Rio Olympics 2016

Since I know basically feck all about gymnastics, is Simone Biles' physique that common among the girls competing ? She seems like so much stronger than all the other competitors.

Her body type is one of the standard gymnast patterns but obviously the power she generates, combined with that flexibility is extraordinary. That said, the majority of the performance difference between her and the others comes from the accuracy of the technique and timing.

There's a bit of a debate among traditionalists about whether the new marking system favours athletes over artists, (and indeed shorter women over longer legged ones) but when you watch her in action, it's so obvious that she's the best that the discussion becomes irrelevant.

Ennis-Hill was too good for the rest in the hurdles. Johnson-Thompson should be very strong in the high jump though.

As good as Phelps is, I think it's pretty unfair to label him as the undisputed greatest Olympian ever when there are so many swimming medals available and, as long as you're a sprinter, you can compete for most of them.

these girls...all of em. amazing to see them do their routines. A human body going through all that.

I don't normally watch gymnastics. glad I did.

The way they manipulate and stretch their bodies is something that is so unique and difficult.

US ladies team were so good this year.

World record in the women's 10000m smashed by 14 seconds. The second 5k would have beaten the 5k olympic record.

Impossible.

Remarkable that this apparently Almaz Ayana's second ever 10km race.

There's a lot of reasons to think Ayana is doping. Pity.

She hasn't realised it's a tactical race yet. I do wonder if that's actually a factor in it, she maybe knew that she wasn't ready to win one on tactics, but knew she had a chance if she could push her stamina to the limits.

It is an extraordinary time. The old record was set in 93 (and that's still the all-time second place) but today's race has provided 4 of the fastest 5 times ever.

And is now considered to be a very dodgy time. There's little doubt that Ayana was doping unfortunately, and probably a lot of the field.

Let's just take take a look at the ratio of gold medals/medals in total to see he's at the very least in the top 3 best ever athletes.

I see. She just looks so much stronger than the others but at the same her technique is just amazing, just flawless. For me, gymnasts are the most complete athletes, they have everything. Strength, pace, mobility, agility, control.

So not golfers then?

KJT just jumped a British record in the heptathlon high jump of 1.98m. Leading after two events with Jess Ennis in third.

The Belgian lady who equalled her look like her twin! Nice to see them cheering each other on.

really strange to see low crowds at so many of the events.

Have the locals been priced out of it? If so, they should give the tickets away as it looks bit embarrassing.

Presumably we will get a bronze in the swimming once Efimova is stripped of her medals right?

Just seen one of the worst off-side decisions ever in this Women's Sweden-USA match. Outrageous.

I thought I was doing alright running a 10k in under 40 minutes then I checked the speed-walking world record. Crazy.

Silver for GB in the team dressage. Germany just edged it unfortunately but the standard was high. Hopeful for our chances on Monday, led by Charlotte.
