and often lost his shit.

Edit: He was violent all through his career too.He got sent off for city against Inter for a pretty nasty elbow if memory serves.

It's so reductive and depressing. Especially so when this thread picked up due to a genuinely entertaining 50 questions with Neville.

Vieira looked like he'd shat himself in the tunnel with Keane shouting at him.

The idea he'd "smoke" Keane is laughable.
Agreed. Size is one thing, toughness another. Viera was obviously not willing to take it further with Keane, hence henoicked on Gary
