Real Madrid vs Manchester United

No offense to you IL, but why are you so desperate to start a matchday thread that you do such a shitty job of it?

Yup, bit of a shite thread for such an important match, sort it out lad! ;)

So pumped for this game, think we can nick it by a goal if our defence stays solid. As others have mentioned, just having a player like RVP in our team makes me much more confident about getting past Madrid.

Sort of, because that would lead to a great tie at OT. As far as I'm concerned, we should be supporting each other for the sake of England's coefficient which is going to drop like a stone if we don't get anyone past the R16.

I think the Premier League should be good for a few years. No way Italy or France overtakes England in the standings so soon. At worst, Germany and Spain top England, which would still guarantee 4 places.

de Gea

Rafael
Ferdinand
Vidic/Evans
Evra

Valencia
Carrick
Cleverley
Kagawa

Rooney
van Persie

SUBS: Lindegaard, Smalling, Jones, Anderson, Nani, Welbeck, Hernandez.

I think Valencia's performance today ensured he'll start again. Maybe tough on Nani but he doesn't offer enough protection on the right hand side.

We will defeat these cnuts.

Reckon, we could see this:

De Gea
Rafael - Ferdinand - Vidic - Evra
Carrick - Jones
Cleverley
Rooney - Kagawa
van Persie

I'm living for this now!

Going into this after our performance today makes me all the more confident. Vidic and Rafa will be key.

I will be happy with a 1-1 draw but I think we see a few goals at the Bernabeu.

Really surprised some people are going for Evans over Vidic... The organization and confidence Vida brings to our defence is something neither Rio or Evans have. Just looking at our defensive performances this season, you can see the stark contrast between our defence without Vidic and our defence with Vidic. He's a must start for me. Only debatable positions IMO are Carrick's midfield partner and the wings. The rest should pick itself.

Only 1 of the sides posted here, has had Vidic out so far, tbf from Anduin.

Think he should start but don't get why Evans came off today earlier.

So what's Vato's opinion on this?

Can go either way, I'm excited but nervous at the same time. Hope we don't concede at home but it will be very difficult considering our form this season.

Whatever happens I hope we play two ties to remember.

This. All day long.

That front four together would be frightening. I could definitely see us scoring at the Bernabeu with that team. However, I think Fergie will err on the side of caution, as he tends to do in these big European games. After all, you can't win the tie in the first leg, but you can lose it.

Technically you can't win nor lose it but we virtually won the Schalke tie at the Veltins Arena two years ago.

After the return of Kagawa and Nani, I had a feeling that Nani will be on the right for this one. And One out of Welbeck or Kagawa will be on the left. I am a big Nani fan and I feel he his performances have been encouraging. But I still feel Kagawa and Welbeck should both start ahead of him.

Certainly. We need the first goal to avoid any kind of snowballing in general.

I just can't see us leaving Rafa alone against Ronaldo. Especially at the Bernabaeu.

We changed the system against Bale for the away game after he troubled Rafa and Rio at OT, so can't see us going all gung ho against Ronaldo.

I'm expecting one of Cleverley/Valencia/Jones to start in front of him on the right in a 4-4-1-1 or a 4-3-3.

Yeah, meant from the beating Madrid thread there were a decent amount of people saying Evans should start because of his pace or something. He's a good defender don't get me wrong, he's just nowhere near the level of Vidic and Rio as a partnership yet.

People thinking we're gonna smash RM are dreaming, frankly.

It's going to be tight - it's going to be cagey. We just need an away goal.

This is the team I want to see, but also could be recipe for disaster leaving Rafael alone against Cristiano.... :nervous:

We stop him we stop Madrid...

You're going down suckers!!!

You're right, that feels good.

What side do you think would be United's strongest for this tie? As in what would you be most fearful of? Be interested to hear what the opposition thinks is our best combination between a diamond/wingers or Welbeck/Nani/Kagawa/Valencia on the wings.

I think the team will be

Rafael----Rio------Vidic----Evra
---------------Carrick
----Jones----Cleverley--Anderson
-----------------Rooney
-------------------RVP

Would love to see either:

DDG
Rafael Evans Vidic Evra
Carrick Cleverley
Nani Rooney Kagawa
RVP

or the slightly more solid but still appealing:

DDG
Rafael Evans Vidic Evra
Anderson Carrick Cleverley
Nani Rooney
RVP

Forgive my selection of Evans over Rio. I'm verging on becoming an Evans fanboy these days, and I can't get the memory of his massive performance for NI against Portugal - in which he was part of a defence that nullified Ronaldo - out of my head. But I really don't care either way, Rio is great too. Vidic has to play after such a good performance today against such a challenging front two.

Very calm about this match. Hoping for a memorable tie and some good football. It's actually quite a respite from the nerves of the PL matches!

I've always thought that this could be our best team (and still believe it will be). However, Evans being subbed off instead of Vidic and Nani rested could point towards them replacing the players currently in their positions. Kagawa is also probably not guaranteed to start, it could be Valencia and Nani, for example. Or, we could play Rooney on the left and go with Anderson as part of a midfield three.

It's even harder to think who will be left out entirely... If it was the above line up, we'd have Jones, Smalling, Evans, Giggs, Anderson, Nani, Hernandez, and Welbeck fighting for the six places on the bench. Smalling is probably the easiest to leave out, while Giggs played the full 90 and Jones took a knock, so they could be left out. But I'd always fancy Giggs to be able to come on for 20-30 minutes and make something happen against any team.

I don't see Fergie trusting Nani to play in this game. I see this lineup but with Valencia or even Welbeck on the right.

Yep, the relatively low expectations from the competition as a whole means we can relax and enjoy the match a bit, whereas every PL game against the bottom-feeders like QPR is a nail-biting nightmare.

"He got a kick in the calf and we'll have to monitor it," Sir Alex told MUTV.

Jones was replaced in the 56th minute by Michael Carrick, who was taking a well-earned break from the starting eleven. United's other substitution in the match was also enforced, as Chris Smalling came on for Jonny Evans at centre-back for the last nine minutes plus injury time.

"Jonny Evans had a bit of cramp," reported Sir Alex. "I think he's just lacked a couple of games. He only had forty-five minutes for Northern Ireland in midweek. He had to travel to Malta for that. We'll see what he's like tomorrow."

The manager admitted he was relishing the Real Madrid match and another chance to pit his wits against Jose Mourinho, a spectator at Old Trafford on Sunday.

"I had a chat with Jose before the game, he was in good form," said Sir Alex. "We're both looking forward to the game on Wednesday. It'll be terrific."

Leaving Nani out today seemed odd, as it seemed to imply Nani will now start against Madrid.

But surely Valencia is essential to team up with Rafael to offer defensive strength and pace down Ronaldo's side.

Most of the team will pick itself but who alongside Rio is decision 1, with who on the left flank the other.

Nani on the left to take on Arbeloa who has been dodgy this season ?

Think Valencia could have started today anyway, as Baines is one of Everton's main attacking weapons.
