Rodri | Man City player | Ballon d'Or winner

He really turned it around during autumn/winter last season. Just like Gundogan, Cancelo and Stones. He clearly is a Top5 DM in the world right now but I think overall City players are underrated. Fernandinho, David Silva, Aguero and his unbelievable stats in England, peak Yaya... Some of the best to ever play in England but they never receive enough credit.

Top 5? He doesn't even get in his own national team!

They are regarded as some of the best players to play in the PL...

They never did much in Europe unlike other PL greats.

I have watched Tchouameni since he was mentioned here in the summer. I feel he can become a great DM.
He has broken into the French National team also, and is still only 21.Maybe we should make a move for him in January. What do you think, anyone.?

Kante is a DM and a real DM, he just defends all over the pitch like Gatusso. its short-sighted to think a DM must play like Rice not ever crossing the halfway line
Good thing no one said this then and Rice often crosses the halfway line, i don't know where you got that idea from.
Kante (just like Gattuso was to a lesser extent) is a box to box midfielder.

That's because the coach prefers Busquet's leadership qualities. They do play alike but it's pretty clear which of the 2 is better now (age has also caught up with Busquet).

Serious pace? Maybe Kanté. More pace than Rodri? Loads of them. Keane, Gattuso, Vieira, Busquets, Makelele, Casemiro, Davids, Rijkaard, many more no doubt as well.

The bolded 3 were not DM's and Busquets was never even close to having any sort of pace.

A DM can move box to box, is Sergio Ramos a box to box defender?

I mean, Kanté goes through very long spells where the Chelsea fans get fed up to high hell with how average he is on the ball and how little he helps in attack. It was only after Tuchel came in last season that he started performing again.

This seems completely made up to be honest.

What, you don't remember all those "very long spells" where us Chelsea fans were fed up to high hell with Kante?

I'm always slagging him off, can't stand him.

I'd heard rumours that he had a growing personal hate group.

Probably down to good coaching.
To be fair he was considered the next best thing when he was at Atletico Madrid. His poor start at City lowered people's opinions on him which he's now changing.

Nope, Rodri is a better footballer. Better control, passing etc

Don’t agree, offensively and defensively Fabinho is a better footballer. He already has 1 goal and 1 assist in 6 games this season, he has a better shot, better final pass and all round is just the more rounded footballer hence why he has played DM CB and Rb positions extensively during his career.

Rodri has the more accurate short passing but that’s probably about the only area he betters Fabinho.

I'm not sure this is true. Even with Fabinho at his best, Liverpool's midfield looks very pedestrian in terms of passing.

Rodri is much closer to a DLP (think Carrick) than Fabinho or Casemiro is. All great players, mind.

Neither is Rodri close to having any sort of pace, and those 3 all played that role at times, they were just also world class players who could do more than break up the play.

Check out Fabinho last assist to Salah, against Brentford, I can probably think about a dozen examples of him playing balls like that particularly to Salah. Rodri is a better short passer recycler of the ball though.

And Liverpool are the 2nd best passing team in the league after City so wouldn’t say it’s that pedestrian, Thiago and Fabinho are good passers of the ball lomg and short.

And agree with last point Rodri is closer to a Carrick esque midfielder than the other two.

Rodri is the better player by far imo.

Rodri is way faster than Busquets though I'd never call him fast and also way more agile though again he's not exactly Kante agile. They are very similar players but Busquets is far better on the ball but far worse at actually defending. Rodri is probably the best dm in the premier league in the tackle and rarely if ever gets beaten. In fact he probably gets beaten less than Fernandinho did which is why we don't tactical foul as often.

He really struggled with getting to grips with the physicality of the premier league for well over a year but now he's found his place and is up to speed. Like funny enough Fabinho both were written off as flops after 1 season and I'd argue it took Rodri longer to adapt. Honestly I can't say who's the better player, Fabinho is more physical but I'd say Rodri is the better passer (although Fabinho is pretty good), better in the tackle and in the air. I honestly couldn't pick one over the other, I do think Rodri would really struggle with Klopps system though and Fabinho wouldn't struggle quite as much at City.

Top 5? He doesn't even get in his own national team!

There are so many recent examples of players who couldn't get in their own national team for reasons that have nothing to do with ability (Laporte, Benzema, Sancho, Ter Stegen etc). It's no measure of how good someone is.

Any technically gifted midfielder was (and has) struggled in Klopp's system. He wants runners and pretty much exclusively runners. That's why Thiago isn't working out.

Wrong Thiago has been in good form over the last few months, Keita has failed partly due to injuries.

He doesn’t want exclusively runners which is why 18 year old 5’7 Elliot was starting games for Liverpool against Chelsea before he got injured.

I'd say they've taken awhile to adapt similar to most midfielders we've signed in truth. I think combined with a new league plus Pep/Klopps systems its usually a long bedding in process, everything written about Thiago last season was said about Bernardo before he went insane in our 100 point season. Everything said about Rodri was previously said about Fabinho (except by me, my Rodri slaughter was way oot). I think players usually need almost a full season of bedding in under Klopp/Pep. Its no coincidence we've heard after their first seasons Bernardo, Rodri, Cancelo and less so Mahrez were all flops as were Fabinho, Thiago at Liverpool, its takes them awhile to get up to speed. I still think Thiago will be good for Liverpool too despite his early struggles, I don't think its the ideal tactical set up for him but he'll still be decent.

Best DM in the league? It's between him and Fabinho and I think he edges it.

In my opinion he has been our Player of the year, alongside Bernardo. By far our most important player at the moment

People as usual too quick to write him off

Same with Grealish, he’ll come great next season, win titles and the ones who ridiculed him on here will of course pretend they never said anything. Rodri also didn’t «fit in» last season.

I think it was the season before last he struggled... Teams were just ripping through City that season with him at DM.

Definitely a toss up between him and Fabinho.

He really is a Carrick regen. Same shirt number, similar build, same languid style.

Absolute class and unbelievable player.

Doesn't have the yellow card shield of Casemiro or Fabinho... Very good player though.

I like him but I wonder if Pep will replace him in the summer. It was striking how Silva was tasked with taking the ball off the keeper rather than Rodri dropping deep. Their defence isn’t getting any protection from the midfield anymore
I feel he would be sensational in a Klopp side

Silva progresses with the ball way more than Rodri in general, he's a better dribbler. Rodri is more of the pin that switches play, drops into defense sometimes...

And their midfield isn't getting much help from the defense. I know you hate inverted fullbacks but that provided a lot of stability to City in past years. With Cancelo/Walker/De Bruyne their midfield is less stable in transition.
