He is a great coach, there is really no argument about it. He knows how to motivate a team, he knows how to handle big egos and hurt feelings.
Literally nobody expected Benzema to score 2 in this match against the best defense in the world after the season he just had, but he repeatedly showed the trust he had in Karim and it payed off big time. I also believe Benzema played great today and made Madrid much better after he came on in the first leg.
Navas was outstanding and performed at a level I never expected him to ever reach at all. His decisions in the transfer windows looked like they would have cost him (signing no one except some talents), but Madrid is still getting there after beating Paris, Juve and Bayern.
His team was outplayed for large parts of the match and I won't hold that against him much because I believe Heynckes is the greatest coach of the last 20 years, but it was still remarkable for his team to show resilience and advance against an opponent with a superior playing style. I was reminded of Fergie's later years in the Premier League, where his teams lost every midfield battle but still smashed the big teams left, right and centre.
On a side note, I fecking hated that midfield. Kovacic had no idea what to do, Kroos was useless except for solving pressing situations and they left the space in front of the box empty on many occassions. I liked the 442 from the middle of the season because it had great offensive and defensive balance (Asensio is better on the wing than as a forward and Vazquez is a neat player to have by your side). Dunno why Zidane abandoned it, but if you play 433, atleast put Casemiro in there to give some support for the defence from midfield. I hope he plays the 442 or uses the 433 with Casemiro, Modric and Isco as a 10 because Isco is great if not played as a forward.
