Romelu Lukaku vs Alvaro Morata 2017/18

But but.. donkey, one trick pony, limited striker, poacher and all

Lukaku is miles ahead of Morata, his link up play is also underrated, the same with his pace. Just because He's big doesn't mean He isn't technical or fast ffs. Also, He's only 24, He's way from a finished product.

Also a question for those who say "We're ManUnited, We need a better striker". Tell me who do you think, realistically that We can bring in to be our "ManUnited" striker?

Lukaku was literally the best choice we could have made. There is no one better unless we had some chance of signing Lewandowski or Kane.

These two would actually make a "perfect" partner upfront in SAF famous 4-4-2.

Lukaku just gets a lot of stick for no reason. His touch was poor at the start of the season but since then it improved. There was no one better than him on the market last season. When Ibra led the line we saw how he scored almost all our goals. Which is not a good thing. He would also drop into midfield and leave the opposition box empty. Lukaku is a threat running behind and he occupies defenders. Sometimes multiple defenders at once. That's a major reason players like Lingard and Rashford are scoring more (not including Martial because he scores when he wants).

Lukaku is on course for 30 goals in a team that has a RB whose idea of a cross is smashing it into the first man, has no RW, who's LB just cuts inside endlessly and the LW especially Rashford was selfish for the majority of the season. If Lukaku had gone to Chelsea they would be in our position. They have the perfect set up and team for a player like him. Hazard is way too selfless, they play with width and can cross from deep through Azpi or wide from Moses and Alonso. I think next season with at least a proper LB and fingers crossed a RB we will see Lukaku's true potential.

It's clear Conte wanted Lukaku at the start of the season but their haggling over a fee made United, who wanted Morata and were irritated by Madrid's fee, go on and buy Lukaku instead. That left Conte with Morata, who he did not prefer and it can be seen that Morata simply does not fit into Conte's style. Morata does look a lot worse in this season so I don't think you can use this as a barometer to compare with Lukaku, let's a couple of seasons more, maybe the next Cheslea manager may play more to Morata's strengths.

Although, ironically, Morata has a better goals/min ratio than Lukaku in the EPL, along with just 1 less assist in 900 less minutes.

My impression was that Jose wanted Lukaku as his 9 but thought it was a done deal at Chelsea. A gap opened and Ed took advantage end off. Pretty sure Jose stated this at the start of the season when he was saying he was happy with 3 but even more delighted with 4 but you’re correct in Madrid’s haggling bought us more time and probably aligned the transfer to make it happen as we would not have signed both.

Thing is Lukaku has been one of the main reasons as to why we'll (most probably) finish second in the league.

But we only signed 3 players? I'm pretty sure what Mourinho was showing was his frustration and disappointment at not getting Perisic in the transfer window, in a quite sarcastic way.

It's Morata's first season in the PL so I'm willing to cut him some slack on the basis of that, however, I think it's fair to say that on the evidence at our disposal:
  • Lukaku, while still has question marks as an elite striker, has made the transition from consistent and reliable goalscorer at a mid table club to a consistent and reliable goalscorer at a big club. And for that, you need a certain type of mentality which he does have. Now whether he can ever be a top class striker. I don't know. His all round games lack a little but not as much as initially made out it seems.
  • Morata on the other hand was being judged by most on the basis of his 'potential' and whether the last season at Madrid was a true indication of his improvement. So he's never really lead the line for a top team and been their source of goals. It's his all round game that has impressed most and at Madrid he appeared to improve his goalscoring hugely. However so far based on this season, that doesn't appear to be the case. He's still inconsistent Infront of goal and it's still for him to prove that he has what it takes to be main goalscorer for a big club.

No he wanted 4 but Lukaku was obviously done before that and that’s when he informed the press that he heard about Lukaku not being wrapped up by Chelsea.

Since the new year, he's had more yellow cards in the PL than goals. Go on any Chelsea forum and you'll see that he's actually becoming a source of hate for Chelsea fans.

So what? Morata is one of the main reasons why Chelesa will (most probably) finish 5th or 6th.

Checkmate, Lukatists.

Is lukaku a bad striker ? No ofcourse not. Rather I think he is one of our more talented players. But my question is, could he have done better than what he has done ? What is his major skill set ? What is his best asset judging by his current style of play?

I agree we have created less chances than many top teams but chances we have created are very good ones. Lukaku does fails a lot to grasp those chances . He doesn't runs in the channels, he doesn't take the ball clean. Considering he played all our games as striker I would imagine players like martial, Rashford etc would have scored similar.

Hes always in the channels mate

I think it's unfair to judge Morata on this season under a completely unmprovunmo, disillusioned manager. I'll be interested to see what he can do under their next manager. There's a really talented player in there.

I want to argue on that but the sarcasm was so hilarious, I think I am going to agree with you. See how our mood changes when we win games.

Yes he does but it is more comparable with Rooney than lewandowski considering lukaku isn't cheap. But yeah, one thing we can all agree is that he is a good fighter. He has improved. I am sure he will improve further.

I didnt disagree with your overall point by the way. Just that running in the channels is certainly not something he should be criticised for or something anyone should be saying he doesnt do. I actually think he does it too much.

 As deluded as ever.
He is known to hand in transfer requests if he has to fight for his place instead of getting it handed to him.

Yes, Giroud would send shivers down Lukaku's spine.
Well he handed in a transfer request because he didn't fancy fighting against Torres and a semi retired Eto'o for his place, so your probably right.

Talk about rewriting history and making up stories now.

Both are not that great. Lukaku is overrated on here. His figures are average for this season.

He asked for transfer not because he wasn't arsed to fight, because Chelsea as a club showed 0 interest in developing Lukaku. He was young player and wanted out just like how KdB wanted out.

There is nothing wrong to want out when you have done well on loan and then club signs one more old player to play as back up.

In the end, whatever Lukaku did was justified considering how well he has done since moving out.

Now it's a different story, he isn't a youngster and club and coach has shown lot of trust in him.

Chelsea as a club is very poor at giving young players chance in first team.

Think it's difficult to be unhappy with Lukaku. I knew his limitations before he joined United, and they have shown at times this season, but overall he has done well and will get even better next season. He's shown he can be the main man at a big club which is a big question mark for players joining United.

My two main concerns when joining was that his hold up play was terrible and that he was a streaky striker but he has shown improvements in these areas this season. He was on fire at the start of the season, had a dip in Nov/Dec and came through it to be more consistent again, he isn't banging in 3-4 goals a game then not scoring for a few, he's getting 1/2 a game every game or few games which is what we need. At Everton, he would often go 5,6,7 games without scoring before getting a hat-trick which would mask his consistency and efficiency somewhat. In terms of his first touch, a striker in his style is always going to give the ball away, it's very difficult to play with your back to goal constantly in a 1 man strikeforce where you have to be the focal point but he has definitely improved in the last 2-3 seasons.

I would say both players have been letting their teams down this season, for different reasons. It also has to be said that both plays for old-school managers in slow attacking setups, vastly different from what strikers at Man City, Liverpool and Spurs can expect to grab in terms of chances. Morata is new to the league and will show a different side to himself next season I am sure, Lukaku is new to a big club, but his excuses aren't easy to find in my opinion. He plays every game and struggles to make an impact in most of them. Both players have only scored more than one goal in only one game, which is always a sign of a struggling striker. Lukaku is big and strong, slow on the turn and sometimes very predictable. Morata is big but not so strong, he is getting to terms with the physical aspect and will learn a lot from this season - just like every other continental striker coming from a less physical league. Morata is much better at heading and footwork, he is way smarter in his positioning in the box. None of them really produce that something out of nothing-magic that only the best strikers manage to do.

Lukaku has 15 goals and 7 assists in 2789 minutes, which equals a goal point every 127th minute.
Morata has 11 goals and 6 assists in 1876 minutes, which equals a goal point every 110th minute - slightly better than Lukaku

Put Morata in this United-team and I think he would have outscored Lukaku by a few goals this season, but Lukaku in the Chelsea-team and it would have been similar to what Morata has done. All in all, swap these two and we would have been 2nd and Chelsea would be 5th - makes no difference. I like Morata's style and he is a much more modern player, next season I think he's going to go up a few notches based on the fact that he has a full season under his wings. Also depends a lot on which manager is coming in at Chelsea.

Put Kane or Lewandowski in our team and they would have 25 goals in the league and make a huge difference to our points tally, 100% certain.

He came on in three of the first four games of the season (for comparison, Azpilicueta only came on in 1 of those and now look at him) including the super cup final. Eto'o actually came into replace Ba, Demba was heading on loan to Arsenal until Rom's transfer request forced us to cancel it and bring him back. Jose also got fed up of Torres pretty quickly, he would have likely been rotating with Eto'o by Christmas and seen a fair bit of game time.

I'm not disappointed by Lukaku, I think he has had a good season and will be even better next year.

On a personal note, I love big Rom and the passion & fight he has been demonstrating for a wee while now. Keep it up big man :)

Lukaku has had a good season and should continue to improve. It’s not been an easy year for him either, lots of games been feeding on scraps with very little service.

Perhaps. But he did miss a sitter against WBA when it mattered the most, and he did miss another sitter when it really mattered the most - albeit with a good header. There are many, many examples of clear misses - which holds him at 15 league goals instead of 25. We are United in 2nd place, don’t portrait his working environment as some club in 15th unable to create chances. Yes, he scored lots for Everton one season - but he’s at United now, I don’t care what he did at Everton. If he plays next season and enda up at 15-18 league goals we have to get rid.

You think Morata would score more than Lukaku if he was at ManUtd. Just check PL site and see who missed most clear cut chances.

We're second in the league and a big part of that is down to Lukaku and other high quality players we have. Lukaku's number of goals in the league is on par with the way we play.
