Ronaldo tempted by Real deal
Tuesday 2nd July 2002
Ronaldo has declared that he is prepared to listen to offers if Internazionale do not increase his salary to match the success he achieved at the World Cup.
"I owe a lot to Inter, but we will have to talk three ways if Real Madrid decide to make an offer for me," he said.
"If Real Madrid want me they have to call me," Ronaldo told AS. "Roberto Carlos always talks to me about Real."
Ronaldo returned to the World Cup stage in emphatic fashion, scoring both Brazil's goals in the 2-0 final win over Germany and winning the Golden Boot with eight strikes in seven matches during the tournament.
Prior to the World Cup, Ronaldo's agent Alezandre Martins had begun calling for the striker's salary to be increased to bring it into line with that of Christian Vieri, the top earner at the club, and Ronaldo is now hoping that the lure of Madrid may prompt Inter to take action.
Meanwhile, Brazil colleague Roberto Carlos is desperate to get Ronaldo to the Bernabeu.
"I will meet [club] president Florentino Perez and I will try to convince him that Real Madrid have to buy Ronaldo," the defender said.
And Ronaldo's Brazil strike partner Rivaldo is already drooling at the prospect. "A team with him Zidane, Raul, Roberto Carlos and Figo would be something else," said the Barcelona star.
After over two-and-a-half years out with a knee injury that threatened to end his career, Ronaldo returned to the Inter side last season, scoring seven goals in ten Serie A games as the Nerazzurri narrowly missed out on the Scudetto.
Inter president Massimo Moratti hinted before the World Cup that he might be prepared to sell the striker, but he is now keen for the Ronaldo to repay the faith and patience shown towards him during his recovery.
Ronaldo's priorities, however, seem to lie elsewhere. "My future is a victory in the 2004 Olympic Games," he said when asked what he is now aiming for after winning the World Cup.
Moratti was hoping Ronaldo's quest for glory might have been more focused on his club. "Like all Inter fans, I was greatly moved by his success, but now he has a duty to win us the Scudetto," Moratti said on Monday.
Ronaldo is under contract at Inter until 2004 and is on a salary of £3 million a season, but his advisor Martins remains optimistic that Inter will be willing to renegotiate. "It would be a wonderful signal if Inter decided to increase Ronaldo's salary," he said.
Real Madrid president Florentino Perez, meanhwhile, revealed last week that he will not be tempted into a move for Ronaldo because he is still not convinced the Brazilian has fully recovered from his knee injury.
"He is a good player but he has been troubled for four years with injury, and I have doubts about how he will perform in the future," he said. "We haven't talked with him or about him," Perez added.
Many at Inter still blame Brazil for fielding Ronaldo in the World Cup final four years ago, just hours after he had suffered a fit. His career since has been plagued by knee injuries, and the Inter medical staff viewed his success at the World Cup as a personal and professional triumph.
"I'm happy and I feel grateful to all those people who trusted him and worked for him during many difficult months," Internazionale chief medical officer Franco Combi said. "Really I feel as proud as if I was his father.
"Ronnie is a champion and his success in the most important competition worldwide is the result of many months of effort and passion.
"So I say thanks to Ronaldo himself and to the whole of the staff that have worked with him over the last few years."
