I don't really get the voting system. Why would anyone ever not list all the shows? If I want Band of Brothers to win and I only vote for it, it gets 1 more point than all the rest. If I vote for all of them, it gets 1, 2, 3 and 4 points more than the alternatives.

I guess voting for 4 of them is the same as voting for all 5.
I dont really care what wins. Its interesting to see what the sites favourite shows are. I already know what my own favourites are.
Its based on the idea that people wont go out of their way to maximise the value of their own contribution and will just be honest. If you've only seen 2 shows then your vote should probably be worth less than someone who's seen all 5 and can offer a useful opinion.
Mind you if you've watched half a dozen episodes of something and decided to stop then thats a good reason to rate it lower than shows you liked enough to watch in my opinion.
I didn't watch the Shield so didn't rate it because I didn't want to bury it under mediocre stuff I thought was ok (i effectively did because voting for 4 shows has the same effect as 5)

Well, couple of reasons at least. If it is tactical voting then 5,0,0,0,0 would be terrible system, giving +20 against alternatives, instead of maximum of +10 now. Or if they have only seen 1 of the shows, then obviously their votes should count for less than someone's who has seen multiple shows. I mean maybe they thought that show was avarage or even terrible but it just happens to be the only 1 they watched.

At the moment if someone isn't listing all 5 shows, then I would assume they haven't watched all 5, nor are they tactically voting, so the system is working just fine.

The Americans in last place is shameful.

Is it really that good? It mainly piggybacked on the success of saving private Ryan but on a lower scale. The most memorable element for me was the veterans describing what it was like to live through. Without that I don't think I would've bawled like a baby. The production values are premier league of course but I think it's legendary status is more down to the nature of the story they're telling. I also think breaking bad is a tad overrated though so what dafuq do I know.

Yeah it's phenomenal imo. Saving Private Ryan had good elements but it was still at it's heart a typical action film with a comfortable structure.

BoB feels more like you're watching a documentary in a way. You've got this unique insight into how it really was for these men. The acting is brilliant, and the way they interact with each other paired with hearing from the real life soldiers at the end just connects you to these 'characters' in a way other shows can't imo.

Combine that with the fact that there's always this underlying dread of something bad happening and it's just very real. I'm still haunted by the Bastogne episode.

Band of Brothers is a fine series, but I don't get how so many people consider it the best series ever. It's a very typical Hollywood story in my opinion, albeit well-paced, well-acted and with a high production value. A counter-argument to the lack of "depth" is that it's a real story about real people. But that's not the viewers' fault. The creators picked these stories and chose how to portray them.

But that's just my personal opinion. I prefer anti-war media that don't focus so much on heroism. I still like Band of Brothers and I agree that the Bastogne episode is excellent.

Ah, a Come And See connoisseur. Fine taste sir.

Good one! Grave of the Fireflies another good one. Recency bias may have gotten the better of me here, but I actually think All Quiet On The Western Front has a shout for being the best anti-war film.

I also enjoy Full Metal Jacket, The Wind Rises and Dunkirk for various reasons. What they all have in common is that the heroism and "glory" of war never takes much focus. You could argue that Dunkirk partly does this, but the best part of the film for me is how it's almost edited like a horror film at times.

Oooo, Joint Security Area is also good! Not sure if it counts as a war film, but North Korea and South Korea are technically at war so...

Yes I have. I wouldn't rank it higher than 3rd, guess I put it 4th because of recency bias.

I established that much  Just wondered why you didn't rate it compared to the others?

Boo to x files getting knocked out

It's a conspiracy. I demand a recount!

I haven't seen Band of Brothers for more than 10 years so I'm due a re-watch. I've watched The Pacific a couple of times since then, which isn't as good, but is underrated in my opinion. It also has arguably the best opening credits out of anything I've seen.

And what will happen after you watch them? Nothing.

Why do you watch films? Do you find it to be only a waste of time?

You can watch thousands of films in your lifetime and still have a more productive, meaningful and varied lifestyle than 90% of people. Think about all the mindless zapping and scrolling people do without even having fun.

Obviously.

Do you feel the same about books? Theatre? Musicals? Concerts? Football? Sorry if you were just being sarcastic. I'm bad at picking up on sarcasm online.

I have actually met some people who never seem to enjoy any form of entertainment for entertainment's sake. They are either hyper-productive and ambitious kind or extreme extroverts who can't be alone for 2 minutes.

They won't post almost 50.000 messages on the caf though :D

That said, I hardly watch that many movies or series anymore myself.

S01 True Detective is the best TV show I have seen. Growing up, Seinfeld was always a good laugh. Band of Brothers didn't make much of an impression on me though I was also young at the time and probably just watched it for the action.

Theatres Musicals and football sucks. Concerts are awesome.

Agreed. Season 1 was mesmerizing, captivating. Season 2 was like a spoof on the genre, woefully written, thin as feck plot, and featured some of the worst acting outside of department store mannequins. I don't know how TD can make this list when literally half of it is garbage.

Band Of Brothers also had David Schwimmer in it almost singlehandedly ruining it. Also Neal McDonough is in it, and that guy is a cnut. I had some personal interactions with him that made me want to punch him.

I feel it's easier to ignore the latter seasons with it being an anthology series, compared to series where the initial premise is being mudded over time (Game of Thrones, Dexter etc.).

Season 3 was a bit better to be fair. Or better received at least.
I'd feel worse giving it a high vote in a different list but Band of Brothers is only one season and I'm voting blackadder almost exclusively for its last season (others were good but that last season is basically perfection). It'll probably stand against all 3 in later rounds though.

David Schwimners brilliant in it. To go from his character in friends to be a horribly dislikeable person in BoB is great. Also love how the troops recognise that he was responsible for Easy Company surviving as it did despite being relieved that he didn't get close to commanding them. "Salute the rank, not the person". Damn Dick was savage.
