Rio Ferdinand

@Wumminator If it’s of any help, I completely second every single argument you’ve put out there.

For people to call out being anti-Qatar bid as being racist is as ridiculous an argument as it can get. Sure, there will be a few people who will be against Qatar for the wrong and probably racist reasons (I personally don’t know a single such person but not denying that there wouldn’t be any). But the dominant argument has been the human rights issues and concerns with our club being owned by a state.

I have no idea why any of you even care whether or not some people who are against the Qatari bid are racists. That’s like arguing whether or not some people whose name begins with a vowel are racist. I mean, yeah, sure. You can’t really argue against that (unless your name is wumminator)

The only thing that matters here is whether or not there are some people against the Qatari bid who are not racist and happen to have coherent, rational and convincing reasons for their objections. Because assuming those people exist, then they should be heard. And trying to imply that their opinions is basically indistinguishable from what racists think is a shitty thing to do.

But anyway. Rio Ferdinand. I like him. He’s flawed (who isn’t?) but he’s a very likeable guy.

Another thread that's a prime example of why oligarchs and autocratic regimes want to buy football clubs. The PL have a lot to answer for letting Abramovich start this nonsense.

Why agree with me and throw me under the bus like that.

I am genuinely 100% baffled by this post. I can not imagine living my life viewing the world in this way.
What? Separating objective truth from biased opinion?

Rather than talking about how you feel, why not offer a rebuttal.

The PL will support Qatar too, as long as that lines up enough money for their pockets.

His AMA is going great

It's not bad at all. He answered majority of the questions, and it's not short answers either so fair feck to him(if it's him to be fair). Shite questions though.

That fecking video from the CL final where he keeps just saying Ballon D’or is infuriating. He’s really starting to irritate me these days.

Wrong about basically everything, zero tactical knowledge and just chats absolute shit constantly.

Some of the shit he spouts is really cringeworthy. Talking about Bellingham in the manner of a teenager. I don’t know whether he’s been given the script to appeal to the younger audience or what….thats probably giving him a bit too much credit

Have you just met Rio? He's always been this way...

I like him, fecking legend too....

i swear people just get annoyed for the sake of being annoyed, how can you actually believe one of the best CB's of his Generation has zero tactical knowledge.

i love Rio, what a player he was, never hides how much he loves the club or how much he wants us to win

He may have had it imprinted on him when he played but you can just tell he's a bit simplistic. Instead of talking about the goal he just repeatedly shouts "Ballon D'or" about 7 or 8 times, as if that's what people give a shit about in that moment. He's weird.

His opinions are all very 'bloke down the pub'. I'm sure I'm not alone in thinking this about him.

i listened to his podcast today about the england game and he analysed the game quite well, perhaps he's being asked to be enthusiastic and appeal to the 'bloke down the pub' not everyone watches football to hear in depth tactical analysis at every moment, they have to entertain. i don't think any pundit really irritates me.

Seems we're finally making use of him in a transfer-liason role.

Makes so much more sense for guys like Rio talking to players than someone like Woodward in the past. Was always envious of Bayern and Madrid for doing that with their legends.

I was a bit surprised it was Rio as he left United when Yoro was about.. 7?!

I thought Varane might have been a good one as he’s French, just won the FA Cup at United and has played for both teams

But no doubt Varane will have much better memories of Madrid than anywhere else in his career so maybe that would have been suicide

The reason they don’t like Rio is because of the what he is and you can see that from this thread. He’s from Peckham so he’s a certain type of way and the people in this thread don’t like that but don’t want to say it outright.

Just to call a spade a spade.

Just like most of us 80s/90s kids know about Baresi, Koeman etc even though we were kids, he'll know all about Rio and the legend he is. If Yoro can be half as good as Rio was then we'll have one of the best CBs for the next decade.

It's something we should do more of, we seemed to have burned bridges with a lot of our Modern legends and we should be leaning on them for the hard sell.

Are you saying people dont like him cause they're racists?

Are you saying it’s because he’s black or because he’s a southerner?

I don't actively dislike Rio but has definitely has a tendency to be irritating. Imo he chats a lot of shit, and that has nothing to do with what you are implying.

Love how much of a shameless muppet he is.

The clubs official website have now taken it down. In hindsight having a naked man in his 40's record a personal message for an 18 year old where you can only see his face was probably a bit inappropriate.

Rio approaches the game more like a fan than a serious ex-pro, but that's just who he is. I for one am pleased there are different types of pundits out that. Also, I wouldn't say he doesn't have tactical knowledge, that's frankly ridiculous.

I don't agree with a lot of his takes, e.g. overrating Foden in an England shirt and suggesting Saka play left back, he's one of the more accessible ex-pros out there and seems to really be about bridging the gap between fans and players.

Nothing inappropriate about it, everyone just loves feeling offended and tries finding wrong in the simplest things. Naked? He was shirtless, footballer interviews are done with topless players all the time in the tunnel and after the game in all sports and there's no issue, even on this video there isn't an issue. It was a quick welcome message and the content was clear and not suggesting. All a joke how folks see things nowadays.
