Rasmus Højlund | Signed for United

Interesting thing there is that they say we're looking to make Hojlund our new first choice striker. As opposed to the suggestion some have made that he should be the more junior of two striker signings.

In my mind he's still rotating with Rashford / Martial at CF (so junior to an existing player at the club). We were never really signing 2 CFs given the number of things we needed to fix in our squad.

Not surprising but I'd be baffled if we don't sign an experienced backup, too. A Wout, but not.. Wout, because Wout sucked, but that sort of player, just, they can actually score a goal from time to time.

I think he can carry the role if an elite striker can't be bought. The chances we've had go begging, he has the instinct in the box to score and is very able in the build up play and has some clever touches and turns. My only bad feeling is he's not super agile or fast but fast enough and will have to pass the ball a bit quicker with his back to goal. Said a few weeks ago I can see him being our main striker if the budget isn't there or player unavailable.

hmm...so we spend 50m on Onana, 50m on Mount and now 50m on Hojlund. Going to assume that is our entire budget and EtH has pushed to get these three deals done right away before the players return for preseason. If he's our #1 option for the striker position that leads me to beleive Martial isn't going anywhere, Kane and Osimhen our out of reach and no one transfers will take place until we sell some players.

I wasn't sure about him but now I think he can be elite. Sky Sports says he has a 'rockstar' mentality.

Ideally that was United and ten Hag's plan but things have changed because of the budget

Hojlund's albeit very short time in the Austrian league saw him with a much much better goals to games ratio than Sesko which is why Atalanta took a chance on him. Sesko scored more goals in the Austrian league than Hojlund has scored in Serie A this year true, but I would argue Hojlund is a prospect that's more ready then Sesko currently. He also has 6 goals in 6 games for Denmark opposed to Sesko's 6 goals in 21 games.

This is aside from the fact that Sesko already signed for RB Leipzig anyway.

I'm not sure it's about the only option we have, but more about the option that ETH and the recruitment team want the most if we cannot get a hold of the likes of Kane and Osimhen
Currently I think we may have dodged a bullet on Sesko.

Not fast? Did you not see him burn two Lazio players this season after giving them ten yards headstart?

The kid has speed for days.
HHell, even in this video he's faster with the ball than a lot of other players without it.

Muani is more of an inside forward like Rashford anyway isn't he?

I'm excited about Hojlund but it's a big ask for him to lead the line for us next season. Really think we should be signing a more experienced striker as well.

I mean I wouldn't go that far, for all intents and purposes there's currently nothing to say that Sesko won't go on to have a much better career than Hojlund. But if you want to talk about rapid player development and current readyness then Hojlund is above him in both categories... I mean who even really knew of Hojlund 2 seasons ago where as Sesko was the next big thing

I'm pretty sure 90% of the Cafe hadn't heard about him until 2 weeks ago!

I include myself in that 90%

Either Rashford, martial or hojlund would start up top for us, if Rashford is top then Sancho or Garnacho play left wing. Martial isn't leaving before next summer anyway, neither is Sancho. Highly doubt we get someone else. Hojlund will develop, provide a lot anyway while he's young, but we also have martial who when actually fit is decent (which is rare, but anyway), or Rashford who obviously is a key player but plays where you'd expect Garnacho to get more and more minutes now. It's a huge step forward, but with still a big step to take to become true title challengers. First step is being a secure top 4 team, improving the system, improving performances consistently and then showing a high level in the CL. Next summer we can look at if we still need an older CF if Kane is available on a free, or if Hojlund is fine.

@redshaw Here's the sprint vs Lazio.

Yes I've seen it. Having seen a lot of his runs I wouldn't say he's on Rashford or other players level but fast enough. I would be a bit more cautious on his speed claims that I've read but would be happy to be proven wrong.

Even though I'm not sure about him one thing that's clear is he likes to play with his back to goal and that's something our strikers were awful with last season.

DDG rightly gets blame for losing possessions with hoofs but our strikers got away with some blame because even if he played a perfect ball to them it would never stick. If he can hold the ball up at his young age, he'll probably be a beast at it in a few years.

Some of the quotes I've read about him from footballers/managers are astonishing. Obviously they are going to be aware of young special talents but it really is quite exciting to go after a player where legends of the game have so much to say about him so early on in his career.

Gian Piero Gasperini:
'One day I will tell my grandchildren that I trained Rasmus Højlund. With Rasmus you have to speak to him in small doses and listen carefully to the little that he says. Don't write about him, don't try to understand how he does it, just watch him.'

Xavi Hernández:
'It's clear that Højlund is a distinct level above the rest. Those that don't know how to see it are blind.'

Arsène Wenger:
'Højlund is a footballer from a Play Station game. Things that are impossible to do, he makes them possible.'

Zlatan Ibrahimović:
'I already know which footballer will take my place and his name is Rasmus Højlund. He has something different to all other footballers. He is a leader that is an example to everyone.'

Peter Schmeichel :
'Højlund is the Mozart of football.'

Roberto Mancini:
'Every time we watch Rasmus play, we remember the days of playing football in the playground at school, a flashback in time.'

Michael Laudrup:
'I thank God every day that Højlund is Danish.'
Not gonna lie.....I almost fell for this.

Ok, so now that I watched a 7 min long compilation on YT I'm sold. It's the goal where he slide tackled the gk and scored that made it for me.

On a serious note, seems a bit raw to be our first choice striker. Also doesn't seem to be great at heading the ball which would be welcome for once. Surely tons of potential, though.

Also, isn't it the destiny? Haaland vs Hojlund etc and so on.

No doubt raw, but he's clearly the best option out there of "non-elite" strikers given his profile and potential as well as probable price. I think he'll have a frustrating but good season here where he'll probably not be as lethal as we want but still create loads of danger. Think Nunez for Liverpool (when he played through the middle). Although I think RH is better technically than Nunez

I mean yeah Martial is the only good back to striker we had and he's crocked or not even in the squad most of the year last year. Ronaldo and Weghorst were both embarrassingly bad in their own way, and Rashford obviously prefers to play off the shoulder as a runner than dropping and holding up the ball (although I do think he got better last year compared to years past)

He looks like an above-average striker but nothing special. Seems like a gamble on potential/fit

If you look like an above average striker at 20 years old then you are doing something right. And unless a player is 30 years old, you always gamble on potential while you always gamble on fit regardless of the age or level of a player.

Atalanta wants MG on loan. This could soften the deal.

I don't see the point of shipping him out on loan vs. having him train and provide depth with the current squad unless we are purely looking to drive up his value before a potential sale (but if that's the case and he actually goes and tears up Italy than whats the point of selling )

This is funny. I mean, what does a special striker look like at the age of 20? You want him to play like Ronaldo, and if he doesn't then he's not special?

As @JPRouve already pointed out: if you look above average as a 20 year old striker, you're doing great.

You realize Wout fecking Weghorst was a fan favorite right? It's not hard, just run a bunch especially if you're a striker. Hojlund could easily become one.
Weghorst is not a fan favourite. People liked him initially but he didn't score enough goals so people didn't like him in the end. Similar to this Hojlund guy. Gonna start out well then flame out.

He's not ready.
