So a few weeks in, and the relationship seems to be going really well.

Van Gaal gives his thoughts on Rooney:

He was always a man who is a winner . . . He deserved (to be player of the tournament) because he scored a lot of goals and gave a lot of assists. The goal was very important for him. It was a wonderful goal when you see the attack and what he did to push the ball under the legs of the opponent but also in the corner of the goal.

Rooney gives his thoughts on Van Gaal:

It's been a good few weeks, we've got a new manager who wants us to play a different style of football . . . He's a tough manager but he's been great since he came in. He's given us all a different way of looking at football, which we haven't had before. It's been great for us and hopefully that will continue.

Of course its going well it always was, its only the haters that hoped otherwise.

Only the haters logical thinking was let's rely on RVP upfront when he's not available. Unlike Liverpool we are going into the new season with a lot of attacking potent in mata Rooney RVP welbeck, especially VG has found a system to play them all

It's good that he has a manager who's able to push him and keep him on his toes. Fergie could do that as well in the beginning, but then they fell out. Long may it continue

It's worked out well for Wayne that RVP missed this tour as it gave Wayne and LVG to establish a rapport.

Providing his return doesn't throw a spanner in the works, the prospect of RVP slotting into this team is pretty exciting. Having a tactically astute manager who's decided to play all of Mata, Rooney and RVP - in their best positions - is such a plus for United.

I agree with that. I don't think it'll throw a spanner in the works, but it's good that LVG will happily drop someone who isn't on form, so will hopefully push him further.

I hope the partnership of Roo and RVP becomes more fruitful.

I'm in the camp of people who are annoyed at Rooney for the way he's treated the club.

However, on sheer ability he's undisputedly a brilliant player, and if he goes ahead and bangs in 25+ goals this year then that'll be just perfect.

I honestly had no doubts that Van Gaal would love Rooney. Rooney is going to have a beast of a season, I'm sure of it. I think RvP will be very good, but I feel Mata and Rooney are going to steal the show.

Nor I.

In fact, what manager wouldn't love Rooney? The reason he fell out with SAF was over the contract claims, not him as a player on the pitch. Whenever a manager talks about our stand-out player, they always say Rooney. He's hard working, skillful and versatile, and a great player to boot. It's absolutely hilarious that people thought he might be doomed here once van Gaal arrived, despite the fact that van Gaal has, in the past, always taken a shine to players like him.

You talk the truth, Big Cina Dawg.

God I'm looking forward to September 16th. Ms. RiD away for the weekend so it'll be beers, a few French bastards and a full day of Premier League.

Yup.

It was also always likely that Rooney would take to Van Gaal.

For all the stereotypes about him being a thick, fat scouser, his versatility and obvious tactical intelligence on the pitch means Rooney was always going to respond well to a manager who has new and innovative ideas about what he expects from him on the pitch.

Yeah I agree. I think his 'stupidity' is a myth more than anything else, anyway. I doubt he's Einstein, but I don't think he's stupid at all. And as far as football is concerned, you're right, he must enjoy the training sessions and the tactical part so much. I think despite Moyes giving him a free ride last year, he was more than likely bored to death by our football and it wasn't a surprise really he got worse as the season wore on. A lot of players are going to be reinvigorated and I've no doubt Van Gaal will keep everyone performing and on their toes.
Tuesday's a weird day to do that, tbh.
 I'm so tired, stayed up to watch the game after that alcohol fuelled weekend and was up for work this morning. Getting the day wrong by a month is bad, but it's not half as bad as the shit I've been doing at work. I'm going on strike.

People forget that we were having the same type of discussions last summer. With Moyes and Rooney's history at Everton and because of some of the comments Moyes made over the summer some thought he would fall out of favor under Moyes. But, once Rooney continued to be first choice under Moyes it turned into "Moyes is afraid to drop Rooney". Rooney is an outstanding footballer any manager would find value in him.

The common denominator to all Rooney's behaviour is simply that he likes to be playing well. When he's playing well, he's happy, no matter what position he's playing, under what manager, with what teammates. He only becomes purportedly agitated about those other things when his own form is shit, because he looks for things to blame and ways to try and turn things around.

The captaincy under LVG will be another acid test of this. If Louis can keep Rooney playing well and scoring goals, I guarantee that he won't give a solitary shit about whether or not he's the captain. But if he's playing badly, he'll start to look for reasons, and he'd start to see someone else being captain as a sign that he's not a key player in the team any more, and in his head he'll begin to blame that for his poor form.

I doubt it will happen, though. Football-wise, he and LVG are a match made in heaven.

They were always going to get on well. Rooney is a winner as LVG himself says and will be loving the fresh new training methods as well as a system that has him playing where he wants to.play, back.up by top class players also in their best roles.

I honestly think we could see Wayne play the best football of his life in this system.

And he will not be played out of position, which fergie was guilty of doing time and time again
