We need to keep this practical. Maybe we could change the shirt number to transfer fee and wages. Perhaps one step further it should be the yearly amortised number to avoid the numbers being too high as they will be difficult to read.
They could have a “plus” on the front of their shirt if they’re “worth it” and a “minus” if they’re not.

Nunez hit 34 goals before Liverpool paid that fee, its the reason the fee was high.
Even then he wasn't proven, but you can see why they too that risk.
There is zero evidence which points to the overpayment we have made.
If it works out then it cool (in the sense that the gamble paid off) however in future other clubs will know they can take us to the cleaners, but if it doesn't where does that leave us e.g see Maguire
That doesn’t negate the point that the value of the transfer will be determined by his performance.

The thing that baffles me is some wanting the least sexy names over this lad! People genuinely asking why we can't just sign Iheanacho instead  :wenger:
I remember seeing that, not sure if I replied but it boggles my mind for a few hours too for some reason. Few others had mentioned Mitrovic as well.

He is a brilliant back up striker. That's how he should be.treated and it would be unfair and setting him up to fail if he is seen as a main striker. I fully expect Martial if fit and Rashford to play majority of the games as striker. Or we get another striker late in the window.

People think the fee indicates he must start but main strikers are 100 mill plus. Back up strikers around 60 by the look of it.

Go name all the 60m back up strikers across Europe...

Don't get me started on people wanting to spend 50m on Mitrovic, rotten brains.
Think ETH wants the right sort of character. Mitrovic at OT last season wouldn't have helped. Also he was great last season, nobody knows if that was an fluke, he can be very inconsistant in the PL.

He scored 26 and he was their penalty taker. He also played in a weaker league than Serie A and cost up to €100m which is more than Højlund cost.
Not saying Nunez didn't look impressive, but I think your idea of "9 goals" is a bit ridiculous.

He scored 16 in 38 games in all competitions, and a lot of the games, he was either subbed in or subbed out.
However, it's not the goals you should be looking at, but his abilities and a combination of these to understand why he can be a great striker in no time.

We paid the exact same up front cost for Hojlund as Liverpool did for nunez the only difference being the add on part.

Last season hojlund was 38 apps 16 goals in all competitions
Last season at benfica Nunez was 38 apps 32 goals in all competitions.

I’m not saying hojlund won’t be successful and I know he will improve other parts of our game and I’m sure Erik will get him playing to his abilities but I just don’t see him hitting the type of numbers we’ve needed from a proper number 9. We’re just lucky Rashford stepped up last season And I think we will be relying on him again to get the bulk of our goals.

Also Toney will be up and running again. There will be options.
I actually think now would be the best time to go for Toney before he starts playing again if we had spare funds. We already know how good he is and have another option to play before Toney gets back. But I think it would be a no Brainer to sign Toney.

Press reporting Kane wants £600,000 a week, that is another reason we cannot sign him, apart from Levy won't sell to us unless it was well over £100m and I mean well over.
Yeah I'm not sure if it's an intentional ploy to rile fans in order for more clicks, or whether he really is just that dumb. We should expect better from someone who obviously has close ties to the club.

Would work for 19 teams.

One others would just have question marks on their backs

Not to say he was or is clearly the best option available but aside from Kane and Osimhen, I think it's fair to say that any other striker, Højlund included would be a bit risky. It's a tricky market for a striker and I know I'd prefer getting a young striker with potential over a striker like Watkins, who is good but probably won't ever be a top striker.

Can't say I'm super excited but really interested to see how he does. I had similar feelings with Martinez as I hadn't watched him before and had a few reservations, but was quickly won over.

Hoping he can make an early impression to take some of that pressure off.

We aren't spending £72M on a backup striker, especially when the only other alternative is Martial. Rashford is not a good striker, and we also need him on the LW. Garnacho isn't ready to be a starter there.

Rasmus Hojlund is coming here to lead the line, probably after a settling in period. He needs to play, not sit on the bench and be an "understudy".

And whether we like it or not, Mason Greenwood will eventually come back.

The footballing department aint dumb. He was a 100+million player before -- why should be just dump him?

We need a rotation of strikers -- more so for Hojlund since he needs a season or so to bed in. We'll have Balsa Tony, False 9 Sancho, Ramus and the accidental 9 Rashford. That should be enough for the season coming up.

We will now need to strengthen the squad now -- starting with Armabat and a young backup CB assuming Slabby leaves.

To the people saying Onana will be feeding him long balls all match, that's the part I'm worried about. Hojlund's aerial ability is not good, that's something he needs to work on.
Most of the long passes from Onana I have seen are into space.

Well we haven't spent £72m for a start!

Is it? That’s really not a whopping fee in today’s game.

I saw it reported somewhere yesterday that it's 60m guaranteed with 4m fairly achievable add ons. I think that's where the English press has gotten the 64m figure from.

The further 8m is meant to be harder to achieve, probably based on winning trophies. I can't remember who put that out there now though so not sure how accurate it is.

Some of the amateur fecking accountants in here, feck me. Some people just have to have a moan about anything and everything. You don’t see Madrid fans whining why they spent x on a player they really wanted. They just celebrate getting them. Which is what we should be doing here. Why the obsession over the fee? The same should be expected of him whether we paid 55m or 75m.

The bottom line is that he was the managers top choice for a CF, and we’ve gotten the deal done at a price we could afford, and early in the window. In a position we DESPERATELY needed to strengthen. I don’t understand what’s not to like here.

Madrid dropped 80m on a bench player for the future last summer, as they forward plan, and their fans took it with typical big dick energy. Meanwhile we’ve got a gaggle of mewling quims, who get a better chubby from winning the bookkeeping DoF olympics, than actually building a good squad. The same harem of snivlepots who are still whining about how much Antony cost, or think jokes about “preparing a bid, or monitoring developments” are still funny.

This place is honestly such a depressing buzzkill most of the time. Shoot me for coming in excited we’ve signed a top talent, for a position we were desperately lacking in. I should’ve known I’d be walking into a nerdy, uninformed, nihilistic circle jerk.

I really don't know why players would want to join our team with the sort of support they get from some fans who write them off before they even kick a ball, just because they aren't the sexy name they want.
Yeah, because they’re doing United a favour, not like they’re being paid or anything. Boot licking nonsense :wenger:

I think he will initially struggle in the prem given the pace and physicality of the league.

Patience is key, so long as he contributes in link up and takes a defender with him (whereas teams just left Wout unmarked) our system will work better as the opposition can't do easily double team our bigger threats like Rashford etc.

Absolutely spot on, the same people moaning like feck will be the same people that’ll tug themselves into a frenzy if he proves to be a success.

Yes, but Lukaku/L.Martinez still won Inter a lot of headers from Onana's long balls, as they are an easy outlet, and Hojlund will not always have space to run into.

From what I saw, Hojlund was exposed to more frequent instances of physicality in Serie A, of which in the PL would result in free-kicks, whereas in Serie A, he was given nothing and he handled it very well. There's an argument that insofar as physical contact is concerned, Serie A referees permit greater physical contact without penalisation. In this case, PL duels will seem easier rather than more difficult with the added protection of referee involvement.

The speed is obviously the more marked difference between the two leagues, however, he is both a very fast player and a very high work rate player. His pressing stats are higher than Darwin Nunez, for example, who himself is incredibly hard working. If there's one player who I'm not concerned about transitioning to the PL, it's Hojlund.

That's a relief because, I don't know about you, but my eyes immediately watered when I read "£72m". It's such an eye-watering sum, like I'm peeling onions or something. Very strange.

My eyes watered so much I was able to fill a kettle and make a nice cup of tea.

According to Romano, its 60M fixed with 12M addons. It's not as bad as I thought, I think its a okay compromise for United.

I always said we should go for a younger striker over Kane, so I can't really complain. Riskier than expected but if it works out then we could be sorted at 9 for a long time.

Do others think he'll be a starter early in the season? I'd be surprised myself.

I couldn't care less about the fee, I just want to see exciting players playing for my team and this kid is that.

Fans have become so obsessed with finances in football. We are supposed to be supporting our team not scrutinising the structure of financial transactions like a load of bank managers.

Just enjoy the fact we are signing one of the most exciting young forwards in Europe instead of worrying that some halfwit on talksport will laugh at United overpaying by 10 million.
