Real Madrid opens the door for Diarra, Lass Diarra, Gago and Van Der Vaart.

We buy players we want, no simply because they want to play for us. We'd have gone for VDV by now, if we wanted him.

As for central midfielders, I'm starting to wonder if Hargeaves is ever going to come back the same, if at all. I can't say I know a lot about the Diarras, but anyone who can help bolster our midfield, especially a ball-winner, would be welcome.

if gibson is going out, and good lord knows when hargreaves will be back, there should be spot for someone else to come in, hopefully van der vaart the one.

Current news from the bargain basement. Basically assume that the Spanish players + Higuain / Ronaldo / Pepe / Kaka aren't for sale and everyone else is (at the right price). Madrid have to get rid of one player (25 man limit) and want to lose two more. So, according to the current gossip -

Drenthe can go if they can get a replacement.
Lass - Mourinho likes him, says he can play in defence if they get injuries as well as in midfield- so it would need to be a good deal
Diarra - no one sees a future for him at Madrid
Gago - he thinks he's staying
VdV - says he wants to stay and fight for a place, but I think he'll be gone for the right bid
Benzema - Mourinho spent the first two weeks of pre-season trying to coax some life into him, and it looked like it might work (somebody actually saw him smile) then Higuain and Ronaldo came back to work and Jose lost interest in him

In terms of who/what they're rumoured to be still interested in - they'd still like another defender (maybe as part of a swap deal) - Marca claims Mourinho wants a #9, but again that's probably only on the cards if there's a swap deal or a very rapid chain of deals, that release Benzema.

Why would they let go of Benzema. He's supposedly one of the most talented young strikers around, and has had only one season in Spain. Besides, he and Higuin are their only strikers.

Real are apparently trying to sign Fernando Llorente from Bilbao and that yesterday angered the Bilbao coach on a press conference that ended up with him doing a mini rant and joking about buying Xabi Alonso:D

I don't know how much is gossip and how much is ridiculous over-extrapolation of a few comments Mourinho made.

He just may not get that many games and he doesn't really help them vary their play by much - at the moment he looks similar to Higuain but with more ability outside the box and less ability inside it.

So when Mourinho started talking about a #9 as an option, people heard that as "not Benzema." Which is fair comment. The nearest player they've got to a #9 is if they push Ronaldo forward and he says himself that he doesn't really know how to play that position.

If Real are looking to add another striker doesn't mean they will sell Benzema.. They have only 2 strikers.. I know they play only 1 up top but incase 1 or both get injured/suspended they will only have Ronaldo and youth players to stick up front..

Didn't he say we woulndt be buying anyone right before we signed Bay Bay?

No. He said he his happy with the current squad and doesn't see players that he can buy for the prices that would be that much better than what he has now.

People confuse those comments by him as a way of him saying they absolutely won't buy anyone period. By now we all know that United is always looking, all clubs are - unless it's a free - the players they are looking at can only be transfered during the transfer window.

Till the transfer window closes, there is always a chance that they may decide to get someone. Even today he didn't say absolutely no more, he said he doesn't think they'll do any more business.

So (allegedly) another smack round the head for Benzema this week.

Summarising:
Last week, he got a lecture from Mourinho telling him that if he couldn't score then the least he could do was run into the right positions to score.

This week, another "pep talk" - roughly translated (in the spirit): You're asleep when you get here at 10, you're still asleep at 11. Do you think we should start training at 12?

Marca.com

Not really hearing the love there.

Seems like Jose has found his "Balotelli" at Real:D

Why have you posted that here?

Do people still actually want us to sign him?

Yep, despite the fact that we have around 5 very talented young strikers, people still want us to add Benzema to our ranks.

I'm personally ecstatic about what's going on with him and Madrid, he made such a great choice choosing Real over us. I remember when he first signed for them, he said that his priority would be to make France's world cup squad.

It seems we may have dodged a bullet with him anyway.

Why have you posted that here?

Because I felt like it.

Do people still actually want us to sign him?

Not me, but is anyone expecting/wanting us to sign Aquilani, Gallas, Boateng, Remy, Schwarzer, Kuyt etc? The transfer forum would be a lot smaller if it was just United gossip was in here.

He's a quality player to have in the squad, but he moans like a pig if rested for 1-2 games.

That's the problem. I think he's a good player but reality is he won't play week in week out so is it really worth the potential unrest he could create? I would say no.

He's been rejected by Chelsea, Arsenal and Real, I very much doubt you want sloppy fourths.

Exactly the player we need. All top clubs have a holding midfield player, especially in the big european ties.

He is for me, one of the best about. He's also be probably reasonably priced.

Lass is a shit player tbh.One of the dumbest DM I've ever seen, sure he can recover the ball and all but the amount of stupid fouls and yellow cards he collects says everything about him.

If you mean charging about like a headless chicken on steroids, then yes, he's what we need.

He's been better this season than last because he no longer has the burden of being the only midfielder with defensive responsibilities, but he is not what we need by any stretch. He's probably the only holding midfielder I can think of who would make the team more nervous - because he gives away so many silly fouls.

So why do you think he's struggled to hold down a place at Chelsea, Arsenal and Madrid?

Carrick does an excellent job of being our holding midfielder player anyway, does he not? Especially in the big games - Arsenal being a good recent example.

You over rate him hugely.

Also, we seem to have done alright without a "holding midfield player" in the past.

Carrick plays that role very well, he just doesn't get noticed for it as much because he doesn't go crashing into challenges left right and centre.

He'd give us some cover in midfield and also cover at full back. Not saying we need him but if he was going for cheap, he'd be a useful addition and pretty much be there for what Hargreaves was suppose to do.

Well Madrid have let players go recently and they have gone on to better things. Sneidjer, van der vaar, Huntelaar and even Raul have been great. No doubt if any of the players like Gago, Diarras moved on they would make a difference too.

l diarra is a decent player but he'll complain about getting matches and we don't need to upset the squad harmony. if he wasn't an arse about getting matches, then he'd be a decent addition.

Yeah he'd have to be the only player to play for Madrid, United, Portsmouth Arsenal, and Chelsea. Impressive resume belies that he wouldn't improve the squad at all, and as has been mentioned has complained about it when he wasnt in the first XI at places like Arsenal and Chelsea.

I doubt there is a shred of truth in this even though I rate Diarra highly. I think his agent has created this story to stir up interest with other clubs. I think Fergie would prefer to get more value for money and go for youth with someone like Rodwell. Diarra would more than do a job here and I am sure he is a lot more mature as a person and a player since he last played in England. In fariness to him, he never got a look in at Arsenal or Chelsea as its rare for a talented defensive midfielder to break into a team like that at a young age

He hasn't really been rejected. He's just always been a bench player for them and then moans that he doesn't get to play and leaves.
Was good for Portsmouth before he decided to go to Madrid.

He's got no business in a top team where he can't hold a spot. Could go to Tottenham as he is better than Palacios.
