Music RedCafe's Favourite Albums Of All Time Contest (Round 6)

I know everyone laughs at my lists but I think my list this time is really good. August Alsina debut album was an excellent RnB album that wasn't focused on chasing a girl or whatever, with loads of hiphop influences.

Here's the opening track to get a flavour, I really like this song.

Don't know why, but pop or rnb like that just makes me feel nothing. I get nothing from it. Speaks to the fact we are all different people!

1. Radiohead - A Moon Shaped Pool
2. Arcade Fire - Reflektor
3. Angel Olsen - My Woman
4. Julia Holter - Have you in my Wilderness
5. Mitski - Be the Cowboy

Honorable mention:
Antony and the Johnsons Swanlights
Tim Hecker Ravedeath 1972
Parquet Courts Wide Awake!!!
Kate Bush 50 Words for Snow
Perfume Genius No Shape
Vampire Weekend Modern Vampires of the city
Jon Hopkins Singularity
Arcade Fire The Suburbs
Max Richter Sleep
Current 93 The Light is Leaving Us All

Never knew Linkin Park was so popular. They're so bad. I liked them when I was about 12, and they were a good gateway to what followed. But genuinely didn't think people would listen to them now. Chester did have a good voice.

Last decade was so hard i kept coming back to it and forgot to vote. This one is probably harder.

I'm probably missing loads but off the top of my head -

Modern Vampires of the City - Vampire Weekend
(II) - Crystal Castles
Grievances - Rolo Tomassi
Singularity - Jon Hopkins
the Suburbs - Arcade Fire

Also amazing -

Melodrama - Lorde
Time will die and love will Bury it - Rolo Tomassi
Sunbather - Deafheaven
RTJ2 - Run the Jewels
I See You - The Xx
AIA Alien Observer - Grouper
So many...

Great list - love those Vampire Weekend, Jon Hopkins and Arcade Fire albums.

Fantastic album, was between this and The Murder Capital for 5th on my list

Maybe it's to do with what music you grew up with. Mine definitely makes sense when you think of it through that lens.

Grew up with only access to radio music hence why I like stuff like Backstreet Boys, Craig David etc.

In high school everyone in my school loved RnB and hiphop so that's why I'm into that sort of music.

In college, my friends and I started getting into rock, Linkin Park was a nice transition from hiphop.

And as I got older, I started getting into indie rock, that's where my love for Arctic Monkeys came from.

I'm not hugely into music though which is probably why I only stuck to surface level stuff rather than digging into genres.

Great now I have to delete that from my YouTube history to protect my algorithm.

In all seriousness I'm with alto. Get absolutely nothing from that. Feels like a very 'of it's time' type of song in the vein of NeYo, Omarion, Ginuwine, etc.. that is something most people go 'oh remember this song' when they're feeling nostalgic but never actually stands the test of time.

Also not sure how you can love R&B so much and not love Channel Orange or Blonde.

I remember loving I Am A Bird now back in the mid 2000s. I'm guessing MBWABFYTC gets in your next one?

We both have this, I might even move it higher after I listen back to my top 5 later in the week....

Do you have bad taste or is my taste getting better?
The latter! It’s a record like The Beatles would have made, not that they sound anything like The Beatles. But AM just said : we have mastered the guitar-based pop song in all its forms; this new album basically won’t have any at all. For a band to so thoroughly not care what their fans wanted — and then pull off their best, most lyrically successful album — is incredible. Just like The Beatles did whatever the hell they wanted and basically shat out brilliant pop songs with minimal effort, that’s what the AMs did on this. I think the album represents lyrically how bored Alex was with being in the AMs in the first place, or at least how bored he was with constantly trying to stay hot and relevant; this album is him stepping off the merry-go-round. I feel like this is their first authentic album, the first one that couldn’t have been done by any other English pop band. Maybe the lounge singer persona is fake too, but if you look through his evolution from Tom Baker (even wore scarves!) to indie rocker, to desert greaser, he’s never been comfortable with himself. This record he finally decided to not “prove” anything.

I even bought this one on vinyl!

Ah, a man of culture.

1. My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy - Kanye West
2. High Violet - The National
3. An Awesome Wave - ∆
4. Lost in the Dream - The War on Drugs
5. Spiritual Songs for Lovers to Sing - Lost Under Heaven

Hon. Mentions:
The Suburbs - Arcade Fire
Hurry Up, We're Dreaming - M83
If You Wait - London Grammar
That LUH record was in constant —CONSTANT—rotation for months over here.

People picking Tranquility Base over AM? I like both but it’s very divisive so I’m surprised to see it high on one or two lists. Also I’ve seen Bruno Mars name twice already which has shaken me to my core.
I have to assume they are just taking the piss. That’s almost like saying their favorite song is the Burger King commercial music. Yuck.

1. Royal Blood - Royal Blood
2. Norman Fecking Rockwell! - Lana Del Ray
3. Prequelle - Ghost
4. The Suburbs - Arcade Fire
5. AM - Arctic Monkeys

  1. Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds- Ghosteen
  2. Iggy Pop- Post Pop Depression
  3. Low Roar- Once in a long long while
  4. NOFX- First Ditch Effort
  5. Leonard Cohen- You want it darker

...damn, I should really lighten up a bit.

I've heard so many good things about Lana and tried to get into her music multiple times but it all just sounds so samey to me. Usually after a few listens I start to pick up on little bits but it has consistently just sounded like a load of watered down Bond tracks whenever I've tried.

Why did I have the impression that hobbers was cool

Where those swifties at?
Taylor Swift is much more of a song artist than an album artist, just like most pop artists. Something like 1989 has some fantastic pop songs (Style, Blank Space, I Know Places), but also has songs like the opening track or Bad Blood. I think Folkmore are the best albums she has made as they are much more consistently good.

With Lana I'd say you fairly quickly will know if you like it or not. Listen to the song Born to Die, if you like it chances are you are gonna like a lot of her stuff, otherwise I'd say you're probably not going to like it.

Yeah think it's just not for me. I've been listening to a lot of stuff that's passed me by over the years because I know there's gonna be stuff I've missed and will enjoy.

Like I always have the thought that there are so many songs out there that I could absolutely love but just will never hear for one reason or another. That annoys me  So many songs/artists I've discovered I think I found through quite a niche avenue that if I'd have missed that post, or tweet or whatever, would just never have heard.

It probably won't, actually. It's very good, but I don't like it quite as much as Swanlights, to say nothing of The Crying Light.

@weetee , I’m the same. Love Swift but she only puts 4 or 5 good songs on an album. The cumulative effect is great though . In that respect she’s like Weezer - amazing catalog, awesome live, individual records kinda meh.

It is very samey but still some of it is great. I like Lust For Life, Ultraviolence album, Born To Die, Young And Beautiful, Pretty When You Cry, Cola, Summertime Sadness, fecked My Way Up To The Top, West Coast, High By The Beach, God Knows I Tried, White Mustang, Heroin, Born To Die, National Anthem, Mariners Apartment Complex, Love Song, Doin' Time, some others.

It's all supposed to be over the top and dramatic with her. She's playing a character, so you have to buy into the crazy bitch who will kill you because she loves you, but then will go feck a bar full of biker dudes (as seen in her videos). All that aside, I haven't spent any time listening to her most recent 3 albums.

It is samey stylistically, but also oddly variable in quality. Some of them barely register, but the best ones I find really, really strong. Especially her last one (Tunnel under Ocean blvd). That will figure among my 20s selections for sure.

  1. Lonerism - Tame Impala
  2. Teen Dream - Beach House
  3. The Suburbs - Arcade Fire
  4. Hurry Up We're Dreaming - M83
  5. Kaputt - Destroyer

Some artists are like that. No reason to keep listening to soemthing you don't enjoy. Too much good stuff to discover out there to do so.

Yeah, there are so many good songs one will never hear. I just try to do my best to register whenever I like a song that I haven't myself put on (whether through Spotify radio, from a movie, on the radio or wherever) and try to look it up afterwards. Sometimes it leads me to find artists I really enjoy and sometimes it turns out that it might just have been the context I listened to it that made me like the song.

1. To Pimp a Butterfly (Kendrick Lamar)
2. Currents (Tame Impala)
3. An Awesome Wave (Alt-J)
4. The Suburbs (Arcade Fire)
5. My Love is Cool (Wolf Alice)

Honourable mentions:

Random Access Memories (Daft Punk)
Lonerism (Tame Impala)
This is Happening (LCD Soundsystem)
Visions (Grimes)
AM (Arctic Monkeys)

I really like Blonde (haven't heard the other) but not enough to crack my top 5.

If it helps the 10s was a music wasteland for me and I dont even like any of the albums I listed.

Our top 5 picks always have crossover. Meaning that you're a loser

Really showing my age here or just how my listening habits have completely shifted to playlists from Spotify as opposed to CDs, tapes, vinyl. I can't even think of 5 albums I listened to from the 2010s

  1. Random Across Memories - Daft Punk
  2. - 5. will have to google or take bribes to put in someone else's pick

Just give the rest to Taylor Swift. She deserves it.

Feel tempted to add Daft Punk RAM but don't know which album to get rid of. Listening to it now, it's so good.

This round really makes me feel old I can hardly recognize an album.

Your knowledge across musical genres is starting to really impress me.

What's your opinion on Sonder Son by Brent Faiyaz?

same, stopped listening to albums released in that era completely and rather embraced digging up niche stuff in the internet. I remember liking Kool Keith‘s Feature Magnetic at the time and some re-releases from cold wave 80s stuff.

World on Fire (Stick Figure)
Every Day Life, Every Day People (Slightly Stoopid)
From Here To Now To You (Jack Johnson)
Stereolithic (311)
Showroom of Compassion (Cake)

Wanda - Amore
Taylor Swift - Red
Green Day - Revolution Radio
Adele - 21
Alkaline Trio - This Addiction
This is the list of a man who is not afraid to show his sensitive side, and, if necessary, cry. You're all right in my book, hellhunter, I don't care what @Dirty Schwein says about you.

The only Alkaline Trio record I keep coming back to is From Here To Infirmary, what do you think of that one?
