Redknapp plans Rio Ferdinand bid

I dont think we'd have made it through the two quarter finals against Chelsea without Rio in the team, there will be a time though where we will need to look to the future and make a big decision over Rio probably while we can still get a fee for him as well

That's not just yet though

We also saw that it's still not a patch on the Rio-Vidic partnership. His leadership and communication along with his ability means he'll stay here until he retires, I reckon. Our other centre backs don't have that and won't for a few years yet.

Like I said, I don't want him to go. But incase he does we're well placed to deal with it.

It's possible that Fergie will want to get one of the younger lads alongside Vidic rather than risk losing both at the same time. Ideally that would me next Summer seeing as Rio has another year in him plus we'll be integrating a new 'keeper this year.

Q. If this was the only way we might get Modric, would you be ok with letting Rio go?

Only if we had a top, top player lined up to replace him. Its too early for Smalling to be first choice, imo. When was the last time we had a first choice CB age 21, 22, 23? Its not significantly relevant, but theres obviously a trend there.

I've not noticed any drop in performance level whatsoever, which is what matters.

No chance he's leaving. About as much of playing for Tottenham next season as I do.

He's still class but he's not the player he was 3 seasons ago.

I'd much rather Rio stayed, but I wouldn't be surprised if SAF is tempted to sell, sadly.

Will never happen. We look like we're going to lose Brown and possibly O'Shea, with VDS retiring Rios experience and authority at the back is going to be needed more than ever. Plus he's still class.

Rio is one of the leaders in the dressing room and on the field.

Vital for us and Fergie knows that.

given that we already lost 3 very experience head in the dressing room, rio's experience and influence in the dressing room are important as ever.

There is almost no difference whatsoever. Tiny bit slower and marginally less agile, but that's to be expected given that he's aged and that he's been out for so long.

It's so impressive that he's pretty much just as good despite having had that to deal with.

There's so little difference between his top level performance now and in 07/08 that it's not even worth discussing. I mean, Vidic has improved since then, and the majority on here still think Ferdinand is better if that thread in the United forum a couple of weeks ago is anything to go by.

Wut? Bloody hell it doesn't take much 'speculation' for people to turn negative does it?

It's not really negative, mate - I just think SAF really wants Modric.

I have to disagree. Rio was more agile back then that allowed him to nip in and make more interceptions. He was more dominant in the air too, (not to say he isnt now) which is perhaps a result of his back problems. Overall he just had an amazing season that year. I'm not sure how you can say he's basically the same really.

I don't think you are being negative at all. We all think it, few have got the bottle in here to step outside the party line.

I have no idea what Fergie is thinking, he is a difficult man to second guess.

I would say that it would be football madness to offload Rio, when the front and the back are where we are strong.

I don't think Modric, Sneijder or Nasri will be coming. Now that is negative!!

Modric, Bale and that half decent Brazillian fella, DefendioMidfieldio or whatever his name is.

Genuinely forgot it.

There's not many in that thread that thinks Rio is currently better than Vidic. If you compare their peaks though.... well then there's no comparison.

I don't want people to confuse my posts and think I'm saying I don't rate him. He's still absolute class.

Sorry but thinking SAF would be tempted to sell Rio in order to try and land Modric is very negative.

I hope I'm wrong, mate. I don't think I was being pessimistic - I'm just going by Sir Alex's comments about Modric, in recent months. But this is just speculation on my part and, hopefully, that's all it is in fact. :)

Fair enough. I have faith that SAF wouldn't be so stupid as to get rid of Rio who is one half of the best central defensive pairing the club has seen in my lifetime.

Apologies, it does seem that it was in regards to the two of them at their best.

Still stand by the view that there is still very little between Rio in top form now and Rio in top form then. His performances against Chelsea this year were phenomenal.

Why hasnt anyone done a harry redkapp kermit the frog mock up yet?

Like father, like son.

I love Rio, and think he is still top class. But we must admit, injuries appear to be really catching up to him. I'm not sure how many years in top flight football he has left in him.

Does Rio strike you as a person who wants to leave the club? He's one of the most active supporters of the club that I've seen in current players.

That'll teach me to second-guess Sir Alex. No wonder he's the most successful manager of all, while I got United beaten by Norwich on Prov Evo 4. :D

To be fair, the last time the teams met Sir Alex also got United beaten by Norwich.

Yeah, but his team didn't include Ronaldinho, Rivaldo and Cruyff like mine. :D
