Stop paying attention to this a while ago
I reckon when we sell rooney, fergie will start to form a new team, starting with buying a star player, because letes face it, although hes been far from our best player this season, rooney is still our talisman.

Im thinking, a midfielder or two, and a striker. And a goalkeeper.

I honestly think that a rooney sale is going to kickstart the spending, and replace our old heads.

We are not going to get a lot of money for Rooney unless we sell him in the January transfer window. Next summer he is not going to be worth a lot and no team will play 75M for a player in his last year of contract. We are in huge trouble especially with his 5M buyout clause. We pretty much got screwed over.

When Rooney goes that's two major star players we have lost in 3 years and yet to replace with one star, I hope so.

If he does leave then I fecking hope we spend big in the next two transfer windows. Potentially that could mean Rooney, VDS, Scholes and Giggs all having left before the start of the next season. They would all need replacing, and at the moment I'd say we would need an experienced and high level replacement for each one of them. In fact, Rooney's replacement is probably the least immediate concern of the four.

Any major spending would be done in the summer and that's regardless of the Rooney situation.

Nani's already replaced Giggs... VDS and Scholes should be the priority. We're well stocked on young strikers and we've seen how highly SAF rates them, he might just decide to stick with them.

I said in another thread we'll know a lot more about what the future holds if and when this sale goes through over the next 6 months, if we continue to whinge and moan about value in the market and that bollox and fail to replace Rooney with anyone remotely capable (and no fergie not Andy Carrol or Hugo Rodallega) then obviously we're fecked, but i think we will and frankly have to go out and spend big and rebuild this side, fact is United being an unsuccessful also-ran doesn't do the Glazers any good which is what many keep forgetting, if the teams fecked so is their business plan, they wont let that happen, they cant let that happen for their own good.

With Giggs/Scholes/Van der Sar/Neville all retiring soon and Rooney wanting offski this is an opportunity to rebuild the side.

Doubt it. Could see him going Madrid with Benzema & some cash coming this way but I don't think he's a good enough a replacement.

Bottom line is that his transfer fee is gonna be a lot less than it would be normally because teams know his contract situation.

I also have a horrible vision of him in a City shirt that I just can't get out of my head. Would we sell to City if they offered way more than the likes of Madrid? I don't think the club is in a position not to really.

You are hoping a lot.

Well I read an article yesterday saying that Rooney was going to go to Madrid with Benzema, Diarra and 20M cash coming our way. Right now I think I will take that deal.

Nani hasn't already replaced Giggs though, they're both still here and doing different jobs. Giggs is one of, what, 3 or 4 genuine first team wingers at the club? When he goes we'll need another winger to step in, whether from inside or outside the club.

I do agree that a replacement for Scholes and VDS are the two highest priorities - with a winger and a striker second. I'd be pretty pleased if we signed one quality centre mid, one goalkeeper, and one versatile winger/forward.

Agreed.

Scholes might be here next year but with Carrick and anderson underperforming, gibson still not up to it and hargreaves crocked, we need players in the middle.

True. But I don't see us having him past the upcoming transfer window. What a shame.

Some lucky bastard is going to get Wayne for a cheap price. We were really counting on another huge transfer fee to help ease our money problems and it looks like that is not going to happen.

Which Diarra? I think I'd bite their hand off for that offer to be honest.

Lassana Diarra of course. Well we are not going to get a lot on money for Rooney like I said before and I think getting two players in positions we need help right now plus 20M is a very good deal.

Agree. To indulge in a bout of transfer muppetry for one second, perhaps we could use the £20m in a bid for Gourcuff also. We all know the French are dependable when the chips are down. Cheap gag I know

Id say we need 2 new top quality central midfield additions first and foremost, one to replace the creativity and class of Scholes (ideally sneijder/Pastore) and one to give us a bit of thrust and spice things up in there (a Diarra/Defour maybe even Rodwell to give it a freshening up)

That has to be the priority our midfield's been a weak link for to long now, then the keeper situation needs addressing, then replacing Rooney, but can we afford to do it all? or more to the point can we do it all sufficiently quality wise, the last thing we need is a bunch of average bits and pieces players doing a bit of this and a bit of that to cover positions, we might as well get a team of O'Sheas if thats the case.

We're skint.

The money will come in, SAF will say it's there to be spent and we'll end up promoting someone from the youth setup and Fergie will claim he is happy with the squad.

Not that we are sure he is going to leave, I just hope he won't move to an English team like City or Chelsea. I could care less if he went to Madrid. There will huge ego problems in his first season there. I will be happy to see how all that pans out.

If the rumour that Rooney's motive for leaving is because no quality is being brought in then I doubt we'll be spending big.

Can see it primarily going towards the debt, with a couple of bargain buys aimed at placating the fans

We'll have to spend this time around. When Ronaldo went we still had this daft idiot, along with Nani, Berbatov.

Its better we go for a player plus cash deal with which ever team we sell.

I can't see a rosy future for the next few seasons after this. Not with our debt.

History has a tendency to repeat itself. Maybe it is our turn to struggle (Re: Liverpool since the 80's)

I think, if we're honest, SAF didn't spend big summer because it would be a waste. Why sign on Giggs, Nev, VDS and Scholes and then spend big bucks on new stars? Try and bed in the younger players with the older stars so they can get an understanding of the club and when those four retire, buy our stars early and have a preseason with them. I think we need a LW and a CM more than we need a FWD. If anything SAF should buy January, it should be a CM.

Personally I think winger should be a higher priority than a central midfielder in january. Fletcher, Anderson, Carrick, Scholes, Giggs, perhaps Hargo can all do a great job central, even O'Shea can do a defensive midfield role. We have two great wingers in Nani and Valencia, both of them might be best on the right.

If Rooney departs in January, whom is just as good if hes leaving because we won't win the league without him and we will get more for him this January than in the summer, we have to replace him with someone... Some exchange with Benzema would not be as hopeless as one might think... Real Madrid/Mourinho might be willing to swap Higuain for him, if so that might the best possible deal.

We are crying out for a left winger.

Not a right winger that can play there if he has to, not a guy with potential, not Giggs (god bless him) who ain't a real winger any more, and will one day before we know it have played his last game for us, but a genuine match-winning, straight-into-the team left winger.

There are always other needs, but that's the first.

We won't be spending much. There's no striker who could replace Rooney at the price we're going to receive for him, and there's no striker of Rooney's calibre that would currently join the side.

I don't expect us to sign any new striker with Hernandez and Bebe already joining the side last Summer, perhaps we'll go after a midfielder but I'm not sure.

Our squad is fine, I think the league will be very even now because Chelsea have been getting worse too and they'll have to deal with replacing some key players soon too, while the likes of Tottenham, Villa and Everton have been getting stronger, I think it'll be extremely close and unfortunately I could see City as a dominant force in the league soon. We're no longer far ahead of the rest and I won't be surprised if we're out of CL someday, maybe not even that far ahead in the future.

The problem with Rooney's departure is that he isn't just a very good player. He is the identity of this club, due to his nationality and work ethics. Right now, i just don't see any good English players which we can form the spine of this team with. I thought the safer options are purchasing British players for their loyalty, but this shows that its no longer the case. *Sigh*

Ozil would have been such a great buy.

I cannot understand how we could bring world class players here now.

I mean we will have to spend more than 150 mil pounds to make this squad into a PL and CL winning one imo.
