Timely? Or is there another thread for this?

Jose 7
ETH 6
Ole 5.5
LVG 5
Moyes 4

It was only with Jose where I thought for maybe a season and a half that we could start doing something. I had that feeling with ETH for the majority of his first season. And not at all with the other three. The expectations were maybe highest for Moyes on the back of SAF winning the league and Jose due to his pedigree. Everyone bar Moyes saw huge club spending, but I would say money spent is on the club and not the managers, we have overspent regardless of who is manager, and we have given ludicrous wages to players for 10 years straight years (starting with Mata in January in Moyes' season). Maybe I'm too generous with Jose, the football wasn't pretty, but we won two trophies in the first season and improved in the league the following season, which looks better and better as time passes and lesser managers get crushed by the expectations at United.

There is a thread somewhere.

I'd broadly agree, swapping LVG and Ole, I think once the dust settles and people forget their personal dislike for ETH, he will be remembered more fondly.

  1. Jose
  2. ETH
  3. LVG
  4. Ole
  5. Moyes
  6. Ragnick

If anyone of them had been 7 or higher they would have been still in the job.
I honestly think ETH was the best of the bunch.

Ha. Yeah, maybe. I should revise my score. Jose a 7. I do think he did a better job than I thought at the time.

Jose 6.5/10
Ole 5/10
LVG 5/10
Moyes 3/10
ETH 3/10

All adjusted for their entire spell, the money spent/backing from the board, and the long term damage.

Moyes for example was the shittest of them all, but he barely spent anything so not as much damage as say EtH and LVG who spent a shitload of money, had backing and still miserably failed.

The only time in the last 11 years I thought we were going back to the very top (not just vaguely challenging) was the first half of Jose’s second season. I think we won all 6 of our Champions league group matches that year. If Pep had come over a year later we might of won the league that year but it faded and then it all blew up that summer.
I really thought ETH would get us back competing at the top. I never expected much of Ole or Moyes and Jose was always 3 years max, so in a way ETH has been the most disappointing of all. Though not the worst

For those rating Ten Hag as the same or worse in comparison to Moyes, let's remember Moyes took over a PL winning team. He then proceeded to turn us into a league one team, crossing the ball 81 times in one game vs Fulham, amongst some of the most boring football I've ever witnessed. At least Ten Hag will leave us with two cups, one of them beating our biggest rivals Liverpool in the semi's, and City in the final.

On their overall stint, balancing cup wins, general play throughout their entire time (not just 1 season highs):
  1. Ole
  2. Mourinho
  3. Van Gaal
  4. Ten Hag
  5. Moyes
Ten Hag and Van Gaal pretty close to each other, but despite how dull he was, Van Gaal never went into disaster mode and we replaced at the right time, which we didn't do with Ole, Mourinho or Ten Hag.

José and Ole are the only managers who made an uptick in our club ELO rating and it peaked highest under Ole.

Ole is easily the one who had us playing best football. If we'd won the shootout vs Villareal, I believe everyone would've had him first.

I can't be bothered to rate them. None of them were good enough. I'm just gonna rank them from least shit to most shit instead...

1st/2nd:
Mourinho and Ole - It all depends on my mood. After an embarrassing result my answer is Mou. After a boring game my answer is Ole.

3rd:
Van Gaal - Football boring beyond compare and results lacking, but not too embarrassing at least.

4th:
Ten Hag - Worst or almost worst at everything apart from winning domestic cups. I don't rate those that highly, but they are just about enough to put him ahead of Moyes.

5th:
Moyes - No need to elaborate.

Jose 6
Was alright for the first 2 seasons, but all went south in his 3rd with those toxic interviews during pre-season, it was only going to end on a sacking.

ETH 5.5
Won a league cup and F.A cup, but no real style of play unlike his Ajax team.

LVG 5.5
Won a F.A cup, and we had a style of play, if we had a bit more tempo to our play he would easily be on first place.

Ole 5
Counter attacking football, but too many poor runs of results and cup semi final defeats to warrant a higher score.

Moyes 0.5
Useless, took over a premier league winning team, but got rid of the coaching team to bring in his bunch of losers. It would be like a Macdonald's boss getting a top job in a Michelin star restaurant and sacking all the chefs to bring in the burger flippers from Macdonald's, and expecting the same results.

It's difficult to rank ETH, his first season was the most i'd enjoyed going to old Trafford since SAF days, but he's also responsible for probably the lowest experience since as well last season. That FA Cup win was also very special.

For me i'd go (only based on permanent managers):

1. Jose - Football was horrific, but you knew that it was going to be. Won a couple of trophies, which isn't to be scoffed at. Had his usual melt down and it all went tits up, as expected in his 3rd year.
2. ETH - Great first season, 2 FA Cup finals winning one, a league cup - Worst season on record in the premier league era was pretty damning though. But trophy wins are days to remember, so ETH gave me more happy memories than any of the others, despite how shit it went.
3. Ole - Would be top if he managed to win a trophy. lack of success means he can't be any higher.
4. LVG - Dreadful football served up, hated watching it. Spent a lot of money for next to nothing to show for it.
5. Moyes - Why did we ever hire him again? completely out of his depth

ETH being so high will irk people, but when I look back on my days following united, i'll always remember being at Wembley when we beat city, the people below him don't really have any of those moments for me.

Moyes - Madenning
Jose - Jurassic
Louis - Lackluster
Ole - Oblivious
Ralf - Wrecked it
Erik - Exasperating

I can't tell if this is a wum, it worryingly looks legit.

1. Jose
2. Ole

3. Van Gaal

4. ETH
5. Moyes
6. Ragnick

Mostly based on how I felt supporting United during those periods.

Moyes - Should have been given more of a chance 6/10
Jose - Serial winner, needed more time 7/10
Louis - Liked him a lot 8/10
Ole - Awful 2/10
Ralf - We didn't have the players to play for his style 7/10
Erik - Expensive but won us trophies 8/10

Ten Hag might have won 2 cups but he's left the club in considerably worse position than any of the other managers imo

1. Ole - Still far and away the most effective football we played in the post-Fergie era was played in the pre-Ronaldo Ole era.
2. Jose - Not pretty but we won Europa league.
3. Van Gaal.
4. Moyes, Ten Hag and Rangnick tie. All diabolical in their own unique ways.

I've purposefully wiped too much of their tenures from memory to give an objective rating. @Robbie Boy summed it up well enough!

Jose undoubtedly #1

First season was pretty great and we were really undone by the Zlatan injury at the end of that season for his 2nd but we still managed to finish 2nd. We should have kicked on that summer and backed him but the Glazers we're still in that splurge until we get in the top 4 and then pull the purse strings again. His third summer window was the least we've supported a manager.

Ole is #2 for me. Strong league campaigns, plenty of deep cup runs and a genuine joy in watching the games and club again.

Erik - #3. First season was my favourite of any United manager post SAF. Thought his Ronaldo stance, the running after Brentford loss etc was brilliant and we'd turn it round. Cracks started to show post-Carabao cup win and then arguably he's been our worst manager since then.

LVG - #4. Loved the guy. Football was boring outside of a lovely purple patch in first season. Wasn't given as much time or rope as Ole or ETH

Moyes - #5. Poisoned chalice, thoroughly like the guy with hindsight.

Yeah, it was still a complete waste of time.
I'd take a complete waste of time where I mostly enjoy my time supporting United over the complete waste of time where its miserable for months and months with a couple of enjoyable moments sprinkled in.

And? ETH was shite too. They all were. Our managerial recruitment has been an absolute disaster in the post-Fergie era.

Yeah well some of us actually like scoring goals...
'Like goals, hate trophies'

I thoroughly dislike Mou but anyone not putting him No1 given the sorry shambles we've seen post SAF needs to remind themselves of how crap we played under all of these guys.

It really is interesting seeing the more positive comments about José. And I also agree he had made the best job of it.
And I said at the time that in the end he had to go.
But that it was a missed opportunity for both he and the club.

Anyway. All in the past now and we must look forward to a successful RVN.
