Romelu Lukaku shirt number discussion

Very happy to see Lukaku prefer and ask for the #9 shirt. He really is a proper out-and-out striker.

I cannot understand the encouragement for Martial to reclaim the #9. Yes, it wasn't good the way he lost it, but he isn't really a striker who suits the number anyway. The best way to think about it is, not to look back at the past.
 
Can't believe people are still suggesting Martial as 9. Aside from him not being a striker at the moment, nevermind our best one, and not even slightly deserving of the accolade anyway, he should totally be number 9.
 
9 - Lukaku
10 - Rodriguez
7 - Griezmann (in January or whenever we can)

Does anyone really think James would fit us? It's like people have missed how awkward Real are to deal with for another point.
 
9-Martial
10-James (if he comes)
11-Lukaku (Romario wore it at Barcelona so that would be cool)
 
Why did Rom ask Zlatan's permission to wear the number 9 shirt? It doesn't belong to Ibrahimovic, he is no longer employed by the club FFS!
 
Lukaku will be our starting striker, and 9 is the number for strikers. Honestly, I'm not sure what the discussion is as it's obvious to me. Ibrahimovic should wear 37 if he comes back.

#10 at United has usually been our top goalscorer. Part of the reason we moved Rooney to #10 when we did. Law, Charlton, Ruud, Hughes.
 
He told ESPN FC that he will be taking number 9 because he's a striker and that he asked Zlatan's permission.

I just have to comment on this amazing relationship between Pogba and Lukaku. I'm so awfully happy to hear they are so close to each other. Pogba seem to be one of the best personalities in football today. So relaxed about life. I love it!

Lukaku is obviously a number 9.

Linseedloaf should nab number 4 from Jones.

Martial should keep 11.

Number 7 should be saved for a big name.
 
Well, I know it's not about Lukaku's number, but looks like Andreas Pereira took number 15 and Lindelöf number 2 (as I saw on todays training). That means no shirt number for Januzaj as he's probbably leaving and number 44 possibly for Ivan Perisic is now available. Is it obvious for those two that are changing the clubs?

I belive that also means we aren't going for any full-back, but number 10 and 7 will be free, almost everything up to 20 will be taken. Joel Pereira could take number 13 as back up goalkeeper.

I can't remember Zlatan asking Martial for permission when he took the 9 off him, and Martial was under contract a coming off a season in which he was our best outfield player.
This probably shows that the shirt number means a lot to players and Zlatan acted like a cnut for taking Martial's shirt number (without his permission of course).

My original post should have been written as a question.

Zlatans not a United player but chances are he will probably bump in to him around the place often enough and Lukaku doesn't want things to be awkward/on bad terms between them? They might still end up playing together in fairness. Maybe Lukaku wanted Zlatans blessing himself out of superstition? Who knows what odd quirks players have?

And I don't think it was only Zlatans decision to take Martials number 9, it was obviously approved by the club.
 
Give Martial back the number 9 shirt. Then he might stop sulking and be the player we saw in his first season with us.
