Rooney - Wants to stay next season

Erm: the club is legally contracted to pay his salary next season. So the option you hypothese is impossible.

if I were him, I'd only leave if United subsidised my salary at any new club next year.

In that case, maybe better to have him in the Background.

We're legally obligated to pay his wages next year even if he is sold to a club in China or America?

That really was an incredible contract Moyes had him sign.

I assume as long as Rooney refuse to sign a contract at another club, we can't sell him?

In that case, we'll be obligated to pay him.

More likely scenario is we sell him and pay some of his salary while he "plays" at his next club.

You'd hope Rooney's pride and reputation as a "street footballer" and someone who just wants to play football means he'll accept he has no future here and leaves.

He's already well down the pecking order and it's only going to get worse after the Summer with more transfers coming in.

He's played top level for 15 years, there's only so much the body can take and he's never looked a natural athlete to me. He'll probably pile the timber on after he retires.

He's a similar age to Cantona when he left, I thought Eric looked shot for parts of his last season.

Yep Eric knew he couldnt keep it up and went out on top.

I'd like to do things to Megan Fox that are most likely illegal in most countries but unfortunately we don't always get what we want and Rooney has shown this season more than any other of the post Fergie years that he simply offers nothing other than experience and name value, thank you for the goals and memories but I'm afraid your time with us is up Wayne.

Depends if his pride is worth 150k a week..

I would be surprised if any club offer him more than 150k a week. So to move, he'll be taking at least 150k a week pay cut.

There's no guarantee he won't be warming the bench after a few weeks at the new club either.

Think the most likely probability is that he leaves and get 150, and we pay the other other 150 until his contract with us runs out

I'd imagine if he goes anywhere other than China or America it's almost certain he'll be on the bench pretty quickly.

He's not really incentived to leave is he? After all, where else would he make the same wages and still be in a respectable league?

Reckon he'll only leave if we top up his new salary to match his existing one.

We might save 150k a week but that's probably optimistic. If he's heading down a level, they won't pay him more than 100? So we'll still be 200 short.

More worried that he feels he's past it too and see no point going to another club.

Hopefully this answer to a press conference question means nothing, but seriously, he needs to take a hint and feck off already.

That and Coleen pressure to stay in UK as they don't seem to be the best exploring expat immigrant type.

If he decides to retire here we have to just put up with it, end of story. The club owe him that legally and they should and will respect his wishes. Why should he take less elsewhere for the next year? The club will subsidise his wage whatever happens and that's more than fair enough He has given the club a lot of great service down through the years, he's been mostly terrible for ages though(especially compared with the other important players in the league) and that contract was and is an abomination. Mad Money being thrown at problems and what was actually going on out on the pitch then not really syncing up. That's the most worrying thing about the way club has been going post Fergie anyway, a lack of clear direction. Money alone doesn't guarentee success. We have to give some manager a chance to shape the team properly and this removing and replacing Rooney is a huge part of that.

Rooney was clearly already in decline when he signed that contract and everyone could see we'd need better very soon if we were going to get back to the top. Moyes was an absolute moron for far too many reasons to get into here. I think him being captain and undroppable and playing terribly and getting paid huge amounts for not much is kind of symbolic of where the club has been the last few years. The team obviously needs to find new leaders and form a far more productive attack if they are to move on from these last few largely mediocre seasons. I can't wait to see our team next year! Are there really players out there who we can get in who will have us on the edge of our seats and guarentee us a genuine title challenge in their first season here?! I don't have a clue how transfers are going work out anymore after all our expensive duds! I genuinely don't know what the plan is. Pogba is a step in the right direction though. His being here is a great impetus for other good young players to sign for us too. Rooney is the past already.

This contract is truly Moyes legacy at United. Everytime you think about the contract our once great captain is on, you remember general Moyes thinking that it was a good idea.

It reminds me of the situation that Madrid had with Raúl, Guti or Casillas (for who we still pay).
If the club is sure that his presence does not contribute at all, then it would be sensible to pay him the rest of the contract

Some posts here, so much saltiness

As if Rooney killed your dog and took a dump on your front porch.

"Rooney are you going to stay with United next season?"
("My great agent has been talking to some other clubs. But none of them actually willing to pay my awesome salary. Only United dumb enough to pay me so much money"......)
"Yeah. I'm staying. I love United. I'm red forever"

I remember when Rooney signed his new contract and everyone here was so fecking happy and I was sitting here baffled by the stupidity of not taking that Chelsea deal when it was offered. Now everyone understands why Rooney should have been sold when we had the chance.

Not everyone. I wanted us to take that money and run.

Understandable that Moyes didn't do it though. Guy was just too timid to make a big decision like that, even after all the groundwork Fergie had done. He's stubborn as well. If only Fergie had stayed on for just one more season...

He did worse than that. He convinced LVG he was going to be a fantastic striker, so the club sold Chicharito, RVP, Nani and got rid of Falcao and DiMaria. He then proceeded to play all year for us last year, at a level worse than a dog dumping my front porch, and we missed out again on Champions League. We have gotten rid of so many great players and kept a declining Rooney in the hope he would come good. Now the emperor has no clothes and it's difficult to hide.

Fergie should have flogged him before announcing the successor.

Yup. Stretford told him what to say. He was pictured earlier in the day wasn't he

Agreed. Don't you think Stretford has also been advising not to thow his toys out of the pram, and to remind the media he has been well behaved?

Rooney and Stretford are on to something, aren't they? Why else was Rooney even doing the conference if he is not expected to play vs Celta?

What are our options with Rooney?

1- he leaves for a Chinese club for £25-30m. In this case we save more than £25m in salaries plus £25-30m as transfer fees. The club gains circa £50m in total! Best case scenario!
But it's unlikey to happen, because his wife Coleen and children seem too settled in Manchester/Mersey side to relocate to China.

2- he joins an MLS club. His family might find California (LA Galaxy) more appealing than China, but MLS clubs sign only out-of-contract players from Europe, and they can't match his current wages. It's not going to happen.

3- he joins Everton. But Everton would sign him only if he was released by the club (for free). And like MLS sides, Everton won't be able to pay him more than £120-150k a week. The club will have to pay up his contract. That's £10-15m in salaries!

4- he stays, scores a couple of goals against Stevenage and Yeovil Twon in League Cup, plays a few minutes in the league and CL (hopefully we'll be in CL), and still manages to cash in his £250k a week salary! That's +£25m millions in salaries!

Barring option 1 (a China move), Rooney will be a £10-25m liability. We're stuck with him:(

Where is all this talk about China coming from? Sauce? I don't see Rooney being willing to move to China. I don't think it'll be easy to move him anywhere tbh, he's not going to get nearly as much money wherever he goes and he's settled here.

Reporter "Do you want to play more football"
Rooney "Definitely"
Reporter "Here?"
Rooney "Of course"

When you put it back into context then there's nothing new here.

He wants to play regularly here next season, but when he gets told he wont be playing regularly here next season, he will want to leave.

If he does stay, and if Mourinho starts to play him, then we will fair no better in the league than this season. None of our rivals are carrying an overweight, unfit, touch of an elephant forward player in their line ups, so why should we?

On a serious note if he doesnt leave this season and we are poor again next season in the league the tide will turn against Mourinho

We have ungrateful fans on here.

If he stays he will hardly play. Also who cares about his wages . It's not your money. United is the richest club in the world so his wages mean nothing in the grand scheme.

He's come back early from numerous injuries and played his ass off for so many years. If he wants to stay knowing he won't play ahead of some one better, let him stay.
We are not a sentimentality retirement club.

We are a football club.

The great thing is that Woodward has shown that he does not so sentimental decisions.

Moyes, Rio and Giggs.

It's over for him here.

Has Ronaldo's ' only God knows' been patented like 'let's get ready to rumble'?

Why didnt Ol Wayne use it?

I wasnt really at the CAF when Moyes granted Rooney the new contract but were people pessimistic about that back then already? I was fairly happy, losing SAF and Rooney would be immensely bad and if he could regain form at Chelsea, they could have been a great force. He wasnt half as bad as he is now either.
