'To strengthen an enemy is the other negative point of this loss,' Wenger told Eurosport’s parent station TF1. 'We wanted to avoid it but we couldn’t. Honestly, I’d rather sell him abroad, to Paris Saint-Germain for example.

'Manchester United know him and know his qualities. He’s really an exceptional player, believe me.'

'Van Persie is a great player so it’s always sad to lose such a player. But we must consider the economic reality and the will of the player,' he added.

'When you can’t succeed in extending the contract of a player that is in its last year, there is no other way but to let him go. It’s sad because he played for us for eight years. He’s 29 now. He was 21 when he came and it’s another bitter pill to swallow.

'A lot has happened before and we survived it all, but this is a real challenge because Van Persie scored 30 (Premier League) goals in a year, almost one per game. It’s a tough challenge for our new forwards to replace him.'

'The economic part of it is the only satisfaction. But money doesn’t go out on the field and play, players do,' he said.

'It will give more chance to Giroud. When Van Persie is here, his name is the first on the team-sheet and the others follow. So there’s a void to fill.'

Pretty candid stuff from Wenger.

Yep, he's telling it like it is, while leaving out the disloyal cuntarama stuff.

Arsenal is a great club and you will bounce back. The downside is that you lose experience and continuity. You have many quality players in your squad but they need time together to perform at highest level. This season will be hard but maybe next season you can challenge for a title.

This signing is another error by Fergie. It is so reminiscent of the signing of Berbatov. A superb player, but not needed by the club at the time. The arrival of Berbatov disrupted the trio of Ronaldo, Rooney, and Tévez, which had worked so well the previous season. I fear the arrival of van Persie will similarly upset the balance. It is unfair on Welbeck, whose progress has been sensational. I also struggle to see how Fergie will fit Rooney, van Persie, and Kagawa into the same team. It is also a huge fee for a 29 year old player.

Despite these concerns, I cannot help but be extremely excited because of the player's quality.

I was going to completely disagree with you, and then I read the final line. Now I'm a little bit :wenger::wenger:

So in effect, you think signing him is an error, but you're excited? A bit odd...

You still alive?

Fair play.

I would multi-quote you for shits and giggles but can't be arsed, just consider yourself mentally multi-quoted, cry a little as I laugh heartily imagining Keano slapping Vieira while 'are' Gary gives a smug grin.

I feel like Mancunians are Vikings, raping and pillaging the Gooners at will.

Even you have to smile as you get done again.

The very real fear is that it is a Sisyphean task - you roll the team up to being ready to win stuff - players leave - the team rolls back. Rinse & repeat.

One day I will have a funny tagline, that is my main goal in life!

Back on topic, I hope Van Persie gets a decent run out against Everton, even if it is for 20 or so minutes as he hasn't had much pre-season.

Is there going to be a press conference to announce the signing soon?

as the medical was completed and he passed, I expect there will be one tomorrow afternoon :)

Pfft, I'm not excited at all - I'm far too mature to get excited by...signing one of the world's best strikers!! Yesssss!!

*passes out from excitement* :D

It's in error in that we do not need van Persie. Before we signed van Persie, our attacking options were already excellent in terms of quality and depth.

Left-back and central midfield are positions in need of investment rather than yet another striker. I think most posters will agree with this.

As for my excitement, how could I not excited? I do not think we needed to sign van Persie, but of course I am looking forward to seeing him play for United.

 I hope he goes all Robbie Keane on us and just says he's always been a fan of United!

Signing the autographs after medical.

I still can't believe we will see Van Persie and Rooney together..for the same team!

At the end of the day it must suck fecking balls. A side of me does feel sorry for Arsenal. You watch the youth that Wenger brings in and turns them into very good players and they all walk off in the end before entering their prime (I'm not talking about RVP here specifically but more Fabregas, Nasri and so on before them). We got a glimpse of that with Ronaldo here.

As long as you have wenger there you'll be fine. Yes, you won't be winning trophies but you'll be competing and playing attractive football while doing so. It must be apparent by now to all that it isn't really wenger that is stubborn but it's the board and them not opening up the purse strings a little in both transfers and wages. If he was given some money to spend on wages and transfers then you'd be competing with a real viable shot at winning trophies.

The key difference for me is Van Persie was the best player in the league last season, proven at the top level, and someone who will improve us. This for me wasn't the case with Berbatov and I remember being annoyed at the signing.

Yeah, RVP is on another level to what berba ever was. I remember having my doubts about how berba would fit in with us, with him having a much slower style then us. He did alright, but you could tell he never quite fit in. RVP is just one of the best strikers in the world, who would improve any team.

I think it's all going to seem a bit unbelievable and strange until RVP takes the field for us.

feck Hazard, Lucas Moura. They are little twinkles who have made extremely stupid career decisions. Pure short-term thinking and I hope they both suffer for it.

This guy is the real fecking deal. The signing we've all wanted since Ronnie left and I bet the players are buzzing from this news.

Even without the Berbatov signing Ronaldo was never going to stay longer than he did. Tevez was unhappy in Manchester even after he left United
