What???
Over 22/23 season Hojlund has scored 16 goals in club competitions, Martial scored 9.

Hojlund has also scored 6 more goals in 6 official games for Denmark national team last season.

Let's compare what they did in top 5 leagues.

Martial scored a goal every 160 minutes of football he played last season.

1441 ÷ 9

Hojlund scored a goal every 187 minutes he played last season.

2061 ÷ 11

As such saying the reason Martial won't start is due to goals per minute is silly. Which is literally the only point I'm making. Not that Martial will start because he won't.

Martial and Hojlund both haven’t played in pre-season so both have to be eased in.

We may see Sancho as false nine for a few games.

Why wouldn’t we just play Rashford up front and Sancho / Garnacho on the LW?

Indeed, why wouldn’t we play our best attacker out of position, simultaneously benching our new talented striker.

The original post was saying he'd be eased in, presume he meant Rashford up front while Hoijlund gets up to speed

Planning does seem rubbish.

We had Wrexham and Madrid the next day.

Now Lens and Athletic the next day.

Meaning we had mixed squads and a mix match of players.

Why weren’t the games spaced out to let the first team get more minutes?

I am guessing they will have a behind closed doors friendly next week.
Wrexham was always going to be the kids, but yes the two this weekend does seem a bit strange.

Then again, I guess we would want our second string to have plenty of minutes so they are ready for the start of the season as well. If we just gave our starting 11 an increasing amount of minutes as preseason wore on it would actually have the opposite effect on the second string, with their minutes getting reduced in each match. Having two matches in two days means pretty much every player in the squad can get a full match before the season starts.

Lisandro, Eriksen, Wout and Antony were in first 11 after few trainings. Only Case started slowly.
Hojlund will lead the line from day one.

This place is obsessed with the idea new signings being on the bench for the first 3 months.

He might not start the opening game of the season, but the idea it'll take months for him to is a nonsense. I wouldn't even be shocked if he starts against Wolves.

So many on here overblow and over complicate every facet of football.

As a Danish nat. team fan, it is extremely exciting to see this transfer happen - it breaks the previous transfer record for a Danish players by a wide margin, and it is rare that we see a Danish attacker in a top club.

Of course, it is also with some trepidation, considering his youth and his lack of experience at the top level - I do hope he is eased in, although, of course, one can't help but want to see him have a go as soon as possible :)

One thing that gives a reason to believe he will not be too intimidated by his new home is the way he slotted into the Danish nat. team. He seemed totally non-plussed, and performed from the get-go. Hopefully that says something about his mental fortitude.

Yeah and I think there is a significant difference in that holding midfield position.

There are more disasterous reprucussions if your holding midfielder isn't fully acclimated to the tactics. With a striker it's not quite as risky.

I reckon Hojlund starts the first game of the season.

why is everybody expecting 15 goals from him? that is more than half of all the goals he scored in professional football ever, and we expect him to score it in his maiden season in the PL?

Most posts before your comment that I saw weren’t saying he will. They were saying “if this……he could” or “if he does it’ll be a success”.

And if he does end up leading the line for the majority of the season and is the talent Ten Hag thinks he is, then he could score that many. Being the main man for a team like Utd should give him more chances than coming off the bench for Atalanta. Seems to be more speculative than expectation though.

With Hojlund I only think its different because of our striker situation, it's god awful. Without him we're stuck with last seasons offerings of wet paper Martial and Rashford who I don't believe is a good CF, he's better on the left. That's why we should be as eager as possible to get him in and playing asap

It's 2023 and VISA is still a problem for international athletes... it's so stupid.

Yes especially as they will be paying taxes to this country off their earnings. Its not like they are sucking off the state. Ridiculous rule.

That and my personal favourite.

"Can't play the youth player in this game. Too much pressure. It could ruin him. No, no, he can only play in games which we're confortably winning 3-0. If we bring him on at 2-0, and the opposition score, it could ruin him."

If you only play young players in games either already won or stripped of significance then you're either going to give him far too few minutes (See Amad) or you're denying him the level of competition and stakes to allow pressure to make him.

But no. The armchair psychologists have already determined that young players must be safeguarded from more than five minutes per week. Meanwhile, Barca, Bayern and Real are more than comfortable dropping talented kids in competitive pressure games.

This place would collectively shit itself if Sir Alex did now start he did back in the mid 90s with Giggs or the class of 92.

He will be having the most intensive "behind the scene fan experience EVER" ;)

The sort of tour money can't buy...training and eating with the first team. Lucky guy to win such a prize...totally NOT working.

True - and there's something to say for not making too big a deal of it, and not allowing potential anxiety to build up on the sidelines.

As long as ten Hag explains that Højlund should just enjoy it and give it a go - or whatever Hag's version of not putting on the pressure from the start sounds like.

You nutbars. He’s not going to be sitting on the bench for too long. We’ve spent a lot of money getting him in because he has qualities that we don’t currently have.

Nope, we've spent a lot of money because he has a lot of potential.
If the main goal was to transform our attack in game 1 of the season, we would've bought a more established player 4 weeks ago.

Reading all the comments here how he's so far superior to Rashford and Martial already even without a game with the group, I can only imagine the meltdown that is bound to happen....
A 34 yo Arnautovic was a more effective striker last year in the same league, would you throw him in our squad right now, expecting to be the new target man we badly need?

Hojlund has tons of potential and I really do prefer those kind of signings to the established superstar coming for their paycheck, but he's not gonna take the league by storm like Haaland. And as badly as we wish, he's not an upgrad RIGHT NOW to our striker options.
Some of you guys really need to lower the expectations.

I’m not setting any expectations for him other than I think he will play. ETH will want him to integrate as soon as possible.

What I like about this signing is the fact that he'll genuinely threaten the opponent box. When we set up last season like. Rashford-Weghorst-Antony or Sancho-Rashford-Antony. It was just Rashford who carry any genuine threat to the opponent. Antony only shoots low probability shots and Sancho and Weghorst don't look to hurt the opponent at all while Garnacho tries but he's only used as a sub.
This guy will be running in behind, occupy center backs, he'll be there for the cut backs. Opponent center backs will actually have work to do preventing him from scoring and all this will be good for the rest of the team around him.
