Robin Van Persie - Were you happy we sold Jaap Stam?

Me too. A fit RvP firing on all cylinders is miles above anything Rooney has ever managed.

And he was just so freaking lovable his first year, he just couldn't stop smiling when interviewed.

For instant influence he must be our best buy since Cantona. From Day One he was our best player, a fantastic sight for us supporters to witness.
I love RVP but his form in 2012-13 vs Rooney in 2009-10 is a very tight contest in my opinion. I also think you could make a case for Van Nistelrooy matching his impact when he joined. God I miss Van Persie (and Van Nistelrooy for that matter!)

Thats 18 goals for the season for RVP. Wonder how would he have done under a better manager here.

Not many at all, people are forgetting how bad he was in his last year here, he made rooney look first class. Glad we got rid.

That one Fenerbahce player looks incredibly frustrated he didn't get the pass from RVP.

He created their 1st goal today with some decent footwork and a good cross. Was watching them for Nani; he too was lively (seemed to be given a free role and was the main playmaker)

20 now with today's goals. Him and Hernandez have scored 46 between them this year funnily enough and either one would have been a useful bench player considering how poor we've been in front of goal. Seems like neither were happy to be that though.

Van Persie's too expensive (salary wise) to be a bench player. It was right to get rid at the time, he'd already done his job. Was unbelievable in his first season, and unfortunately we wasted his second season on Moyes - think there was another title in him, under a competent manager.

Will be hard to judge some of the decisions for a few seasons I think. If the likes of Martial and Rashford blossom into top players soon, we will probably be better off that they got those minutes this year.

I thought he was unfairly sold. Most of the time he was upfront it was with Falcao rather than someone like Mata/Rooney behind him.

But understandable I suppose. Long live Rashford.

How's he been at Fenerbahce then? I remember there were reports of him being unhappy a while ago.

Still didn't like how we sold him for a measly £4m and barely replaced him. Though I guess that would have got in the way of Rashford.

Stoke bound, how the mighty have fallen ?
He is 33. In an interview last year he said his family was very comfortable in the Cheshire area and planned to relocate there after he retires.
It might be a move that suits him well.

He is no longer up to the physical demands of the Premier League. This is the reason why we sold him.

Do love the hindsight of you lot sometimes; scores a few goals in a shit league and suddenly he was the lethal poacher you were missing last year...

Didn't West Ham turn him down recently because they're looking for a better striker? Says it all.

Stoke would be better inclined to concentrate their efforts on Berahino as they're doing, Van Persie isn't up to the demands of the Prem anymore.

I was glad he left. For most of that last season he spent the majority of the games he played blowing snot out of his nose. It seemed like every time the camera was on him he did it.

Who is saying that? We were spot on to sell van Persie. Maybe even did it a season too late.

Wish he can end his career with a nice contract in china or MLS rather than rejoining the premier league.

His first season at OT though :drool::drool: what a nice memory.

Well, I mean, van Persie did go for 12 games without scoring in his first season - from, what Feb to the end of April, 2 months - the season is 9 months long, luckily those '6 months' we're very telling.

And he was good during those 12 games, he contributed to our general play.

He didn't go 12 games without a goal in 12/13. It was 10. It goes up like Zlatan's age. Next season, Zlatan will be 45 and Robin Van Persie's last goal for United will be the free kick against City.

To be fair though, he only went 5 league games without a goal, and in those 5 games, he got 3 assists. He only played the full 90 in 3 of those 5.

Between that, there was the two legs against Madrid.

There was also The FA Cup game against Reading, and the tie (and replay) against Chelsea. In those three games he only played 20 minutes in each. Those 3 games didn't even account to a full 90 minutes for RvP.

The first game of the 'drought' was against QPR. He got an assist and went off injured in the first half. He was rushed back and started the next game. At the time the whole Caf (and beyond) could see he was playing half-fit. He should have sat out 2 or 3 games but we were so reliant on him.

Hopefully he gets a great reception at OT and we get to give him the Thank You and Farewell he deserved.

I was just watching his goals in the first season for us. What a player!

Really sad how it ended up after SAF left. Maybe he already was in decline at the end of that season, but you can't help but feel we wasted one year of his peak under Moyes.

We wasted a year of every United players career under Moyes, not to mention a year of the clubs history and lets not forget a years worth of matches for the fans having to watch the tumescent stuff Moyes had the team serving up.

That is all true.

I just feel most sorry for RvP, because he was the only world class player in the squad.

Thought he was still good under Moyes when he played but his injury issues came back from mismanagement. SAF really treated him with care.

He was injury prone for the vast majority of his career, not sure we can blame Moyes for that with any kind of certainty.

I think he just slipped past his best, he was at that age and his injury problems were fairly predictable. We knew upon signing him there was a good chance he'd miss plenty of games.

Looking forward to his reception though, should be great. Always a shame when great players like him and Rio slip away with little appreciation.
