Who do we sign? We can't afford to just have Eriksen alone. Are there any gems for this position attainable?
Assume it will be Ederson, but seems like a difficult deal to do in January.

Ederson would be perfect to rotate with Mainoo and Ugarte.
Carlos Baleba. I know we need someone who can come in and take over immediately. So this may be bit early but I really want us to look that guy. He is good .
Ederson would be ideal, but I cant see anyone involved in a title race leaving their club in January
Caqueret? Ederson? Douglas Luiz on loan?
I think a loan makes most sense. Luiz on loan would be ideal.
Then we can get the ideal player in the summer.

Age isn’t the only issue. Clearly a quality player but the fee would also likely be north of £40m. System wise we also don’t know how well he’d suit a 3-4-3 system.
Ederson however has played central and wing back positions in a similar shape for Atalanta.
Whatever happened to Toby Collyer?
It is either him, or an odd loan if we Casemiro leaves this January.

I like Caqueret, plays a bit like Frenkie de Jong
It isn't that big a task. We have essentially already replaced them with Ugarte and Mainoo. We need competition/depth for both though.

I'd rather get the replacement right than rush into signing the wrong player in January. Even if we end up plugging the gap with an academy player like Collyer in the interim, I'd sell Casemiro so we can free up funds and plan accordingly for the summer.
Baleba would be my preferred pick at this time but he'd obviously come with a hefty price tag. That's the sort of level we should be targeting though.

Ugarte isn’t a DM for us he’s box to box. Ederson is the one.
I agree he’s not a sitting Anchor-type DM but he’s also not a proper box-to-box as he’s very rarely ever breaking the opponents box. He gets forward at times and is involved with the play around the box but will more often than not be the first phase of our rest defence. I’d say he’s very similar to someone like Baleba and Joao Gomes in type if we were looking for someone like-for-like.
If we want a player who can cover both then I agree Ederson is near perfect, and he’s at an age where he should be at the beginning of his peak years. Signing him and Angel Gomes would give us a really good range of options IMO, all at really solid ages for the squad build.
Ruben in the past has said he prefers the Alonso type vs the Casimero type. So who would fit that better next to Ugarte?

Frenkie has been quite poor for sometime now, he lives by the hype of that Ajax team. He's hasn't reached the heights expected for him. For the fee and specially the wages he ears he's definitely a no go. He's one of those players who isn't creative enough to make up for the lack of defensive work he does.
If Casemiro leaves in Jan, then I think we need a Ugarte backup for now. Mainoo and Eriksen fill in the other spot. In the summer then, I would like us to sign a partner for Ugarte - someone like a Stiller with a wide distribution.

For a cheaper version but with experience already in the league, got for Mateus Fernandes. He is only 20 and he signed for Southampton for only 15M from Sporting, so he might have some connections with Ruben already, I'm not sure. But he is a quality CM that could add youthful energy alongside Ugarte. I don't know if he is as skillful as Kobbie in getting out of tight spaces etc, and I love Kobbie as a youth making a huge impact, but Fernandes can play a full 90 minutes which Kobbie can't manage. My dream signing is Carlos Baleba, but he would probably be around 100M based off recent history of Brighton selling CMs. I imagine we could get Fernandes for much cheaper and he is a quality young player.
A few of the players mentioned are too limited on the ball to play next to Ugarte.
Varela could be an interesting option. But if Luiz is available for loan, even if it means sending Zirkzee in return, then I’d love us to explore that option.

We will get ROFLstomped with Eriksen in a midfield two.
Absolutely a high priority position, been saying it's the #2 after a CF to get depth for Ugarte, as our midfield shape collapses without him on the pitch. Ugarte as a player also puts in a ridiculous amount of work rate so he is someone who needs rest now and then, or cover for suspensions.

Probably would go and sign his girlfriend while we're at it like Juve did for the women's team. Lots of swap deal potential with Rashford and Zirkzee of interest to Italian clubs, while we are interested in CFs like Kolo Muani, Vlahović, Osimhen and then Douglas Luiz in midfield. Would balance us out quite nicely there.

Eriksen, Bruno, Mainoo or even Casemiro can all play alongside Ugarte, we just can't set up a midfield without Ugarte. It's an urgent need for us.

Why do I keep reading about Luiz? Didn’t he only just sign for Juve?
It’s not worked out for him at Juve. He has had a few minor injuries but he isn’t getting any game time and is supposedly hoping to move back to the Premier League.
With Juve being heavily interested in Zirkzee, this could be a good opportunity for us.
He's a backup on high wages for them. They have Koopmeiners, Locatelli, Mckennie, Thuram, Fagioli, Douglas Luiz, and Arthur who never plays TBF. But that's clearly an overload of deep midfielders.
See that as a summer deal
It’s quite funny when you think about it. Fans will be negative about buying players from Italy because they don’t expect them to be good enough for the premier league, but players that have excelled in the EPL struggle over there, sometimes.
