Could be the only time he lifts a cup as captain and he insisted on Carrick doing it with him....classy move from Rooney

He deserves it but personally not a fan of testimonials before retirement or leaving the club. He will probably be playing here for another 2-3 years..

FORMER MANAGERS PAY TRIBUTE TO ROONEY

Wayne Rooney has played under four managers in his successful club career and each of them pays tribute to the Manchester United captain in the official programme for tonight's testimonial match...

DAVID MOYES
“When I got the Everton job, I remember someone saying to me that we had a kid who was really good, and I just thought: ‘Yeah, I’ve heard that before.’ But the next month, I went to watch the Youth Cup semi-final against Tottenham and Wayne played. He was outstanding. He scored and I said to him after the game that he would be with the first team the next season, but we actually called him up earlier and made him a substitute at Southampton in April. He was 16 and we had to get him out of school! That kind of talent doesn’t come along often. I was lucky to have joined the club that had Wayne.”

SIR ALEX FERGUSON
“We first tried to get Wayne when he was 14, tried again at 16 and we kept interest in him before finally agreeing to get him in 2004. Although we had to wait to give him his debut as he was injured, I put him straight in against Fenerbahçe and he scored a hat-trick. What can you say? He hadn’t done any preparation, so to start like that was just unbelievable. He was an exciting signing. It was fairly shortly after I’d got rid of the idea of retiring and changed my mind, and I had to rethink about how we were going to take the club forward. When you make the decision to retire, you stop thinking, but once I decided to stay I started thinking again and it was really centred around bringing energy back into the team by looking at young players. Of course there was Cristiano Ronaldo, then there was Wayne Rooney, and it was a fantastic period. The two of them were unbelievable. Wayne came in as a first-team player right away, even though he was only 18, and he’s gone on to play for Manchester United for 12 years, which is very difficult in the present day. I always think that great players can play in any era; Bobby Charlton would have been a great player today and Wayne Rooney would have been a great player back then.”

LOUIS VAN GAAL
“I enjoyed working with Wayne. I started with a blank piece of paper when I went to Manchester United and gave all my players a fresh start. In the first three or four weeks of starting at the club I just observed the players and it was nice for me to see how he acted in the group and how he acted towards me, and what he did with all our exercises. I was very quickly convinced of his personality and that’s why he was easy to work with. I quickly decided he would be my captain, also because of the attitude of his fellow players towards him.”

JOSE MOURINHO
“It will be a very proud night for Wayne and for his family and I have no doubt the fans inside Old Trafford will show him the love and respect that he deserves. Wayne has provided many memorable goals and performances in his time here; I am sure that none of you will forget the Champions League hat-trick he scored on his debut or the stunning overhead kick against Manchester City in 2011. I am sure he will provide many more memorable moments for United in the coming years.”

The quotes above are taken from the Wayne Rooney testimonial programme that will be on sale at Old Trafford tonight (Wednesday), with all proceeds going to four charities of the captain's choice.

Bobby Charlton... How do you not know who United's top goal scorer is? It's been mentioned about 4783 times during the last couple of years whenever Rooney's total goal tally has come up.

I know who our top scorer is. I misread your post and thought the top scorer bit was a reference to what Rooney will achieve at some point. As soon as I see any reference to Ballon D'Or and our best ever player, I always assume we're talking about Best.

Thats what I thought, but got totally confused and thought you were referring to Rooney as a ballon dor winner and top scorer.

Do I need a Facebook account to watch the stream on Rooney's Facebook page?

Basically our version of Raul.

Well, despite playing for San Cristóbal & Atlético, Raul is considered a Real youth product who came through the ranks. Also, Raul, as far as I know, is controversy-free in the eyes of Real fans. I might also remember this all wrong, but I think he was still performing quite well when he moved to Schalke. The only common factor is being the 2nd best goalscorer in the club history.

For me that volley against Newcastle when he was getting really wound up and just looked as if to say have some of that. His records at United will stand the test of time for a long while to come. Deserves it and I for one am looking forward to it.

I loved that. Especially the way the commentator was saying that he might be coming off - it was almost like Rooney could hear him.

Was that the one where he was moaning at the ref and still managed to get onto the ball to volley it? Enjoyed that.

Striker-Won everything-broke records.. That was it.. He came to us at 17/18. He might as well be our youth product.

If Rooney went Schalke right now he'd be a quality signing for them too. He's still got it but just not to the level we are trying to be at again.

Is this game going to be a serious part of pre-season preparation or will it just be a load of shitehawks arsing about for 90 minutes?

Is it not on, you know, normal TV? Do I have to watch it on Facebook ?

Just saw that. But we don't get to see the Community Shield because no one got the rights.

Tv2 better fecking get around to including that in the PL package like previous years. So far they've raised the price, and included the borderline comical Norwegian league in the package to make it seem fair. A worse offer for fans of both leagues, PL viewers has to pay extra for Tippeligaen which they don't want, and people that torture themselves by watching Tippeligaen has to pay extra for the PL.

Raul had all the respect in the world for Real Madrid, we are and have been nothing but a cash cow to Rooney.

Wayne Rooney aint got no love for United?? *Snoop Dogg voice** of course he does regardless of what he earns. Players are allowed to look elsewhere.

Well for me for example Rashford, Giggs, Scholes, Butt, Nevilles, Beckham vs Rooney are totally in different leagues when it comes to being United youth products. Also Raul was banging them in at 30+ years, Rooney’s output has been questionable at best the last few seasons. Whereas Raúl:

2008/09, 31 years - 24 goals, 8 assists
2007/08, 30 years - 23 goals, 8 assists

And they lose TL after this season.
Sent them an email yday and the reply was to basically see what happens. It's both the cups, championship and CS in that package and yet they still have it on the premium sites.
