Leeds captain Rio Ferdinand has handed in a written transfer request.

Ferdinand's agent said that the England defender has asked to leave Elland Road in a decision which is likely to prompt a bid from Manchester United.

Chairman Peter Ridsdale warned Ferdinand earlier that he would reject a transfer request from the former West Ham centre-back.

He said: "The only thing I can confirm is that if Rio Ferdinand hands in a transfer request it will be turned down.

"We've had no offers for Rio Ferdinand so it amazes me he has a choice to make. He is going nowhere. Where does he think he is going - into thin air?"

Ferdinand said earlier this week that he was going to take 48 hours to decide his future and visited relatives in Peckham yesterday while he pondered whether to stay with cash-strapped Leeds.

The 23-year-old has also discussed his future with new Leeds boss Terry Venables.

Leeds are expected to make a healthy profit on the £18 million they paid the Hammers for him in November 1999 with Ridsdale demanding a British record fee for his captain.

Ridsdale: "I can confirm that Rio Ferdinand has asked for a transfer. This request has been rejected."

Order of events:

Leeds make statement to stock-exchange.

Stock exchange make statement

Leeds press conference (well comment from Grimsdale in the South of France) later in the day to clarify their situation.

United statement tomorrow morning stating that we begin negotiations <img src="graemlins/devil.gif" border="0" alt="[Devil]" />

Well, his transfer request already <a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport/hi/english/football/eng_prem/newsid_2128000/2128763.stm" target="_blank">rejected!</a>

But we WILL get the man!! :D

Ridsdale is making a huge mistake, as always. Rio and his agent aren't going to say: "Alright, you said no. So Ferdinand's staying".

The idiot just can't get his club off the headlines line he should. Rio will go, so why not settle this fast, pocket the money and start thinking about signing someone?

Even the Leeds fans already said that if Rio wants to go he should.

TBH i think he's always been willing to part with Rio..especially for 30mil+..which will help wipe off leeds' debt... however, i think he wanted Rio to put in a transfer request, so it'll seem as if Rio wanted to go and not Leeds wanting to sell...

just to save face i suppose.

Dont worry people the breakthrough has happened, once Rio made the request he is as good as gone,

Forget ridsale as the PLC will consider it as the player wants to leave and a massive offer is on the table..(soon hopefully)

Terry Venables will respect the decision.. <img src="graemlins/yawn.gif" border="0" alt="[Yawn]" />

He's been squeezing our bollocks for every penny he can get. Greedy bastard. <img src="graemlins/devil.gif" border="0" alt="[Devil]" />

I don't understand why we haven't made a bid yet - surely we should have to make it difficult for Ridsdale, to force him to at least put it to the plc board and shareholders first.

anyone read abt the bits about us having points docked and Rio banned if he ever joins us?

Is there any truth in this??? <img src="graemlins/nervous.gif" border="0" alt="[Nervous]" />

I agree, Ridsdale is trying to make it look like he did everything possible to keep Rio so he won't get strung up by the balls. Losing your manager and best player in the space of a month isn't exactly going to endear you to the fans is it?!

But we'll see what he has to say if and when we come knocking with £30 million....

What's marching's take on all this??

I reckon that we made a bid a long time ago.

Dont you think though he is going overboard with his hard stance ??

Though his statements seem to be nearing a deal too.."Secondly, no bid worthy of consideration has been received from any football club for Rio.

If he is not selling him, why does the bid need to be worthy of consideration ???

;) :p

The Bowyer delay may (a big may) speed things up especially if falls through

No. Only if Ferdinand just walks out on Leeds. If a regular transfer is complete than there's no connection to the new regulations.

Would you expect him to say "Off you go then mate ! We'll take £21 m from the scum and see ya"

If he goes to OT Leeds must surely get over £35m

and his stock has risen due to a decent world cup... if anything, i think his price might have come down later on this season.

Typical Yorkshire man that! Always thinking with his pocket. How much do you lot bloody well want? <img src="graemlins/annoyed.gif" border="0" alt="[Annoyed]" />

27 is the fair price, now play fair! <img src="graemlins/devil.gif" border="0" alt="[Devil]" />

Or you can keep a captain who has no interest of playing for you anymore and clearly considers you a B-rate club.

It will come to a compromise in the 30m region.

Don't worry Leeds fans...

Risdale has said on several occasions that Rio's going no where...so surely this must be the case?

I think the fact that Rio put in a transfer request will mean Utd offer a lower price, I dcan't see why this would raise his price further.

If Leeds had negotiated prior to a transfer request then they could have asked for more, I think Ridsdale has proved what a fool he is..........
