United's reserves began the defence of their FA Premier League (North) title with a 1-0 at West Brom courtesy of a Daniel Nardiello strike.
New second-string chief Mike Phelan picked up his first win since succeeding Brian McClair in the hot-seat over the summer after striker Nardiello hit a second-half winner from the edge of the area.
Midfielder Luke Chadwick continued his return from injury with a 90-minute run-out, while David May also played the full game on Wednesday night.
Meanwhile, full-back Mikael Silvestre was on target for France in a 1-1 draw with Tunisia, heading home Zinedine Zidane's corner in the 18th minute.
Silvestre, who was a fringe player for his country at the World Cup, said: "It's always nice to add to my goal tally. We struggled to impose ourselves and the state of the pitch didn't help.
"We were playing with a three-man defence for the first time. I think a draw was a fair result."
