I am not a major fan of Lukaku - I've seen him go missing too many times and bested by players like Paddy McNair when we played

I wonder what Lukaku can become with the right focus and motivation though

interesting one - before Griezeman I though no to Lukaku but perhaps the best of the rest

my one issue is what does this mean for Rashford

What does it have to do with Rashford?

Should always have been our number one target IMO. I think he will be an absolute beast of a player over the next few years.

Saying that I think he is nailed on for Chelsea.

Was wondering why we didnt deny it if we werent interested. We have briefed the media before to get stories like that out..

If we have no interest, why not just deny it.. It wont help with the Morata negotiations.. That is nearly done. No one is going to believe we'd back out at the last moment because there is a few million difference in the valuations..

We wont do it for Riola.. Not when the story in the papers will be about a player snubbing us for a rival.

I expect him to go to Chelsea. He has stated he wants to play there in the past. Chelsea want him back. Jose sold him.

I just dont understand what we gain by being linked to this and why we havent denied it already.

If Chelsea are selling Costa then they must be signing a striker, so I'd be very suprised if that wasn't Lukaku

Yeah, I think this is worth keeping in mind. I do think our interest is, and has been, real but if Chelsea did let Costa go and failed to land Lukaku that would leave them firmly up the proverbial creek. I imagine this is a bit of a powerplay from us to stir things up and show our strong financial hand. If it ends up with us signing him that's great, if not then the expected has happened with us shaking/speeding things up.

Rashford is still a kid, playing second fiddle to a top striker is still perfectly normal.

Morata and Lukaku for some 200m€ would be absolute madness. Spending all this money, and still having a worse attack then Arsenal (Lacazette&Alexis)..would be hilarious. With our players a 4-4-2 would be a waste. Much better players in attacking midfield already at our club

Atletico Madrid have done alright too. The idea you can't compete with that formation is utter nonsense.
I agree, but it's more that a lot of people assume a 4-4-2 can operate the same way it used to. Monaco and Atetico's 4-4-2 systems were both as different to the 4-4-2 systems used in the 90's and early 2000's as they were to each other.

It's either him or Morata, but not both. I prefer Morata, I feel with him we're more dynamic and fluid. Both are very expensive but to pay 30m more for Lukaku is just crazy

So with this Rooney rumoured Rooney deal, is this a going concern again? What price would people accept him for?

Exactly. Flat-track bullies can win you leagues

Yep even Suarez last season his goals were generally against bottom half oppo.

I disagree it would be worse than Arsenal. In fact, I'd say we would be stronger up top in terms of options than everyone barring City (Morata, Lukaku, Rashford, Mihki, Martial, Mata)

I'd love to see Lukaku here. I think he's going to be immense for us, especially if he's motivated because he thinks he's competing at the top level again. Rooney going the other way is the cherry on top. There aren't any better proven goalscorers available in this window.

If this happened I'd find it funny more than anything. Jose has a form for this type of stuff. Could leave Chelsea in trouble too.

Sound to me like we're posturing to pressure Madrid for a lower price. If we're that interested we should have been more aggressive until now. Only few days till pre season to start a serious interest in a big money transfer.

Exactly. Sounds like United and Everton are doing each other a favour. Madrid might be pressured to lower their price and Chelsea will be forced to pay their asking price.

3-4-1-2 with Lukaku, moratta and mkhi behind. Valencia and Perisic on the wings with Pogba ander in mid , and 3 defenders with lindelof or bailly flexible enough to step forward and play as a holding mid.

Lukaku will bring in power and will help dominate smaller teams who we lost points to at old trafford. And people who say Lukaku doesnt show up against big teams will be pleasantly surprised, he has all the attributes.

ai ai , we can change formations and i can bet Lukaku will score more than lacazette.

If Lukaku comes Rashford plays less, potentially.

The take-up on here has really slowed down.
Rashford played more games than anyone else last year even with Zlatan here. Mourinho will make sure he gets plenty of games.

I actually have a feeling if we get Lukaku then we're sacrificing Perisic not Morata.
I'm kind of the opposite. While I'm 95% certain that this is just a leak put out there from Everton/Lukaku's camp to speed up Chelsea (and possibly ourselves also to try to get a few million off Morata), in the slim chance we sign both then Perisic might make sense in a 3-5-2 system. I'll be the first to admit I have never watched Perisic play, but from what I've heard about him he might be suitable to play that left wingback/winger role in that system.

But like I said, I'm almost certain the reality is that we'll only be signing one of the strikers, and that will almost certainly be Morata.

We had 4 strikers in Cole,Yorke,Solskjaer,Sheringham and then Rooney,Welbeck,Hernandez,Berbatov

Having Lukaku,Morata,Rashford,Martial is really no bother. We play so many games and some of them will get injured, you HAVE to have backup.

Do you think City care? they're going to have 3/4 world class players on the bench every week.

Cautiously optimistic. I like Lukaku a lot. He has the potential to develop even further and with the right tutelage could become one of his generation's finest number 9's.

However I don't trust Raiola the lard arsed money grabbing troll one bit. He won't care where the player goes he'll only care who's paying the most. We have to be careful we don't end up paying a fee which makes us neglect other areas. I see people saying we should sign him and Morata. Not convinced as I don't know where that leaves Rashford nor what it says to him when preseason rolls around and there's literally 200 million pounds worth of forwards ahead of him (not to mention whichever winger we end up buying).

zero chance of this unless morata had broken down to a crawl. guessing if we got lukaku tho morata would go to Chelsea for 60m or so. Madrid would have no leverage.

hoping this deal gets done quickly to Chelsea so we can close morata and move on to other positions

a 24 year old....

how many games will Rashford get at 9 if we sign Lukaku - he had practically nothing there until Ibra's injury

Its really simple , if someone is good enough they will play no matter what or who is in front them . Rashford has potential but an awful lot to prove . Martial even more so.

We should have just done this last summer.

He'd probably have been £30 million cheaper and we'd now have him fully assimilated with the rest of the squad.

We cant sign both, Do you think chelsea will sit around and not sign anyone when they have said costa to leave who is dying to go back to atletico?

We are not getting both Lukaku and Morata. One comes to United and the other to Chelsea.

Morata is the better striker imo and also likely cheaper. Dont see why we would go for Lukaku unless he can he had for less.

you are assuming we have a manager who will rotate and give Rasford games at 9 - that is where his long term future is

even when Ibra's performance levels plummeted last year he didn't rotate him and played the Swede regardless

Tweet thread on Lukaku

It's a fight between two clubs again. Man United are definitely back in for Romelu Lukaku: Chelsea or Man United?

Man United made an enquiry for Lukaku at the end of May, but felt he already was in advanced talks with Chelsea...

Was asked what changed?

Chelsea still not having reached a deal...

Antonio Conte has been in regular contact with Lukaku in the last few weeks. He wants a deal over the line too. Over to Marina G. #cfc

Yes we can.

They'll probably go for Belotti and Llorente.
