Are people still slagging Lukaku off?

If you look at his highlights reel for United this season, he can actually be brilliant on the ball as much as anything else. I think this seems to have gone unnoticed by a lot of people.

I feel as if he improved quite a lot on the ball over the 2nd half of the season, yeah. His crossing as well.

He has moments where he shows excellent skill and control on the ball but the issue is that he is still too inconsistent as far as use of the ball is concerned. He has improved no doubt but he still has plenty to work on. Also, most of his brilliance on the ball is after he has got it under control. But majority of the time in tight spaces, the ball is stolen off him before he can bring it under his control.

He's turning into a top top striker. I think his game has improved massively in the 12 months he's had at United.

I've loved his attitude this season at United, he's had it tough, lots of criticism, at times very little service, and he's banged in over 30 goals this season for club and country. The best thing is you can just sense he has lots more in him and he has the ability to stretch to 40+ a season.

I'd like to see him trim down a little, for all of his muscle and strength, he actually doesn't use it that much and he likes the ball at his feet to turn and run, or to poach. If he could trim down and speed up he could reach another level.
thats a big ask mate. Salah barely did this in a gung ho team! RVN only did this once with Beckham, Scholes and Co. Harry Kane could not manage this once in an attacking team.

United fans without an agenda will have noticed this already, but there you go.

Good points, but if you take out his dry patch mid-season when he went 10 or so games or whatever without scoring he would have got to the mid-30's. Quite a season he had when you consider we don't play massively attacking football.

I can’t be the only one who doesn’t rate him surely? 16 goals in the premier league for the main Man Utd striker. Are people really happy with that? His hold up play is terrible. But people keep saying he lacks service? The man can’t control the ball. If people are happy with us looking mediocre fine, “he’s great”. But I personally don’t think he will ever been good enough for our club. Sign lewy from Bayern that’s who we need!

I know it's a friendly and against Costa Rica but he had a super game. Looking past his 2 goals and assist, the particular skill at 5:40 is just :drool:
His technical skills, in particular dribbling, is quite underrated I would say.

I am sorry but I wouldn’t call this a super game. Yes, if we were to look at stats alone, 2 goals and 1 assist is great. But the amount of chances and half chances he missed before he got his first goal was a little too much. Unfortunately for him, this current united team does not create enough for him to be a “1 in 3” kind of a striker for us.

2 goals and 1 assist is super game. Also he missed 1 chance where he hit directly to keeper, chance Hazard created, he was offside. KdB's chance the ball bounced to awkward height. It's not easy chance at all.

Btw, chances will be missed, otherwise we will be seeing 100% conversion rates in football. Reality is we see conversion rate of around 30% which says the story.

Less muscle = slower.

Why does this nonsense kick around?

Big Rom! :boring:
Great form recently and has really matured over the last year - looking forward to many more years of him in the United shirt! Hope he has a good WC and comes back stronger than ever (+ hopefully we will sign some players who are able to deliver for him next season!).

Everybody including Ronaldo and Messi miss many chances, or keeper save those. The difference is they consistently get into those positions, which Lukaku did in this game. I don't know what you are complaining about!

Did you just start watching football yesterday?

Here's two players in the top three of most 'big chances' missed from last season:

Mo Salah
Harry Kane

I think he was saying less muscle = faster, not slower.

Yes. That's the nonsense I'm talking about.

Less muscle results in a less explosive and slower player. Not a faster one. Basic physiology.

You can add 5/10/20/30/50 metre metrics but it's not until you hit thousands of metre endurance events that weight becomes a factor.

And for those that say footballers cover 7-11km a game : this is true for Sunday League players too, albeit at a slower pace.

Lukaku is shaped like a perfect centre forward of his type. Like Drogba, Vieri, Shearer, Costa & any other black, white or multicoloured player you can mention.

He's a big boy. For good reason. Being slimmer would make him worse, not better. And certainly
Not faster.

Agree with this. When a player or the team is missing chances (like we were in Jose's first season) it's frustrating but I'd take players at least getting into positions to score every time versus the torture of one snatched half-chance per game.

Depends what you mean by faster, and it depends how much extra muscle you are talking. Adding the right amount of muscle in the right places increases your acceleration and straight line speed, but too much also makes you less agile, which is far more important in football. Lukaku weighs 94kg which is a lot for a footballer. I agree he could benefit from a little less weight as he is hardly the fleetest of foot.

I'm not sure what you mean by saying Sunday league players cover the same ground at a slower pace. Not as long as they play to the same 90 minutes they don't.

More muscle by itself hardly makes a faster one though? It's all a balance making up the ideal body for whatever purpose.

Sprinters aren't bodybuilders.

Rom has completely won me over. I was firmly in the Harry Kane camp last season, especially during his dry spell.

It was actually when I saw him live at Old Trafford I really noticed his overall game play that the cameras don't always pick up. He's workrate on the pitch and training late is a perfect example of a proper professional.

As his manager's comments above point out, his overall play and ability has improved loads since signing.

Cheeky bet for top goal scorer.

Yeah. He's really a top pro. I had asked a friend who's a season ticket holder at Everton and he said he'll score a lot of goals but now he's at a big club and his work ethic or lack thereof will frustrate you. Easily one of our hardest working players and completely selfless. He really put the team ahead of himself and showed real development and improvement to his overall game and not just the goals.

Hopefully he comes into pre-season on the back of a strong World Cup. He'll be class again next season. Can easily see over 30 goals and a number of important assists.

Less muscle = slower.

Why does this nonsense kick around?

Nonsense?

It's actually common sense / basic knowledge in the fitness industry that if you want to be more agile & quicker, you have to strip body weight. He has a massive upper body and could lose some shoulder / chest / back / arm muscle mass and maintain his legs and still lose a stone or two.

Lol, you think Lukaku at 25 is the same build/size/weight as Drogba, Vieri, Shearer and Costa were at 25 years of age?

That my friend is nonsense.

I've played sport and trained in the gym for years, and the stockier with muscle I get on the upper body, the slower I can run. The more I trim down on the upper body, the faster I can run. It's simple.

I've weight trained for about 12 years and I can run much faster now at the age of 30 at 6 ft 3 90kg guy than I could as a much musclier 24 year old at 105kg. This, despite probably losing a yard of pace due to age. Yet I score higher on beep tests. Why? Because there is less muscle mass on my upper body weighing me down.

This is a simple logic that most people know. Yet you're calling it... nonsense?

If Lukaku lost a stone in upper body muscle mass yet maintained his legs, you think he'd... be... slower? Really?

He doesn't use his upper body muscle to win headers or outstrength opponents, he uses a quick turn and a great finish and poacher abilities to score 30 goals a season, so I don't see what harm dropping a stone in muscle mass would ever have on his game other than give him an extra yard of pace.

So you’re slower, but have better endurance? That’s the main effect losing a bit of muscle will have. For pure explosive, straight line speed, Lukaku’s build is fine. Which explains why he’s the quickest player in our squad.

Look at rugby players, some of them are lightning quick, with much bigger chest/arms than Lukakau.
