Real Madrid vs Manchester United

Great position to be in with Madrid having a couple of games with Barcelona before the next leg aswell.

The ref was just bad, not biased. The two yellows for Valencia and that Dutchman you've got were beyond a joke. Ridiculous.

Surprised at the post match observations seeming to ignore that Ferdinand was by far and away the best defender on that pitch tonight. Ramos was obviously awful, Varane still a little raw, and Evans, whilst having a decent game, wasn't on the same level as Rio. Great display, and basically earned you the draw.

Less impressed with Jones - yes, he was told to track back and do the donkey work but when he had possession, he just looked so average with the ball. You can't fault his defensive work, but I still think for £16m he should show more actual ability. I'll get slaughtered for that one, but there you go.

The media's rewriting of the De Gea myth is now starting to get rather amusing as well. He's always been good at shot stopping - exceptional in fact - but it's being commanding from corners and other set pieces that has always been his problem. Sky normally harp on about that for hours but tonight they've decided that they're going to stop and concentrate on the saves instead of slaughtering him. Probably about time.

But he did let whacky Phil Jones get away with murder in the first half, and ignored an obvious penalty on him as well. Shit reffing on the whole.

Nothing obvious about it at all. It would have been the softest of pens. You really took away from that game that Jones was the dirtiest player on the pitch?

Madrid did not get a single booking yet rvp and rafeal got booked first foul.

Red card for Varane and red for elbow for ramos surely count as having an influence. You have already contridicted yourself so I suppose that's moot.

not really. Didn't say Varane should have got a red card...and if Ramos should have then Evans should have as well.

Also, Uniteds goal comes from a corner that didn't exist... and Di Maria should maybe have got a penalty...and RVP maybe a red card for two hand balls (although I would argue this would have been very unfair)..JOnes should have got a card for the 10000 fouls in the first half...

All Im saying is that imo he didn't influence the result of the game

Varanae was immense, especially for a teenager and basically defended on his own except for the others fouling. The other back three should have been booked or sent off. Give, e the balancing acts.

He was a homer, it happens. Hopefully it happens in the return leg cause we will need it with their counter attack.

Not from me, it's a fair comment. But I think a lot of that fee was about poaching the talent and compensating for that fact.

Did you see Souness say Jones, Carrick and Kagawa vs Alonso Kiedira and Ozil was a mismatch?

I'm not going to lie and say that we have the best midfield in the World right now, but that's a bit harsh. Jones was brilliant, Carrick was Mr reliable and Kagawa, whilst he faded, was quite lively.

Good post. Ferdinand was bloody brilliant.

Jones wasn't great in possession - but then again he rarely is. He did the job asked of him very well on the day.

Load of shit.

Yep. If a carthorse like Jones is our best option in the center......?

My thoughts:

Really happy with the result
De Gea was my MOM
Played better in the 2nd half
Ramos is a cnut
Ref was absolute shit.

We'll do them in the 2nd leg. Come on United

Was getting pretty nervous at the end, one of those where although you're slightly disappointed that we couldn't take one of the gilt edge chances we had at the same you know you rode your luck at times as well, I'd have taken a 1-1 draw at the start of the night.

It was a weird one for us though, I appreciated why we played the way we did and you have to say Jones did contribute defensively but at the same time it was clear that whenever we did get the ball down and play we could cut them open pretty easily. Like I said Jones did well defensively but I think in possession he inhibited us as he doesn't have the same movement as say a cleverley and so doesn't give the defenders as many options, with Madrid being tight on Carrick it restricted the outball.

That said it's highly unlikely clev would have gotten in to the same defensive positions as Jones, plus he was useful at set pieces too.

I think though, if we are going with Jones we should fit Nani in somewhere. I think we need a bit more pace on the counter and someone who will run at defenders. I thought Valencia was average when he came on.

Welbeck was terrific, got everything he needs to be a top player, De Gea had a few flaps but made some top saves, Rio and Evans were solid, RVP will know he should have scored 1 and lord knows what Giggs was doing with his chance. Thought Carrick was effective, it was tough for him as with Jones playing more as an auxiliary defender and Kagawa in and out of the game he was quite isolated in the middle, he grew in to the game.

All in all I think we've got a great chance at OT, especially if they have to stick with that keeper, definitely think we can expose him more. Also reckon Hernandez will be a great shout as Real were constantly done by the ball over the top.

Good post alastair. Agreed with all of it.

Absolutely agree with Alastair's post. And as I'm drunk, I'm glad someone phrased it for me.

Ferdinand was immense in the game, I loved De Gea's performance especially second half, I thought Rooney worked like a Trojan and was very impressed by Rafael. Jones was very good in his defensive duties but needs to be better with the ball. Van Persie should've killed the tie with that double chance, tough luck. Loved Giggs' entrance, that combo of the tackle on Özil and then going round the player, pure sex. Shame he couldn't bury the chance at the end.

On the whole, good performance by the team, especially a great second half defensive performance with good counter attacking. I'm pretty confident we can finish them off at OT now, they were actually pretty good tonight but still couldn't manage to find that goal.

And I'm out.

Wow, what a incredible game of football and it never disappointed considering all the hype around the game.

No doubt Fergie will have wanted an away goal and we got it, so job done for this leg and a huge bonus we came away with a draw, but we had chances (especially the RVP miss) to finish them off and get the win.

It was always inevitable Ronaldo would score against us but it was a fantastic header from him. Credit to him for showing class by not celebrating against us, but he said he wouldn't, so most expected him to not do so.

Plenty of good performances tonight from the team and De Gea was just outstanding and definitely my man of the match.

Can't wait for the 2nd leg and hopefully we see a good performance from the team and reach the next round.

I think Mourinho fecked it up in the second half. I don't know why Ronnie wasn't allowed to keep on tearing Rafa to bits, but I'm glad he was told to swap wings. Ronnie was really their only danger and with him being kept quiet in the second half, we were fairly comfortable.

Can't grumble with that result, I think they were the better team on the night but we had 4 good chances on the break in the 2nd half. Rio, De Gea and Welbeck were all excellent and I thought Rafael recovered well in the 2nd half after a difficult first half.

We are now slightly favourites going into the second leg but I agree with RVP, teams on this level make it too close to call, the main thing for the 2nd leg is too control the game better when we have the ball, I felt we rushed it too often tonight.

It feels like we set up in the first half with the aim of staying central but having enough threat to get the away goal. When we got it so early, it would've been dangerous for SAF to try and initiate a tactical change from the sidelines for 25 minutes so we had to hang on a bit with a formation that wasn't designed to defend a lead.

Once we restructures ourselves to provide greater protection from wide areas we looked much more comfortable and it forced Ronaldo to go searching for the ball. It did mean that we were relying on breakaways more but I thought the second half was a very good, typical away, European performance from us.

The players will be pleased and confidence remains high. A nice break now as well to recharge before a few games that should see us progress in the cup and extend our lead (maybe) whilst keeping players fresh for the 2nd leg.

Am I the only one that believes the ref should be the same for both legs of any two-legged tie?

I thought he was clearly a 'homer' - influenced by the crowd. That's fine, happens, it's to Madrid's advantage in this case. But then he should have come to OT too, so the officiating is consistent in both.

Can't understand the logic of having such an important part of the matches different in the two legs.
