Gaming Retro Video Game Thread

In my opinion Gamestop knew at release it was going to be hard to find after a short while, so kept a load back to sell later on at a higher price. They did something similar with the Metroid Prime Trilogy IIRC.

Ah yeah, read up about Metroid Prime. You could be right. As for Monolith Soft and Nintendo, is there any explanation there? Regarding the original releases I mean.

About MS being first-part? Nintendo just bought the majority of Namco Bandai's stake in the company a few years ago.

Sorry if you were talking about something else :p

Edited that, sorry didn't explain it too well. I mean about the reluctance to reprint and generally release it in the first place. Unless I'm mistaken, it sold out really quickly and people were crying out for a reprint and Europe/North America releases.

Ah. I'm not really sure why. The only reason I can think of is they just didn't want to go to the trouble to translate and release a game that they thought wouldn't sell. Luckily the fan campaign to bring over the three games worked and it sold pretty well. In the last couple of years they've got a lot better with bringing over Japanese games, helping third parties etc so it's all a nice step in that direction after all that nonsense.

Hopefully then they won't balls up X on the Wii U (they can't afford to!). I might actually buy the console just for that game if it turns out as it should...

The wii/wiiu and 3ds have all really fecked up the releasing of retro games.

They should have just released all their old titles at once and had them available from the get go.

Every fecking Thursday I log onto the 3ds virtual console hoping to see NES double dragon 2 and every fecking week I'm disappointed. Rant over :-)

Well a few months and pages later after being recommended to me, I finally got round to buying a copy of McDonaldland. Looking forward to playing it, looks fun (and challenging).

I wish they'd put more of them on the 3DS's Virtual Console, would have loved to try Earthbound.
One day I'll find an affordable original copy... one day :(

I have it on the WiiU. It starts of insanely difficult, but once you level up it gets very good. The humour and quirkiness is unlike any other game I've played.

I don't think it reviewed well at the time because it was such a Mario rip-off and such a blatant corporate vehicle for McDonalds. But as a platform for the NES, I found it slicker and more enjoyable than most.

Yeah I can imagine those lowering the opinions quite a bit at the time. Looking at current opinions though it seems that quite a lot of people enjoyed it. Also from what I've heard the game gets pretty hard as you go on, and that's always something I like in old games.

It's getting to be that handhels are the last proper gaming machines.

Well, I guess they can multimedia too, but I've never heard of anyone getting a 3DS or Vita for non gaming reasons.

Considering a Dingoo to load up to the gills with retro games, but I suppose I can just do that with my old PSP anyway. It has a dodgy power socket though. :(

It is!

I'm going to hide in here for a bit. All that talk of watching tv whilst playing games makes me said and yearn for the days when Consoles were real :(
Oh yes, this is the place to be!

I keep looking for/getting new games yet I still have so many that I haven't completed. Oh well it's all part of the fun.

I watched Ashen's review of the Dingoo a week or so ago and it actually isn't very good. Only NES and CP System games were playable, the others were either too slow and/or had other problems, which is a shame.

Damn, I read "more powerful than the PSP" and assumed "more better". PSP'll be just fine, despite the janky power socket, nothing a bit of electric tape doesn't solve. Already have a bunch of Alundra, Wild Arms, Breath Of Fire and such on it.

Yeah the PSP is probably one of the best emulation devices. Still find it a bit crap with some systems/games but that's probably because I've only got the versions from around 2007/2008 on there.

I think I'm probably just used to the side-scrolling ones, seems weird to think about playing an isometric Batman game. Although if I could actually beat it, at least that would be one plus point compared to the others!

Just noticed a newly listed copy of Little Nemo: The Dream Master for a good price so grabbed that baby. Glad to get it finally, wanted it for ages.

Not too sure it counts as retro, but since it's psx, I'll mention it. After bringing it up in the ps4 thread, I really want to play Kula World again. If I had a 5er on my PSN, it'd be on my Vita now...

I had built quite the collection of the Official Playstation Magazine and its demos as a kid but don't have them anymore. :(

I think my favourite was probably Rollcage, loved the ability to race upside down. :D

I think I only had two PS1 demo discs but I seemed to play them loads

Kurushi always seems interesting and quite creepy, but I never knew what the hell I was supposed to do. Just went around pressing random cubes and falling to my death.

Rollcage needs to come back, or to the PSN.

Yeah, Kurushi was odd, but interesting. Nightmare Creatures was the demo that freaked me out.

I had some demo I had to send away for, had some third person shooter that was quite good, can't remember the name of it though.

Anyone remember the full home made games from the black psx that'd be on the demo discs? They were very low fi, but some were great, there was this kind of micro machine racer I utterly loved.

I'll take a stab in the dark and say that Redlambs remembers those ;)

For me out of all the demos it was all about Tony Hawk's Pro Skater. Spent bloody ages on that, and then subsequently on all of the full games after that.
