Robert Lewandowski's agent: Manchester? Its always raining there.

But does that require different skills than an accountant has or even a lawyer ? Because those contracts involve legal issues too, right?

It depends, in France a lot of agents are in fact solicitors(notary, lawyer, jurist) specialized in sports business, so in that case you don't need someone different than your lawyer who calls himself an "agent". But you need someone specialized in sports, you can't just hire the first lawyer you encounter, for example a company who wants to make a merger will hire a specialist in merger.

Also you don't have to monthly pay an agent, you can also only hire him when you are in negotiation, he will provide you legal support and advise during that period and after you just part ways, in that type of situations the agent take a cut on the signing bonus.

Meh, would have loved him here but if M&M continue to get better and with youngsters like Pereira, Wilson and Januzaj, I am more interested in getting big name player at CB and possibly a CM as Carrick will turn 35.

He can stay where he is. Don't want such players who cares about the weather. Maybe it's raining more in Manchester than Munich but that's not fecking Sibiria!

His agent is an idiot. It actually rains more in Munich than in Manchester, it just rains on less days.

Amazing that there's even a thread about a quote from an agent about a player we're not even planning on buying.

I'd never understand why do this players need agents in the first place, are they not capable of managing their finances themselves.

There is an example btw of a star player who always did it on his own: Jurgen Klinsmann. He never had a manager. But...

The story I read many years ago goes like that: When he was about to leave Stuttgart, where he became a star, Bayern wanted him. He told the then manager Uli Hoeness "look, Inter offers me so much money, can you do better?". After a lengthy negotiation, Hoeness told him: "You are right. Take Inter's money, that offer is better than ours." Klinsmann was impressed by Hoeness honesty and asked him whether Hoeness could help him negotiate the Inter contract. Hoeness did, and he continued to help him with his following contracts. Later he went to Monaco (low tax -- but no pun intended), Tottenham, Bayern (hello!), and Sampdoria. And he always had the reputation of having the by far best contracts of all active players -- which allegedly drove especially Lothar Matthaus crazy, who apparently hates him until today. He made a whole lot of money without ever paying any agent's fee. There you go.

If you were going to sit down with a club or a company that wanted you to sign you to an endorsement deal and they had people who specialized in negotiation and writing contracts wouldn't you want some professional help on your side?

Do players need full time agents? The answer is no btw. Not to mention some players never had agents and survived. Maybe players should stop being greedy or perhaps they should value where they are. Why would we want this knob head and his prat of an agent talking shite every 5 minutes.

There's a lot more than club contracts handled by agents.

The PR side of things is huge these days, you can be sure that certain players get favourable press if they're under certain agencies such is the power of these agencies. Journalists will fear being blacklisted and not having access to an agencies star players.

Then there's advice on investments, their family's will be looked after, they'll use their contacts to get exclusive tickets and merchandise, sponsorship deals.

These agencies these days will have teams of people to manage a players life basically. It's not just one man who negotiates a bit with the players club every 2 or 3 years.

Well that's the point. When you have entities managing peoples lives - then you have a problem. When you are a multi millionaire you have to manage your own life else you will lose it very very quickly. His agents come out and said that and maybe lewandowski said that to him - just don't care.

There are valid reasons to have agents but some people should just get an accountant and a bit of common sense. Some of these idiots probably wipe their ass with 50 dollar bills. Who cares if it rains a lot? They need to fecking grow up. At a certain level of wealth, they should have the ability to say 'I don't want to be a greedy idiot with my CV saying can kick a ball well'.

I think you'll find a footballer will lose it a lot quicker without a team of very savvy people managing it for them.

But you speak of this from the perspective of a normal person with a normal life, growing up and learning about finances and what not the hard way.

A lot of these players have been pampered and catered for their whole (footballing) lives, and the better the talent, the more chance of them being removed from reality to the point where the bubble they live in has to be managed by others. It will be few and far between where you will find star players who are intellectually and financially competent in such things unless they have a vested interest in developing their 'brand' from an early age.

It's no different to how entertainers (singers, actors etc) who are young stars need handling most of the time especially so when compared to those who find fame later in life and beyond their formative years.

I think the likes of Scholes and co. who were agentless were fortunate to be at family clubs who had their best interests at heart and basically developed them as people and wouldn't dream of f'ing them over. That's far from the norm in football, though, especially for those who have had to make a number of moves to reach the top.

It would certainly help if they've advisors but I'm not at all comfortable with how agent nowadays manage and control all their life.

Would love him at United. Perfect modern day striker. Having said that, now that we've got Martial, I think we should be looking to get a wide forward who's going to bag us a good amount of goals. I think Griezmann would be perfect for the right side. A front line of Memphis-Martial-Griezmann would be frightening, in my opinion.

Pretty much. Assuming Martial & Memphis both progress this season as expected, a wide forward would allow us to move Mata infield and we'd have a great attack.

Kucharski is a money nose and nothing more his words mean less than a sock
