Real Madrid need to get ready for a terrible season | It’s happening

You won 4 of the last 5 Champions Leagues despite not having enough quality to pull off a feat like that. I don't believe I'll ever see a team do something like that again, it was incredible what those players achieved.

I'm not saying those are crap players, just that a lot of them are overrated because of what they achieved, their reputation comes from their trophy cabinet rather than what they show on the pitch.

Forget this season, what club had a better squad over the same time period?

Let's not rewrite history now. Their squad in 2016-2017 was insane. Their back-ups were essentially winning La Liga while the first XI won the CL.

They just don't accept mediocrity. Team is not performing and it's shaping to be a bad season = you are out. What we do instead? Delay the inevitable by haggling over a few million for compensation and wait until our season is officially fecked. And unlike La Liga where you will finish 4th at worst, we finish out of TOP 4, miss next year's CL and a huge amount of money due to it.
Agree with this. It might not be pleasant or romantic but it's necessary.

If you have a problem, you fix it. Not doing so has been one of our major failings these past five years.

Fans who want to avoid firing a manager out of some fake tradition don't have the club's interests at heart.

They still only just won the league by 1 point in 2016-17 and that was a matter of having a great squad with many great options rather than the first team players being historically great.

In terms of the individual quality of their starters they were far behind Pep's Barcelona for example, despite achieving more.

If Messi was fit it would have been 8-1

Sad thing is, they’d still beat United comfortably home or away on their current form

I half agree with this. I think they're doing it because they feel like they have to. SAF made it pretty clear in his farewell speech at OT that he viewed the fan's job as supporting managers, not hounding them out. Many fans follow that advice.

That said, SAF wasn't a great manager because he was kept at United for so long. He was kept there for so long because he was so good. Moyes could have been given 5 years, I still don't think we'd have ever seriously challenged for the title. At the point that becomes obvious, the manager has to go because winning is a more important tradition that long serving managers.

I didn't think they'd be this bad, but I thought they would have signed a galactico to replace Ronaldo.

Really bad summer from them. Lope has got to go ASAP.

Amazingly, it just speaks volumes to how incredible SAF was that without Ronaldo the following season, we still challenged for the Prem(and probably win were it not for Rooney's injury).

It is amazing to think that Real Madrid didn't replace arguably the most important player in the world. Normally I'd dismiss the idea that Perez just wants Neymar next year but it's the only explanation imo.

And yet we won 4 of the last 5 CL???? you don't make any sense.
Heh, he's talking about last season i guess. He's got a point, we were pretty rubbish last season. Absolutely everything went our way. I mean, between Karius and Bayern's metamorphosis into Spurs...
Edit: he wasn't nevermind

Guess this season might actually be karma

We were lucky in some games but you always need some kind of luck to win a title like a CL a World Cup or whatever imo. I'm pretty mad at Perez though, it's gonna be really difficult now to recruit with all the clubs knowing we are desperately looking for a striker and a good winger, now we are stuck with Lucas Vasquez Benzema and Mariano..

Why would he leave Chelsea for Bayern? Real is the only team he would leave us for.
Hey, let me dream. :wenger: Wanted him for Bayern even back when you guys signed him. He‘d have been a perfect Ribéry replacement.
I agree that I only see him leaving for Real, but his chances at silverware are better at Bayern than they are at Chelsea.

It wasn't rocket science. Either they had to wait one more summer for Neymar. Or they just fecked up despite £200m+ easily-ish getting them one of Hazard/Salah/Kane.

Or, and this is my theory, the Spanish economy is so fecked that tax payers' money (shock horror) had to be used elsewhere. Who the feck sells Ronaldo unless there were some troubling scenes in the background?

Either way my heart bleeds for the feckers.

Ronaldo wanted a pretty hefty pay raise which he reportedly got from Juventus, that might be all there is to it.

When has Real never paid what was needed? (The clue is in my post above)

The crisis really began in 2009, and coincided with the signings of Cristiano, Kaka and Karim. Now the economic situation is better. I'm sure the king could have paid the contract improvement.

I'm sure they could have covered it financially, maybe they thought it was too much? Knowing Ronaldo, he probably requested a couple of years extension on top, which might have left the club paying 1.2M per week to a 37 year old player say in 2022?

Pep’s Barca team >>>> Zidane’s teams

I do think Zidane’s teams overachieved with 3 CL’s in a row
But I don’t anyone who would take Zidane’s Madrid over Pep’s Barca

And 2017 Madrid was the the Madrid team of the decade for me.

Truly Florentino's biggest mistake was failing to lobby Mr Clean into passing a rule that forced all of our opponents to start Karius

Lopetegui will manage the team in training tomorrow morning. There will be a meeting during the afternoon, after it Florentino Pérez will announce the firing of Lopetegui. Solari will manage Real Madrid during the week, there will be talks with Conte tomorrow.

Well that was quick, even quicker than Benitez.

I think they still have a strong core but the worry for them is that their squad is fairly old and soon will need replacing.
Modric,Ramos,Bale,Marcelo etc.

God.

You gave up managing your country in a World Cup where you had a pretty good chance of doing something. You gave all of that up to manage Madrid only to be sacked after a totally forgettable 10 games that I very much doubt most people will remember at the end of the season.

That must be very tough to take.

Yes, there was a lot of rotations that year. But still the first team players were still historically great. Full backs, centre backs, midfielders, all the forwards. All of them were great.

By the way, the league was won by 3 points, not 1.

Lopetegui must be having so much remorse right now. Feel a little bad for him, as they just screwed so bad by getting rid of Ronaldo and not replacing him. And then a few players just want to piss off and have not been trying this season. And you could make a case that Curtois has caused more problems than solutions so far.

A lot of poor decisions by Real.

Replacing Zidane who played a more direct style often counter attacking but also capable of possession football, but a completely possession oriented manager (I think?). It's a fairly big shift to make.

Replacing your star goalscorer with.. nobody. It's one thing to go big and fail but you can't replace Ronaldo from within unless you've got Brazilian Ronaldo coming up through the ranks. Such an odd decision.

And then the choice of Lopetegi himself. Was he that highly rated before? He doesn't look a very talented coach to me.

Finally, a lack of signings in general. Everyone said Madrid were in decline last year as well. How do they respond? By selling a big name and buying no one but a few kids. You're setting yourself up for short term difficulties by doing that.

@shamans Even if you go on to achieve nothing else of note in your life, you've already achieved enough with this prophecy. What a prediction. Nice one!

Going by the name we should have all resigned to this truth right after the thread was made!

They would have still got pasted with Ronaldo in that team. I recall him being on the ends of several rodgerings at the hands of Barcelona in the Classico. He may have scored a half chance but that would have been it.

Zidane leaving was the biggest blow.

Dint he wanted the club to bail him out from tax issues?

:wenger:

It's incredible how there are still people able to close their eyes on what's happening. They got pasted in Clasicos by great Barcelona teams, not by this Barcelona team without Messi.

Zidane must be the greatest football genius in history if the changes in the team are down to him not being there, looking forwad to watching him go on to win trophy after trophy for the rest of his career.

Ok, fair enough.

Question. Placing current Ronaldo in this team. What do you think the difference would be?

I don’t understand why they bought Cortois in the first place. Navas is a fine keeper.

With that said, didn’t Cortois and Conte have a falling out? Should make the remainder of their season a hoot. Wish they went for Jose instead. Perhaps they’ll wait until after our match against City.

I do not know if he wanted Madrid to pay for everything, but the fact that the club ignored his complaints, possibly increased his anger over the issue of money / pride .
Aparently he expected more public support from the club, maybe a campaign #weareallMessi.

Well, they'd just be big favourites to win the Champions League instead of having no chance at all.

They wouldn't have gone through the biggest goal drought in their history either, they'd have scored more, conceded less, won more and lost less. Their fans wouldn't be looking on the pitch searching for some fight or craving a star player to put their hopes on.

Considering Zidane's reasoning for leaving Real Madrid was that he couldn't have more success with this group of players, what would the difference be if he was in Lopetegui's place?

I'm surprised they didn't retire that No. 7 for a while. Laughable to see Mariano coming out from sub as no. 7.

The state of Real Madrid is worse than us at the moment.

I disagree with everything you just said.

Placeholder for explanation tomorrow as to why.

The fact that galactico policy is no longer sustainable, and its taking a toll on madrid. Replacing star strikers is going to cost their pockets huge cash.
