Why hasn’t the club announced the deal yet?
Quite obviously because all the formalities/contract aren't completed... just because Fabrizio says here we go it doesn't mean it's ready to be announced. He hasn't even had his medical.

The team are flying back from the US. I guess the PR team are probably going to time an announcement and photos with their return to Carrington.

There can’t be any announcement before medicals are completed. And for them to be completed, Hojlund must fly to Manchester first

For his first season i will already find it acceptable if he does better than Martial and Weghorst combined.

Fit and available for most games. Make runs, press and work for the team and score somewhere between 10-15 goals all season.

Weghorst:
Fit? Yes
Make runs, press and work for the team? Yes
... and score somewhere between 10-15 goals all season? Yeah right

Martial:
Fit? He's the new Phil Jones but without the face
Make runs, press and work for the team? I bet I could run more... and I'm a semi fat 40+ smoker
... and score somewhere between 10-15 goals all season? He did score more than Weghorst, but that aint saying much

So I'd raise the bar a bit :D

Per 90 comparisons with Gabriel Jesus look promising, albeit very different leagues.

Both scored around 0.5 goals per 90 minutes last season. Hojlund has a slightly better conversion rate (20.45% : 19.3%) and shot accuracy (63.64% : 56.14%). Jesus has more assists (0.3 : 0.1) and chances created (1.4 : 1.2)

If Hojlund has a similar season for us, playing with better players, there’s no reason to think he can’t hit double figures.
I'd hope he gets more goals than Jesus tbh. Jesus is a great all-round player but his finishing is pretty crap

The more I see 65m the less expensive it looks and I wonder why people are crying so much? The cost of players this summer is woefully obscene.
People wanted Kane and are being negative on the kid. I have to admit I wanted Rasmus. His potential looks frightening.

It must be absolutely awful to sit at home waiting for a transfer like that to go through....doubt they get much sleep :)

He'd might as well jump on a plane right now if he's not going to train. Sounds like the paperwork is a formality.

He is probably saying his farewells and packing up his stuff. Season starts soon so may as well use this 48 hour window before ETH and the boys are back at Carrington to get his affairs in order. He can then be 100% focused on integrating into the team and playing this weekend and putting himself in the frame for a few minutes against Wolves.

Well we had Onana go hungry for a week and Amrabat currently sitting in an empty house with his bags packed. Could be worse.

This lad needs to have a very thick skin. The knuckle-dragging media are convinced that he has to be at least the equal of Haaland, otherwise he's a complete failure. So many articles and social media posts comparing their stats because they have a similar surname.

Didn't see any posts comparing Nkunku or anyone else to Haaland when they were signed of course.

He is a young striker with potential. He will be a good addition for Utd. Price for forward in today's market is very expensive and that's not his fault.

I see quite a few posts saying we shouldn’t expect too much, fair enough. Also quite a few not expecting him to start that many games, which surprised me.

He looks good and we don’t have many options. My prediction is:

PL: 25 starts, plus 7 sub appearances, 13 goals
Cups / Europe: 7 starts, plus 3 sub apps, 5 goals

Total fecking guesswork but 18 goals seems a decent return without asking too much.
13 goals would have him in the top 10-12 PL goalscorers in the last few seasons. Seems very ambitious.

I'd be happy enough if the lad could provide us some decent pressing, hold up and linking job. And score a couple of goals. He's still very young and raw and it's be his first year in a new, much more difficult league.

The hype and expectation is understandable but too much won't do anyone any good imo.

I think it’s fair to have some reasonable expectation for him to bang in goals at a decent clip especially if we assume our supply line of Bruno, Mount, Rashford, Antony will create ample chances for him.

He has to want to raise his game and succeed here.

That is what playing in the first XI for this club is like. You will always be compared to the best player in your position in the league. That is just inevitable. I would assume management must have thought about this when they decided to make a 20 year old the main man up front.

Yeah I understand that, thought that went without saying. What I mean is there was no rush to finalize everything and announce it whilst the squad were in the US as he wouldn’t be joining there anyway. Makes more sense for everything to be done at Carrington once he can actually join the squad.

We knew from Ten Hag’s refusal to discuss it at the Dortmund interview that the deal hadn’t been sealed yet.

I love this interview, made for United IMO can't wait to see him link up with Bruno and Rashford

Exactly and that’s what we need to get back to. We should want to be the premier destination for talent acquisition and development in that age group. We are in transition anyway so I’m glad to see the focus shift back to younger players hitting their peak with us and not on the other side of it. It’s the only thing that makes logical sense. I like Casemiro and Varane but I’d like to see stiff competition for them in the squad asap.
Very good post

Yeah, I don’t know what that says about him or the other strikers in the prem really. In our team, he can finish above the likes of Harvey Barnes imo.

I’ll settle for a good solid season with plenty of starts, plenty of opportunities and a few goals. Anything could happen…

Who told you deals can't be announced before medicals? That's not a thing...

Ha ha. It’s quite unusual to announce a deal before it’s definitely done. And it’s quite unusual for it to be definitely done before the medical. But I do remember a deal or two, can’t remember which, where we announced an agreement “subject to medical” presumably someone realised that was asking for trouble.

Do you not think it'd be better for him to play at Old Trafford instead? I thought the Lens game would be the first team. Or am I getting that mixed up?

Its only because I'll be at the game in Dublin. No idea what the teams will be for these 2 games, doubt anyone will play much more than an hour in both.

Ah, right, fair enough.

I think the Athletic Bilbao game could be the kids like against Wrexham, for what it's worth.

I'm delighted that we appear to be signing Hojlund. He was the striker I was hoping we'd get given we weren't going to be spending £100m+ on any one player this summer (and in some ways, even if we were as I believe he's a really big talent).

I don't watch every league or every team, but I always watch and follow Serie A, and Atalanta under Gasperini are a really exciting side. So I've seen a fair amount of Hojlund (and highlights of his incredible early appearances for Denmark too) and he's very impressive. Speed, strength, desire, hard working, direct with his dribbling and he seems to have a fearless and really good attitude about him. On top of all that, he's a good finisher (I think this will keep improving too) and has shown some great movement in the box - the kind of stuff we've desperately missed in recent years.

For the people who have severe doubts, question the fee and also fear he doesn't have the ability, you're very much entitled to your opinion, but I think reserving judgment would be best (especially if you've never actually watched him play properly). I think trusting in Ten Hag, who by all accounts rates Hojlund very highly and seems to have been his first choice, is also important.

As well as that, Hojlund isn't seen as some half-decent striking prospect in Europe. Juventus, AC Milan and PSG were all seriously interested with PSG potentially even bidding for him according to reports. For those who care about this stuff, I recall James Horncastle (Italian football journalist) voted Hojlund as his "Young Player of the Year" in Serie A last season in his end of season round up. It's great to see us getting off of the veteran striker carousel and investing in a genuinely exciting, up and coming striker who can become a top player at United.
